Katy Perry clawed her way into music history earlier this month when she became only the fourth woman to have at least one Diamond song and album, following the likes of her former nemesis Taylor Swift as well as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

And while the certification upgrades at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) also saw her penciled in the organization’s record books for having the highest-certified female-led hit ever, the ‘E.T.‘ hitmaker also quietly celebrated another out-of-this-world achievement at the time.

From naming Nicki Minaj as the greatest female rapper of all time to crowning her hit ‘Super Bass‘ as the greatest female Hip-Hop song ever on its ‘500 Best Pop Songs List,’ Billboard is no stranger to making tongues wag and jaws drop over the years for their polarizing “best-ever” tallies.

That trend is one that continued with their latest list, ‘The 100 Best Rap Albums of All Time,’ which was comprised solely of studio albums and ranked its roster based on commercial performance on Billboard as well as subjective criteria like cultural impact, longevity, and more.

And while the list was expectedly male-dominated (with Nas‘ groundbreaking 1994 LP ‘Illmatic‘ printed at #1), its inclusion of females was undoubtedly noteworthy.

With R&B darlings and six female rappers on its performance roster, Sunday’s BET Awards (June 30) already had a heavy dose of girl power.

But, the lady-led tribute to Usher drove that point all the way home when it assembled the stage-blazing talents of Tinashe, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monet, KeKe Palmer, Coco Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, and Chloe Bailey to perform some of the music megastar’s greatest hits.

And while their composite performance had Ush, live audience members, and viewers at home on their feet with a standing ovation, some critics took to the net to voice disappointment that Donald Glover was the only taste of testosterone over the nearly 17-minute showing.

Among those making headlines for this view are superstar singer-songwriter Eric Bellinger and veteran screen actress Elise Neal.

Victoria Monet and Teyana Taylor may have already given each other flowers over their epic contribution to the star-studded BET Awards tribute to Usher, but little did they know their nod to the R&B superstar’s legendary 2004 performance of ‘Bad Girl‘ featuring Beyonce would garner praise from the original performers.

Viewers of Sunday’s BET Awards (June 30) are still buzzing after the nearly 17-minute long tribute to Usher assembled some of Urban music’s best and brightest to toast the R&B superstar’s 30-year career and treasure trove of hits.

Yet, while many took to social media to heap praise on the female-led performance that featured the likes of KeKe Palmer, Victoria Monet, Latto, Chloe Bailey, Marsha Ambrosius, Tinashe, Summer Walker, Teyana Taylor, and Coco Jones, others fled to the platforms to complain about the glaring dearth of testosterone (barring Childish Gambino).

And though some wondered why the likes of Luke James, WanMor, Lucky Daye, October London, Durand Bernarr, and other male R&B crooners weren’t tapped to lend their talents to the moment, the honoree himself was not among those wielding complaints.
