Celebrating the 18th anniversary of its release this month, Kelly Rowland recently took a stroll down memory lane to commemorate the accomplishments of ‘Independent Women’ –  the history-making, chart-topping single of Destiny’s Child.  Spending a whopping 11 consecutive weeks at #1 in late 2000 through early 2001, the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ soundtrack cut not only became a female empowerment anthem but also a fan favorite from the group’s prized collection of hits.

“I’m so proud to be a part of such a historical record,” Rowland shared. “Especially now when you watch the marches, you see some of the lyrics being quoted on some of the huge banners and posters everyone has. You’re just like, ‘This is incredible!’ It’s a song that is, how old? You know what I mean? And it’s still so relevant. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”

But, when quizzed on if DC3 will be contributing to the soundtrack of the film’s reboot, Kelly gave a surprising answer.  Hear it from her lips inside:

Michelle Obama has embraced music as a powerful medium during the President’s tenure in the White House.

Granted we’d love to see the First Lady give the Pop girls a run for their money, this track doesn’t see her sing.

Instead, she leads a multitude of female stars on the track, which aims to raise awareness for the US government’s #62MillionGirls campaign. Said initiative focusses on seeking help for girls around the world who unable to go to school due to the lack of opportunities.

Penned by the iconic Diane Warren and executive produced by AOL MAKERs, the song – which features the likes of Kelly Rowland, Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Zendya, and Janelle Monae – is available to listen to below…
