Harry Styles is apparently headed one direction – to the top of the charts!

After December 2019 saw him earn his second chart-topper on the Billboard 200 courtesy of his sophomore album, ‘Fine Line’ (as we reported here), the 26-year-old is seeing the set’s third single – ‘Adore You’ – poised to replicate that success on the Billboard Hot 100.

Alicia Keys had quite the hefty promo schedule lined up before the coronavirus pandemic forced her to reschedule the release of her new album, ‘A.L.I.C.I.A.,’ originally due on shelves March 20 (as we reported here).

Yet, while she pressed pause on some of those ventures, others – as evidenced by the most recent ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ episode – pressed forward.

Taking to the outlet, the 39-year-old reminisced on her Hell’s Kitchen upbringing, the beginning of her career (namely the creation of her first chart-topper, ‘Fallin’), new book, and new music.  An engaging sit down resident correspondent Tracy Smith, Keys also dished on the price of fame and how becoming a mother helped her get to know herself better.  The latter concept served as a centerpiece for her recently released book, ‘More Myself’ (click here to learn more).

As we reported here, The Weeknd, thanks to his latest album, ‘After Hours,’ is already projected to capture the top spot of next week’s Billboard 200 with the biggest sales of the year among solo acts – a title he snatched from fellow Urban hitmaker Lil Uzi Vert (click here to read more).

Now, to further extend the distance between himself and the competition he’s called on Vert to assist with the ‘Hours’ deluxe edition.  Though the project’s standard release stands featureless, the updated version adds five bonus tracks including remixes to its Hot 100 top 20 hits ‘After Hours,’ ‘Blinding Lights,’ and ‘Heartless.’

The latter sees Vert serve as guest, a returned favor (if you will) to The Weeknd who featured on the 25-year-old’s song ‘Unfazed’ found on his debut studio album, 2017’s ‘Luv is Rage 2.’

The year was 2007. And while the masses were grooving to the soulful silkiness from the likes of  Amy Winehouse, a song snuck up and took the world by storm. In the process ushering in a new era in music.

Today’s From The Vault pick is the infectious ‘Crank That’ by Soulja Boy.

Produced and written by Soulja Boy himself, the track was his debut single and was received with worldwide acclaim, because of its instructional structure and catchy hooks and chants.

The track shot to the top the charts in the US and reigned for a seismic seven weeks. In the UK, it peaked at #2, and was also a Top 5 smash in Australia and Canada peaking at #3 and #5 respectively.

In the United States, it was named the 23rd biggest song of the 00’s, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Talk about a debut.

The song’s instruction-driven video was directed by Dale Resteghini. Within, it presents the head of Collipark Records taking an interest in signing Soulja after discovering the whole city embracing dance craze.

Over a decade later, the song has an impressive 431 million views on YouTube and remains a firm fixture on plenty of turn up playlists on Spotify and beyond.

Many many, the ‘Crank That’ phenomenon was the catalyst for all the various instructional dance crazes which followed.

With everybody and their mama – quite literally – hopping on the TikTok train, we can’t help but imagine just how bigger ‘Crank That’ would have been if that platform existed in 2007.

Though Soulja Boy is rarely included on anybody’s Top 10 Best Rappers Of All Time tally, he has managed to make the world dance as one with this very song; a feat most of his more respected peers can’t say they achieved.
