It’s that time of year again!
The air is still buzzing as Thursday (July 30) brought with it the highly anticipated 2020 MTV VMA nominations.
But, what also came with the announcement were jaw-dropping surprises, snubs, and all out “shut-outs.”
While fans of Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd are singing the network’s praises for the recognition bestowed upon their 2019 and 2020 hits, supporters of Nicki Minaj, Camila Cabello, Beyoncé, and more aren’t joining that chorus.
Look inside to see our picks for this year’s biggest and most unjust snubs:
The MTV Video Music Awards 2020 will be heating up screens on August 30th live from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 30th.
Hailed as one of the most important days on the Pop music calendar, all eyes are on who is up for the coveted Moonmen handed out at the show’s latest installment.
Unveiled in full Thursday (July 30), the network sent fans of Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga into a frenzy as it was announced the pair leads with multiple nominations. Elsewhere on the tally, the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd scored major looks.
From The Vault is back this week with a Pop classic from 2008.
Today’s pick comes courtesy of mother-to-be Katy Perry: it’s the smash hit ‘Hot n Cold.’
After zooming up the charts with breakout single ‘I Kissed A Girl’, Katy proved that she was no novelty act with ‘Hot’ — the second single from her second album ‘One Of The Boys.’
Written by Dr Luke, Benny Blanco and Max Martin, the cut was produced by the latter and was another success for Perry. Peaking at #3 in the US, #4 in both the UK and Australia, and reaching the top spot in Canada, it was also nominated at the GRAMMY for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2010.
The song sees the artist confronting an undecided lover about how toxic his behavior is to their relationship.
Alan Ferguson directed the colorful video which presented Ms. Perry as a bride hunting down her love-interest all over town after he fails to say “I do” at the altar.
Katy’s parents make a brief cameo.
As of July 2020, the video is just under 20 million views away from hitting the billion mark.
********
Keeping it 100, we still can’t pin point the exact reason why Katy stopped ruling the charts the way she was during her first three album cycles.
From ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ to ‘Harleys in Hawaii,’ she has kept on churning out top tier bops, not too far removed from her most successful and acclaimed hits – qualitatively speaking.
Anyhow, here’s hoping Ms. Perry’s next project ‘Smile’ is one filled with yet more of her signature Pop bops, akin to ‘Hot N Cold.’
Roll on August!
The hit TV series ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ has seen a number of its leading ladies rocked by an army of tweets criticising them for “ganging up” on ‘Housewife’ Denise Richards and using the series to defame her.

Social media is weighing in August Alsina‘s ‘Entanglement’….the song in which he details his romantic relationship with Will Smith‘s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Media spectators fear the relationship, and the details surrounding it, may sully Will Smith‘s public image as a virile All-American alpha male after Alsina claimed that the actor (who is almost twice his age) gave him permission to bed his wife.
Will denies the claim…but that’s done little to stop talk that the scandal is humiliating.

Alfre Woodard‘s illustrious career adds an incredible new chapter named ‘Clemency.’
Directed by Chinonye Chukwu, the harrowing prison drama won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and deservingly so.
The film sees Woodard deliver a masterful performance as death row Warden Bernadine Williams.
Throughout its course, ‘Clemency’ hones in on the tall toll executions and their preceding moments take on Williams.
Central to the story is her interaction with a particular prisoner (played by Aldis Hodge), who maintains his innocence.
Ahead of the film’s UK release on July 17th, That Grape Juice‘s Samuel Eni caught up with the revered actress, who opened up about the role, the move towards equality in Black in Hollywood, advice for young creatives, and much more.
Designed much like our ‘Retro Rewind’ and ‘From the Vault’ segments, ‘Replay’ is That Grape Juice‘s retrospective segment – a written quest, if you will, to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday.
Unlike its ‘Rewind’ and ‘Vault’ predecessors, ‘Replay’ looks to dust off and showcase entire albums (and eras) from a library of Pop and Urban Pop music hits.
In celebration of its 17th anniversary (July 1), join us as we reflect on Ashanti‘s ‘Chapter II.’
