Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature carved out to celebrate TV and Film’s glorious and informative past.

Today, we step back to 1998 to revisit ‘Beloved‘, the movie starring Oprah Winfrey, Kimberly Elise, Danny Glover and Thandie Newton.

Based on the Toni Morrison novel of the same name, the film deals with the horrific and traumatic lives of enslaved African-Americans after slavery was abolished in 1864 and the desperate measures they took to protect their children during the trade.

In the book and movie, we are introduced to a woman (portrayed by Winfrey) who, much to the horror of her community, murders her children to stop them from being captured by oppressors.

While some stars shy away from illuminating their views on recent events in the US, Beyonce is addressing the issue head-on.

Following the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police officers, Queen Bey urged fans to put pressure on authorities act.

Many shared her sentiment to protest peacefully, however a select few have resorted to violence (which is never the answer). One such instance was an incident in Dallas which saw Micah Johnson shoot 11 police officers, five of which have since died.

The powerful quote above is lifted from Miguel‘s heartfelt number ‘How Many’ – the latest in a string of musical tributes lifted to African American victims of police brutality.

A stirring demonstration of hope and frustration, Miggy took to his official Soundcloud page to unveil the first version of ‘How Many,’ a track he says is not finished but will be “updated every week until its complete.”

Harper’s Bazaar is the No Doubt diva’s latest stop – and oh does she make it count.

Flaunting fierce fashions, the 46-year-old looks all sorts of lush in the accompanying spread – which features in the August issue of the publication.

With tickets to shift, it’s great to see Stefani not letting the slow-go quell her fire. Sometimes, all it takes is consistency and fervency to get the wheels turning.

Ciara‘s wedding to Russell Wilson made headlines across the globe. And it looks set to remain a fixture, now that the power pair have released official shots from the nuptials.

The couple’s elaborate union took place at the Peckforton Castle in Cheshire, England on Wednesday (July 6th).

100 of the newlywed’s family and friends jetted over for their big day, including Kelly Rowland, La La Anthony, and Kelly Rowland. A number of Wilson’s fellow Seattle Seahawks attended, as did his brother and sister.
