The video for Kelly Rowland’s latest single ‘Ghetto’ premiered on BET’s Access Granted just a few moments ago. I was hoping for something a bit more than what the vid had to offer, but it turned out pretty good nonetheless. Kelly was looking on-point and both she and Snoop had real good chemistry. I’m not so sure about some of the effects – they worked in places and didn’t in others. Still, I don’t have much to complain about… Jesus lives, Kelly finally has a new video out! Here’s hoping this reignites interest in the project in preparation for the ‘Ms. Kelly’ re-release.

Currently riding high on the charts with her smash hit ‘Let It Go’, Keyshia Cole also appears on the cover of the October issue of Essence Magazine. In the main feature, the singer speaks on her tough upbringing, relationships and being compared to Mary J. Blige. Check out her take on being compared to the ‘Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul:

ESSENCE: How do you feel about constantly being compared to Mary J. Blige?

COLE: I feel like we are very similar based on everything we’ve been through in our personal lives. It’s helped make us sing the way we sing. Because she didn’t have a vocal coach, and neither did I. And when I met her I told her, “You winning all those Grammy’s—congratulations—it gives me inspiration to this day that maybe I can do the same thing.” You know, it’s just a real big life circle. I think there are a lot of things that she could tell me that’d help me. I’m not trying to take nobody’s place or nothing like that. But I’m just saying, as a woman—as a young Black woman—if she knows some of the answers, Give ’em to me!” (Laughing.) But she said that I could call her anytime. I just haven’t done it yet.

I’m liking the way she answered that one. Still, I’m sure the comparisons will continue. You can the whole interview in the magazine – which is on newsstands now. A tidbit: the second season of Keyshia’s BET reality show will premiere October 30th.

Terrible. This basically sums up 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. I was already sceptical about the show considering the so-so line-up of performers, but it was a complete mess.

Setting the tone for the night was opener Britney Spears. With all that’s gone on, I was hoping she’d silence the naysayers, but this was a complete and utter and trainwreck. A combination of poor lipsyching, stiff choreography and an outfit that revealed her out of shape body, Britney’s performance will no doubt have many saying her career is over. It will be if she doesn’t find a way to redeem herself from that mess.

Most of the night’s other performers offered little of interest. Although I must give Rihanna props for doing her thing during Chris Brown’s so-so performance and later on during ‘Shut Up & Drive’.

The show wasn’t all bad, though. Alicia Keys’ performance was a standout. She nailed ‘No One’, making me like the song all the more. I wasn’t initially all that hyped for her performance, but she was definitely the highlight of what was a mediocre night (at best).

MTV really need to step it up and the show has been on a downward spiral for years. I was thinking it was all award shows, but the BET Awards this year really showed out – beating this mess hands down. SMH…

Some of you may remember Teyana Taylor from an episode of MTV’s ‘Sweet Sixteen’. The Harlem native is hit-maker Pharrell Williams’ new protégé and is signed to his label Star Trak. A triple threat in her own right (she can sing, rap and dance), Teyana seems destined for big things. Below are extracts of her feature in the current issue of Trace Magazine where she speaks on how she taught Beyonce to dance, her alternate look and how she hooked up with Pharrell. Check it out:

On Teaching Beyonce:
Beyoncé even enlisted Teyana to teach her the dance for a segment in her “Ring The Alarm” video.

“She was mad focused and really wanted to learn,” recalls Teyana.

On Her Look:
“I always stood out as far as dressing,” she says. “I like to look different and people know me for that. My look is a mix of old-school hip-hop and skater.”

On Pharrell:
“I sang for the Senior Vice President of A&R at Universal, and he asked me the top five people I would really want to work with and my first three were Pharrell. It was crazy to meet him. I mean I love that dude and we connected,” Teyana recalls.

Pharrell couldn’t agree more, “I heard about how talented she was, and I wanted to meet her. I was impressed she could, sing, dance and rap, so we gave her a shot.”

