Today though, just 24 hours after his sudden death, the Purple One sits in the #1 position on the Billboard 200 chart.

Earlier today we reported the rapid rate at which the late legend’s catalogue was selling at retail.
Now the numbers are in (via Hits Daily Double) and they paint a compelling picture.

‘The Very Best of Prince’ compilation has charged to the top of the Billboard count with pure sales of 96,000 – a number which rises to 172,000 when factoring in the new Sales Plus Streaming system.
Largely hailed as the icon’s magnum opus, ‘Purple Rain’ powered to #2 with 55k sold. ‘The Hits and B-Sides’ hit #7 with 22k. Outside the top 10, ‘1999’ danced its way to #14 with 12k shifted.
Completing the top 40 takeover, ‘Ultimate: Prince’ registered at #23 and ‘Sign O’ the Times’ earned the #37 spot.
In just 24 hours, Prince has sold over 200,000 albums and upwards of 900,000 singular songs.
