After years of stealing scenes as the wisecracking Donkey, the comedy legend will lead his own DreamWorks Animation spinoff, ‘Donkey’, which has now secured a summer 2028 theatrical release.

Per Deadline, Universal Pictures has set the animated origin story for release on June 30, 2028.

The movie will explore how Donkey became the beloved, waffle-loving character audiences first met in the original ‘Shrek’ film.

Charlie Bean has beeb tapped to direct the feature, with Matt Flynn co-directing and Rebecca Huntley producing.

Murphy previously teased that Donkey’s solo adventure would include his dragon wife and their half-dragon, half-donkey children, saying the team had cooked up a “funny story.”

The announcement comes as the franchise gears up for ‘Shrek 5’, which is due in theaters one year earlier on June 30, 2027.
