The King of Pop’s hotly anticipated biopic ‘Michael’ has made box office history with a staggering $217.4 million global opening weekend, officially becoming the biggest debut ever for a music biopic.
Of that total, the film pulled in a huge $97 million domestically, while international audiences added an even bigger $120.4 million.
That makes the Jaafar Jackson-led movie not only the biggest biopic opening of all time, but also the biggest debut for a live-action movie in 2026 so far.
Audience demand has been impossible to ignore, with reports estimating 6.3 million moviegoers in the U.S. and Canada alone during opening weekend.
Premium formats also played a major role in the film’s success. IMAX screenings generated $24.4 million globally, setting another record for a musical biopic.
Fans have been showing out in force too, with viral clips circulating online of moviegoers dancing and singing in theaters as younger audiences discover Jackson’s iconic catalog on the big screen.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and backed by a major global marketing campaign, ‘Michael’ appears poised to keep moonwalking past expectations in the weeks ahead.

I looooved it. I’ve seen in twice! Once regular and once in 4DX and it was awesome!!!! I’m going again at least 2 more times for sure. Using my AMC Plus account where I can see 4 movies every week. Definitely will have two more Michael’s on there. Lol It wasn’t perfect but it gave me what I needed!’nn
