While music’s supreme diva Aretha Franklin will forever reign as the ‘Queen of Soul,’ her current reign as the queen of the Billboard Hot 100 is finding itself threatened by a school of relative newcomers – Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, and, now, Rihanna.
While Swift and Minaj are quickly on the trail of Franklin’s record for “most entries of any female artist” (Franklin leads with 73 total), the ‘Shake It Off’ country pop singer – by her lonesome – has surpassed Franklin’s historic top 40 record. With 49 top 40 entries, Taylor is now tied for the “all-time” top spot (among female artists) with Queen of Pop Madonna.
But, before she gets too comfortable on the perch, she is soon to be joined by songbird Rihanna’s surpassing of the legendary ‘Respect’ singer. For, after besting some of the Hot 100 records set by Whitney Houston, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Mariah Carey, it appears Riri has Rere in her sights. Courtesy of her latest hit, ‘Needed Me,’ the Bajan beauty is set to close the gap between herself and Swift.
