Keke Palmer Responds to 'Southern Fried Rice' Trailer Backlash

After the trailer for ‘Southern Fried Rice’ dropped this week, the freshman series received a lot of backlash for the show’s premise. Now, Keke Palmer, whose network houses the title, decided to respond to the controversial feedback.

Full story below…

In a post on Instagram, Palmer briefly addressed the concerns people had about the show.

During this video, she centers her remarks on the show’s creator, Nakia Stephens, and her dedication as a creative. She also unpacked how KeyTV is investing in her, and the network is focusing on having and supporting Black creatives.

She says:

“Look what you like is subjective, but the support of Black creatives is not. And it’s a task KeyTV takes on with pride because if you want to be a creative, you have to be able to create. And that takes money and it’s KeyTV’s mission to find the funds for you to be in practice. For you to experience trial and error and to take your projects off the page and get more than one chance to do it in action. So, whether you like it all or some or none, I say give these creatives a chance to grow as we continue to grow in supporting them.”

‘Southern Fried Rice’ is a web series that centers on Koko Johnson, a Korean American girl raised by Southern Black parents. She enrolls in Wright University, a prestigious and fictional HBCU in Atlanta, and is instantly immersed in a culture that both embraces and tests her. Koko navigates everything a college kid goes through as far as belonging, love, friendship, and identity. It also explores how she is made to see how others see her, and most importantly, how she sees herself.

The series stars  ‘Love Island’ star Kordell Beckham, Choyce Brown, Ashley India, Jada Lewis, Page Yang, and Shaun Rose.

The criticism and backlash received for this series are due to their belief that this show is tone deaf and not uplifting Black culture.

Nothing wrong? Y’all Black people got some serious issues. Fried Rice is Asian cuisine and it is part of Asian culture. There is nothing to do with Black culture. Even you people love to eat Fried rice and it doesn’t mean y’all can taking away from us. Imagine there is a cooking show named “White peope Cooking Soul Food”. Bet y’all gonna say some shits! Pathetic & hypocrite!

Oh stop it troll. It’s just like Asians rapping and doing Kpop which they got from blk ppl. It’s a show about an Asian girl that grew up around blk ppl n raised by blk ppl. Nothing disrespectful was shown in the preview.

So using other race’s culture is called Black creative now? I thought it is called culture vulture. Mess!

We need to put each other on, not Asians. Let them write shows about themselves. We need to write shows about ourselves, not about them. Black folk always trying to invite everybody to the cookout. Did they invite you to the hibachi? No, and they never will. What I look like writing a show about an Asian character? I’m not feeling it, Keke.

What a short memory these students of HBCUs have. Wasn’t it Asians that were actively involved in stopping affirmative action especially for admissions in college for black people. This is insulting I don’t understand why so many past or present HBCU students would be alright with this.
