Pioneers of the music video may have nursed MTV from its infancy, but by 1989, the very vehicle that helped transport many to chart summits threatened to desert them for refusing to evolve with the art form into the next decade.

And while some protested prioritizing the maturing medium, Madonna – a video virtuoso who’d pushed the visual needle forward faster and farther than any of her female contemporaries – had become its gold standard.  Barring King of Pop Michael Jackson, no other artist had taken command of the platform quite like she had – elevating musical clips from mere performance cuts to full-on short films.

As 1990 approached, the diva, albeit at the most untouchable phase of her superstardom, was still 30-something in an increasingly ageist music industry.  The harsh reality of that (and the changing musical tide around her) made morphing that much more of a necessity for Pop’s top chameleon.

Her answer to the challenge?  The Shep Pettibone-produced ‘Vogue.’

While most artists have postponed their single and/or album drops in the wake of the ongoing global health crisis, Pop diva Dua Lipa went against the grain to advance the release of her highly anticipated sophomore album, ‘Future Nostalgia’ (as we reported here).

Due in part to an unexpected early leak, ‘Nostalgia’s arrival – kicked off by her highest Hot 100-charting single to date, ‘Don’t Start Now,’ as well as the critically acclaimed cut ‘Physical’ – was also preceded by the early release of its latest single, ‘Break My Heart.’

Taking center stage in ways like never before (as none of its 11 tracks have a listed feature), what the LP lacks in high profile guest stars it certainly makes up for with a who’s who of producers.  Collecting beats and lyrics from the likes of some of Pop’s heaviest hitters (i.e. Stuart Price, The Monsters and the StrangerzJeff Bhasker, Ian Kirkpatrick, and more), look inside for your first listen:

Needless to say, the rhetoric wasn’t exactly well-received.  Look inside to see what we mean:
