As the world collectively mourns the loss of a Hip-Hop titan DMX, From The Vault is back this week with his beloved collaboration with R&B princess Aaliyah.
Today’s pick is ‘Come Back in One Piece.’
Produced by Irv Gotti and based on a Parliament sample of ‘Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk,’ the song sees the singer urging her boyfriend to be careful while he’s running the streets — though he does little to reassure her.
The track was released as the third single from the soundtrack to the movie ‘Romeo Must Die’ – which both artists starred in.
The song charted at #36 of the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B charts and has been praised for being a successful common ground for two artists with seemingly opposite styles.
Its video was directed by Little X and was shot in DMX’s hometown of Yonkers and Mount Vernon in New York.
The duo served “hood love” and played up the track’s lyrics hanging out in gloomy hallways, walking big dogs, and engaging in street antics.
For many, this is a timeless audio-visual piece that captures the otherworldly energy and aura of two of the most inspiring artists of modern times.
This week, we lost a tremendous talent, one whose legendary status is unquestionable. Indeed, DMX has been a pillar of the culture for decades and will most definitely continue to be.
We find solace in knowing his passing will encourage the younger generation – who might not be familiar with his back catalog – to dig in the vault and let X give it to ‘em.
Legends never die, they continue to live on and inspire.
DMX, we salute you and we thank you.
