Rap legend Heavy D — one of the most influential rappers of the ’90s — died earlier today … TMZ has learned.

Heavy D — real name Dwight Arrington Myers — was rushed to an L.A. hospital around noon today … and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1 PM. He was 44 years old.

We’ve learned a 911 call was placed from Heavy’s Beverly Hills home around 11:25 AM to report an unconscious male on the walkway .

When help arrived, we’re told Heavy D was conscious and speaking — and was transported to a nearby hospital.

He died a short time later.

Cops are investigating the death — and so far, there are no obvious signs of foul play.

Heavy D had several massive hits — including “Now That We Found Love.” He also wrote and performed the theme song for “In Living Color” … and appeared as an actor in the movie “Life.”

Sad. We just saw him live in action at the Michael Jackson tribute here in the UK.

Our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to his family

The last few years have seen Pop’s arena welcome a troupe of fresh faced Gladiators all competing in tandem to win the affections of the  record-buying public.

There is Rihanna, whose weapon of choice changes with the sway of public opinion. Ever ready to vaguely adapt to what she believes will help her win the fight.

Then there is Katy Perry and Ke$ha, with swords forged deep in the pits of Dr. Luke‘s imaginirium. Satisfied with receiving whatever spoils of war a certain Britney Spears is too pre-occupied to claim for herself.

From the realm of Rap comes Nicki Minaj, with a battle axe stolen from Lil Kim‘s weapons cabinet.  Slicing through Hip Hop’s archaic code and conventions to carve her name in the sand as Rap’s first Pop Empress, ready for battle at any given moment.

Then of course is the reigning champion Lady GaGa, equipped with a glitter stained double edged sword. Controversy on one edge and undeniable talent on the other.

And while these assassins battle each other, hoping to out-perform one another in the pits of Pop’s amphitheatre, an unlikely contender watches from the crowd.

A lone voice amidst the noise that is Contemporary Pop.

She is Adele. Pop’s unlikely Warrior Queen.

After a tumultuous 2011, seasonal performer Cheryl Cole is attempting to stage a press comeback ahead of the inevitable release of new material. Indeed, without the X Factor machine, many wonder how the 28 year old will fare with the new album she’s been conjuring up with will.i.am and Alex Da Kidd in the States.

To aid her cause, the ousted X Factor USA judge strikes many fierce pose in the December issue of InStyle magazine.

Her singing may leave everything to be desired, but she sure knows how to work that camera. Stunning.

‘The Voice’ Whitney Houston took to Entertainment Tonight moments ago to share the latest news on her forthcoming movie production ‘Sparkle’ – a remake of the famed 1976 musical.  Boasting an all star cast (Cee-Lo Green, Jordin Sparks) and R. Kelly manning the soundtrack production, the film looks to be a knockout!

Her first televised interview in quite some time, the ‘I Look To You’ belter looked stunning (to say the least) in tonight’s Entertainment Tonight exclusive.

As news and anticipation grows for its release,   ‘Only Girl In the World’ wailer Rihanna has caused quite the commotion with her announcement that the only feature to guest her forthcoming ‘Talk That Talk’ (Nov. 21st) will be mentor/label-head Jay Z.  The ‘Umbrella’ co-stars last effort made quite the splash on Billboard, landing at number 1 – the same spot her current single ‘We Found Love’ can be found.

With the album’s release only two weeks away, the ‘Unfaithful’ singer is undoubtedly preparing for a media onslaught which will see her first televised performances of ‘Love’ as well as her contribution to Coldplay‘s ‘Princess of China’.  The latter recently cementing the young singer’s singles record after it notched her 21st top 20 entry.
