Angela Bassett Reflects on Oscars 2023 Loss: “It Was a Supreme Disappointment” But “I Handled It Well”

Published: Monday 4th Mar 2024 by Sam

Angela Bassett is opening up about the shocking snub that saw her passed over for an Oscar...yet again.

Hotly tipped for glory at the 2023 ceremony, where she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ the revered performer was bested by Jamie Lee Curtis.

Social media erupted in displeasure, in part due to the overwhelming belief that Bassett’s performance was deserving of the award and the fact that her sole nomination before that point was 30 years ago.

In a new OWN Spotlight special reflecting on her career, the 65-year-old – who has since been bestowed with an honorary Oscar – explained her reaction and thoughts at the time.

Full story below…

Speaking with host Oprah Winfrey, Bassett shared:

“I thought I handled it well. And that was my intention, to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment. And disappointment is human. I was disappointed and I handled it like a human being. I was [gracious] for myself and my children who were there with me.”

And gracious she was!

They know they did her wrong she should have been an Oscar winner many times over.

Angela Bassett is a Phenomenal Actress! She has shown it many times! Yes, she should have won that award! It’s criminal what they did!

Exactly why I won’t be watching this year. Tired of black actresses like Cicely, Angela, Viola, Whoopi, etc. being unawarded for lead roles that were deserving. With no black females even being nominated in the leading category this year, I’ll pass.