Although she came across real bratty on the the show (which is the point of it, I guess), I was definitely feeling her whole ‘alternate’ vibe and the fact she’s bringing something different to the table. For more info on Teyana check out her Myspce: www.myspace.com/rockstarteyana

It appears Foxy Brown’s reckless behaviour has caught up with her. Brown, real name Inga Marchand has been sentenced to one year in prison for violation of probation. Check out TMZ’s report below:

Foxy Brown will spend the next year in jail for violating her probation — and she’s going straight back to a cell on Rikers Island, where she’s spent the last two weeks. TMZ was in the courtroom when it all went down, and Judge Melissa Jackson slammed Foxy’s pleas for mercy, calling her a “great actress,” and saying that if this were the first time she’d apologized, she might be believable, but not now. We’re told that Foxy was visibly distraught by the verdict, and her mother refused to talk to reporters outside. Foxy originally was sentenced to the probation after an assault on two employees at a nail salon in Manhattan.

Outside the courtroom, cops from New Jersey — where she allegedly lied to cops about her birthdate and state of residence — told TMZ that she got what she deserved. Interesting note: if she serves the full term, Foxy will give birth in prison.

I can’t say she doesn’t deserve it. It’s just messed up that her baby will be born in jail because it’s mother is a nut.

As reported, the Fashion Rocks 2007 concert took place in New York City this week. A host artists performed at the star-studded event including Usher, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson. Check out some of the performances below:

Usher & Mary J Blige.
It’s A Man’s World, Respect & Do I Do

Jennifer Lopez
Do It Well / Waiting For Tonight

Jennifer Hudson
Come Together

Alicia Keys
The Thing About Love

For the first time in the longest, I felt everyone did great. One of the standouts, for me, was Usher & Mary’s performance. With the way Usher was nailing the James Brown choreography I was left thinking ‘Justin who?’. Jennifer Hudson was also a standout; it was good seeing her sing something different. She really has a great stage presence too. I was pleasantly surprised with J. Lo’s performance – she is far from a great vocalist, but her live singing has improved a lot.

R&B star Alicia Keys has been added to the list of performers at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. The Grammy Award winning singer is slated to perform her new single ‘No One’ at the Las Vegas event. Keys joins previously announced performers 50 Cent, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Common, Nelly Furtado, Akon, Soulja Boy, T-Pain and Cee-Lo (of Gnarls Barkley). {Source}
Though Alicia always delivers with her performances, I can’t say I’m too hyped about this one. I like ‘No One’, but can’t help but feel she could have come a bit harder than she did with that track. Still, with the line-up kinda lacking any performers of real interest, Alicia is good addition.

The cover for Jennifer Lopez’s forthcoming album ‘Brave’ has surfaced, courtesy of JLofan.com. Put simply, it’s a mess. I’m surprised she decided to go with this, as it looks like a real bad Photoshop attempt. The songs I’ve heard from the CD so far haven’t conveyed any particular theme of the album, so this cheap 80’s disco nonsense cannot be justified. Here’s hoping the music is better than the cover.

What do you think of the cover?

R&B star Usher appeared on the Season 5 premiere of the Ellen Degeneres show yesterday (September 4th). The ‘Yeah’ singer discussed a number of things including his controversial marriage to Tameka Raymond (which is how he introduced her) and their child – due toward the end of the year. He also plugged his new fragrance line ‘Usher He/She’.

He really seems to have found ‘the one’ in Tameka and I can’t hate on him for that. Though, with all the media scrutiny and his momma’s disapproval, it’ll be interesting to see how long this lasts. On a side note, I’m kinda surprised he didn’t plug his upcoming album – it is still slated for a November release, right?

*Before I continue, let me just say that I’m in no way confirming this to be true – so don’t shoot the messenger lol*
Throughout this season of ‘Making The Band’ rumors have been circulating about the sexuality of a number of the show’s contestants. Qwanell, who eventually made the group, has long been touted as one of the ‘suspect’ guys on the show. The extra reliable Media Take Out (wink wink) reported on the story- without naming anyone- shortly after the finale, yet another ‘source’ has come forward backing up the claim. Check it out:

