While the dropping or outright dismissal of most of her civil and sexual assault complaints against producer Dr. Luke could be looked at as setbacks, fans of Kesha can rejoice at news the ‘Warrior’ singer is still fighting to have her new music heard, she reveals in a new interview with New York Times.

The NYT piece, her first since all of her legal drama began, sees the singer/songwriter pour fresh details on music she’s been working on, including over 20 songs she turned in to Sony for review over summer 2016.  However, the issues – as the NYT article asserts – are the following:

  • In having to remain ‘reasonably consistent in concept and style to the artistic concept and style’ of her original recordings (or the persona already built for her), if the songs submitted do not fall in line with the prescribed she may not be able to release them
  • She is funding her small touring and recording efforts out of pocket, which is increasingly difficult given her limited income and inability to create and promote new music.  The money she is making is funding her legal efforts.
  • Sony has permitted her to work with other producers (though her camp vehemently denies this)

Shortly after the story hit the presses, Luke’s lawyer offered a fiery clapback that not only branded the singer’s claims as “inaccurate”, but also suggested the NYT piece was simply another means to “mislead the public” and “gain unwarranted sympathy.”  More details inside:

Welcome to the latest TGJ Roundtable!

Over the years, That Grape Juice has established a distinguished voice that – whether loved or loathed – sparks discussion, debate, and on occasion drama!

Though comprised of seasoned writers who share a similar outlook on Urban Pop culture, the idiosyncrasies of the TGJ team members often lend for quite heated debates “behind the scenes” about the hottest topics.

Now, we give you a front row seat to the show. In a format similar to ‘The View’ or ‘The Real’, TGJ editors – Sam, David, Rashad, and Joe – get real in a very candid way.

Today’s roundtable topic sees us review…

Lady Gaga’s ‘Joanne’

It’s been nearly three years since the last time we pressed play on a new album from pop eccentric Lady Gaga by her lonesome.  Granted, part of that time lapse was due to forays outside of her main genre with mentor/jazz legend Tony Bennett and work on television via FX’s hit ‘American Horror Story’ series, but much of it was presumed time taken to recoup from the critical and relative commercial failure that was 2013’s ‘ArtPop.’

With word she was set to reconnect with longtime hitmaking partner-in-crime RedOne, fans and critics alike were undoubtedly expecting a “return to form” for the songstress upon the official unveiling of her 2016 efforts.  While they got no such thing in the set’s first releases, ‘A-Yo,’ ‘Million Reasons,’ and, of course, ‘Perfect Illusion,’ diehards were still singing anticipatory praises to the album (‘Joanne’).  The masses – as evinced by the poor performance of each of the previously mentioned tunes on the Billboard Hot 100 – were not so easily convinced.

Fast forward to its release date (October 21st), the album – even at a discounted $3.99 – is being greeted with low buzz and mixed review.  But, as usual, the only reviews we care about are yours – That Grape Juice faithful.

That’s why we’ve come to ask…

Grammy-winning R&B gem Fantasia has always shone as an anomaly (in many ways) for the genre.

A fiery performer whose career-long stage shows boast one of the most consistent deliveries of any of her contemporaries (and beyond), Fannie’s commitment to her craft seemed to be only matched by the commitment of her fan base.  Indeed, much like the failing music industry around her, each of her album’s numbers may have taken hits over time, but without fail, the figures associated with each of the songbird’s first week sales easily soared above the others in her lane  (a testament to fan loyalty if you ask us).

Well, that was until 2016’s ‘The Definition Of…‘ – the latest addition to the soulstress’s self-coined ‘Rock-Soul’ movement.

Released July 2016, ‘Definition’ – Fannie’s fifth album – was executive produced by veteran record producer/songwriter/engineer Ron Fair and featured contributions from the likes of R&B royal R. Kelly, Brian Kennedy, Stacy Barthe, Neff-U, and more.  Yet, while the production credits was lined with proven winners, their efforts seemed lost upon music lovers who generally ignored the set’s two official singles – ‘No Time (For It)’ and the Kelly-penned ‘Sleeping With the One I Love.’

Their failure on the singles chart and streaming front seemed to signal the worst for their parent album:
