Fans React to ‘The Color Purple’ Nominees Being Shut Out at 2024 Golden Globes

Published: Sunday 7th Jan 2024 by Rashad

The road to OSCAR glory was expected to be a bit brighter for Fantasia and Danielle Brooks as the only two nominees at the 2024 Golden Globes on hand for their respective performances in the 2023 ‘Color Purple’ musical.

Yet, the night ended with both singer-actresses going home emptyhanded.

As we reported, the 81st Golden Globe Awards aired live on January 7 and saw Fannie compete against Jennifer Lawrence, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Natalie Portamn, and Alma Poysti for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The GRAMMY winner lost to Stone in the category – a win that would’ve not only marked a career first for Fantasia but also a first for the award show overall as she would’ve been the first Black singer to own this category since its inception.

Angela Bassett made history in 1994 when she became the first Black woman to win the Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for her portrayal of Queen of Rock Tina Turner in the critically acclaimed 1993 film ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’

At writing, she remains the only Black performer to have ever won in this category.

For Brooks, her portrayal of ‘Sofia’ in ‘Purple’ was on pace to make her only the 9th Black woman to win the Best Supporting Film Actress (Musical) Golden Globe behind previous winners Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Mo’Nique, Octavia Spencer, Ariana DeBose, Regina King, and Angela Bassett.

Battling Emily Blunt, Da’Vine Joy Rudolph, Jodie Foster, Julianne Moore, and Rosamund Pike for the honor, Rudolph not only emerged the victor at the award show’s 2024 ceremony but was presented the statuette by previous winner Bassett (alongside Jared Leto).

Look below to see how ‘Color Purple’ fans responded to the upsets.

To add, the movie itself was not nominated for Best Picture (Musical).

YALL AINT GOT NO LOVE FOR COLOR PURPLE BC THE MOVIE UNDERPERFORMED. FAKE LOVE AND OUTRAGE. FINGERS ALSO NEED TO BE POINTED AT TARAJI P HENSON’S CONSTANT COMPLAINTS ABOUT CONDITIONS ON SET AND HER PAY. THAT ALONE DESTROYED THE PRESS RUN…..

A Remake does not qualify! Start with an original story…

    • Omaha January 7, 2024

It doesn’t qualify but it was nominated….you sound silly. Moreover, it isn’t a remake. It’s an adaptation of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical which was more aligned with the book than film. Know what you speak honey.

Turning out to be a low key flop after that first day . Black people don’t do musicals like that and taraji said it best. Why would u ever redo the film

    • Omaha January 7, 2024

How did they redo the original film when the original wasn’t a musical? 🤔

  4. Jizz January 7, 2024

Wah wah wah! U can’t win everything and Fantasia is NO JHud. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Fantasia and J Hud are pretty neck and neck in my opinion. J Hud won in the supporting actress category, which is a lot easier to achieve than best actress, especially for a black actress. The leads almost always go to w white actress with only a handful of exceptions.

I think Fantasia captured her character’s ups and downs and deeper emotions better than Margot did in Barbie. When they make it a point in Hollywood to hire black writers to write for black characters, it means other people don’t always understand the different black experiences. So now look at the fact that only 11% of the voting body for the Golden Globes is black and 40% is white – there’s the simple answer as to why more people favored the white all-American image that Margot portrayed. It takes no effort for them to understand Margot/Barbie, but they really have to make an effort to understand Fantasia/Celie and what motivates the different choices she makes.

The original Color Purple movie was SNUBBED in 1984 and here we are 40 years later……..

Can we please move on from this flop ass movie???

Golden Globes is a judgement program setup to award a actor for what they believe done a fabulous job at whatever it was they were to portray to be. Man can never do God’s work to judge because every man is biased in some way. Look at the history of the Golden Globes. Give the glory to God, not the Golden Globes! There you will judged for whom you are, not for what someone else thinks you should be. YOU ALL ARE WINNERS!

I loved the musical film and felt it was life-altering (and affirming). Let’s look at it logically. The 1985 film by Spielberg was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won zero. The 2006 Broadway musical version was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and won zero. (It did win best revival in 2015.) Chances are this trend will continue. While we all love it in one form or another, those in the industry that get to vote have never been so taken by the subject matter or performances associated with it. Sadly.
The author of the original novel, Alice Walker, DID win a Pulitzer Prize in 1982–the first Black woman to do so.

This is 2024 and yet we as Blacks in America are still screaming for equality and fairness in the Whites’s Awards world! Fantasia and Danielle deserved the Golden Globe Awards that I refuse to watch and give energy to!! I know BET and NAACP Image will recognize their greatness and pray it means more to them than Golden Globe that they will not show equality with Blacks and we should accept and dismiss the Golden Globe!!

Comments like these minimize the several black actors who DID win last night. If you really wanna keep it real- Taraji’s disparaging comments during the press tour has gotten the film shut out of awards season. Her castmates should thank her for that. But let’s celebrate the Black creatives who DID win Golden Globes and Emmys! Thank you!

Did any of the people upset about the awards see ALL the nominees in their respective films? Have they witnessed each performance? And if so, do they understand the nuances of a performance well enough to judge what’s “best”? Doubtful. I’d imagine they’re just ignorance fools. Just because the actor/actress you like didn’t win doesn’t mean that the winner didn’t deserve it.

Why wasn’t Fantasia a winner of at least one Category last night?
For none of the actors to win was so obvious to all in attendance and at home.
I’m glad My family and I saw her perform on Broadway she’s a classy lady with numerous talents along with the rest of the cast!

If I’m Oprah, I’m TIGHT as hell that Taraji hi jacked the Color Purple presss run with all these gripes. It couldn’t wait until after the promo? She effectively gave the media a bone to go after and a narrative to paint. I hate that such a beautiful film has such bad press.
