Full story below…

A jury found Gila Regional Medical Center in New Mexico and one of its physicians liable in connection with Nichols’ 2022 death.

The jury ultimately awarded her family $13 million in damages.

TMZ reports that the hospital was found 40% responsible, while one doctor was deemed 60% liable. Another physician was found not liable.

Nichols, who made television history as Lieutenant Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ was 89 when she died.

The lawsuit alleged that the actress, who had a known heart condition, did not receive appropriate treatment after visiting an emergency room. According to local reports cited by TMZ, she was later transferred to an assisted living facility, where she died just hours afterward.

Beyond her groundbreaking role in the original ‘Star Trek’ series and films, Nichols became a cultural trailblazer whose influence stretched far beyond Hollywood. Her portrayal of Uhura helped pave the way for greater representation on television and inspired generations of viewers.

As of writing, the medical center has not publicly commented on the verdict.

This. I just found a black doctor last month and switched from my white doctor who I felt never really took my concerns seriously. On the first visit with my black doctor I felt the difference. I felt heard and cared about. All black people should switch. Black doctors are better.
