Amanda Seales is setting the record straight on comparisons between herself and former ‘Insecure’ co-star Issa Rae.
And while the outspoken entertainer had complimentary words for the actress-producer, she also made quite the declaration about her own standing in the industry: she’s an “icon.”

Addressing a comment about her career, Seales said:
“Someone said I’m jealous of Issa Rae because she has the Hollywood career, Hollywood friends and the marriage.”
Rather than taking aim at Rae, the 45-year-old praised her former co-star’s ability to bring her creative vision to the screen before insisting the comparisons overlook her own decades-long résumé.
Seales proceeded to pull out receipts, including a SAG card dating back to 1994, while referencing her work on ‘Def Poetry Jam,’ collaborations with Q-Tip, opening for comedy titans such as Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, her HBO special, and five seasons of ‘Insecure.’
Then came the emphatic proclamation:
“I’m an icon!”
She also pushed back against suggestions that her present-day output signals career struggles.
“I have time because I’m retired. I divested from Hollywood.”

The latter is an important distinction. Seales’ official site says she “divested from the entertainment business” in 2024 to work independently, rather than retiring from creating altogether.
Of course, the Issa mention is notable given their well-documented estrangement.
In 2024, Seales alleged that she felt unsupported by Rae and ostracized by the wider ‘Insecure’ cast. She said communication between the pair effectively stopped during season 5, although Seales remained on the show through its conclusion.
A year later, she claimed their final day filming almost escalated into a physical confrontation and said she had not spoken to Rae since.
The renewed chatter also arrives after Seales was noticeably absent from the recently announced ‘Insecure: The 10th Anniversary Tour,’ which reunites Rae with several core cast members.
So, while this latest vent skews less fiery in flavor than some of Seales’ past remarks about her former boss, the “icon” declaration ensures it is unlikely to go unnoticed.
I wouldn’t say icon, but she could be. She’s one of those ones who doesn’t know how to not be angry. And she is very intelligent, brilliant even, so I get why she is angry because that’s a sign that one “gets it” but at the same time she limits herself with the way she presents it. Everything is not a fight, and she is always is combat mode.
