As unique trajectories go, few can rival that of Nelly Furtado.

Flying onto the mainstream scene in the year 2000, the Canadian songstress made seismic waves with her breakout hit ‘I’m Like a Bird’ and firmly established herself as one of the leading faces of Folk-Pop.

By the middle of that decade, though, she experienced quite the metamorphosis after teaming with Timbaland. A union that birthed her biggest era to date. From ‘Promiscuous,’ ‘Maneater,’ and ‘Say It Right’ to their housing album ‘Loose,’ Furtado was inescapable.

The years that followed were characterized by hiatuses and a handful of releases that earned critical praise but not so much in the way of commercial resonance.

Now, with those chapters in rearview, it looks like the star is ready for another musical metamorphosis. And she’s not short on material!

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) crowns any song or album that’s gone Platinum ten times as Diamond – meaning it’s sold 10 million units in the United States.

Once an elusive accomplishment, the inclusion of streaming figures in its calculation for the certification has seen the number of songs that have achieved the status skyrocket.

Yet, despite 110 songs owning a Diamond plaque over the RIAA’s 70-year history, less than 1% have been bestowed to Black female singers – a count that grew recently thanks to Pop diva Rihanna.

BET and Gabrielle Union have put their rocky past behind them and are moving forward with an exciting new venture to chronicle the award-winning actress’ journey toward a personal landmark.

In honor of celebrating her 50th birthday last October, Union teamed with the network’s streaming counterpart, BET+, for a two-part special that documented her “epic, continental journey through Africa” and saw her touch down in South Africa, Zanzibar, Ghana, and more with her family and closest friends.

“I’ve always had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. Connecting with the birthplace of civilization and my own ancestry helped me inch closer to my true self,” said Union in a statement. “There was no other place I wanted to spend my 50th birthday. It was an experience I’ll never forget and I’m excited for audiences to join me on the journey.”

From claiming he was a better rapper than Drake and Lil Wayne to suggesting his dating numbers were similar to Taylor Swift‘s (and that the ‘Midnights‘ diva should be his next baby mama), multi-hyphenate star Nick Cannon is no stranger to sharing a polarizing opinion on some of music’s biggest names.

His latest tread in that vein came courtesy of a recent episode of his podcast, ‘The Daily Cannon,’ where the 42-year-old fired off about his admiration of Bruno Mars. Amid his praise of the ‘Grenade‘ hitmaker’s explosive live performances, Cannon launched into a debate with his co-hosts about who has more hits: Bruno or Beyonce.

Needless to say, the conversation got heated and eventually trickled over to Twitter when Nick asserted Bey’s list of hits paled in comparison.