WE ALL KNOW THAT IT IS Q!!!! TAKE IT FROM ME… THE KING OF ALL DL [EXPLETIVE]!!!! HE IS NOT ONE OF US…. Q IS A STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN BOTTOM ASS [EXPLETIVE]. I HOPE I DO NOT GET IN TROUBLE FOR THIS, BUT HERE IT GOES……. I AM REALLY GOOD FRIENDS WITH JOHNATHON, WHO QUIT THE SHOW DURING THE DANCE EPISODE WITH LAURA. HE GETS DOWN, AS YOU ALL KNOW, AND TOLD ME THE Q OFTEN HIT ON HIM AND TRIED TO GET WITH HIM OFF CAMERA. BEING THAT DIDDY IS A HOMO HIMSELF, HE COULD SMELL THE GAY ACTION GOING DOWN. HE APPROACHED THEM BOTH AND TOLD THEM THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO MAN THE [EXPLETIVE] UP QUICK OR BE KICKED OFF BECAUSE HE COULD NOT HAVE HOMO DUDES IN THE BAND OR ON THE SHOW. LET ME NOT MENTION THAT HE MADE A PASS AT ONE OF THEM AND TOLD THEM THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO DO THINGS THEY MAY NOT LIKE IN ORDER TO ADVANCE. HE WAS NEVER REALLY AROUND AS YOU SAW, SO SOME [EXPLETIVE] HAD TO STEP UP AND DO THINGS FOR A CHANCE AT FAME OFF CAMERA.

DIDDY REALLY GOT PISSED OFF WHEN HE TRIED TO TURN HOMEBOY CARLOS WITH THE LONG HAIR OUT AND FAILED TO DO SO. THAT IS WHY THEY BROUGHT IN HIS PERSONAL SITUATION ON CAMERA AND HAD NO TYPE OF CONSIDERATION FOR HIM FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT KNOW, BRYAN M. COX, THE PRODUCER, GETS DOWN AS WELL. HE HELPED DIDDY MAKE CARLOS LOOK BAD , TO GIVE THE AUDIENCE A READON TO WANT HIM TO GET KICKED OFF, BECAUSE HE WOULD NOT DO SOME OF THE SEXUAL THINGS THEY WANTED OFF CAMERA. OF COURSE THESE [EXPLETIVE] ARE BOUND BY CONTRACT NOT TO SAY [EXPLETIVE], BUT YOU GQ IS GONNA TELL IT, BECAUSE I HAVE TO PUT GRIMY [EXPLETIVE] ON BLAST EVERY CHANCE I GET. THEY MUST LEARN SOME HOW.

ANYWAY, JOHN ALSO TOLD ME THAT Q WENT FURTHER WITH DIDDY IN THE BEDROOM AND CONVENCED HIM THAT HE COULD PASS FOR STRAIGHT FOR THE FEMALE AUDIENCE. THAT IS WHY YOU SAW JOHN SAY THAT HE DID NOT WANT THIS BAND AS MUCH AS THE OTHERS. HE WAS TIRED OF PUTTING HIS PERSONAL VALUES IN QUESTION. BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YALL SEE AND THINK WHEN IT EVER COMES TO DIDDY!!!!! MASE WAS NOT HIS FIRST OR LAST ARTIST EVER SIGNED TO BAD BOY WHO GETS DOWN. THERE WAS ALSO LOON, CARL THOMAS, BENTLEY, SLIM FROM 112 AND OF COURSE THE DIKE FROM TOTAL. YOU KNOW GQ HAD TO BRING IT TO YALL!!!

Whether this is true or not, I don’t know, but some of the things said definitely crossed my mind when watching…

As previously reported, Rihanna features in this month’s issue of Peach magazine. The Bajan star address a number of things including her father, her past image and competing with former label-mate Teairra Marie. Check out quotes from the interview:

On Her Relationship With Her Father:

“I am actually embarrassed by that. I don’t like speaking about it because I am not proud of it. But it is something that helped make me who I am today. Now people know that I am not perfect and that I had real conflicts. My dad is not pleased, because he is embarrassed. We still have not sat and had a conversation about it.”

On Her Past Image

“I felt like my girlie image was boring and contrived and generic. I was so restricted. I could not wear red lipstick. If I did I would get cursed out by my marketing person. I did a big performance on an awards show and I won some awards and [was happy] , but as soon as I got off the plane, I got the nastiest email from her about [my looks]. I then realized she was not treating me like a human being so I cut her off.

On Blowing Up After Playing Second Fiddle To Teairra Marie

That [was] a funny situation, but I always remained humble. I was just the little Caribbean girl. You have to be good to people. I could very easily say it’s all karma…God has favor on me and has blessed me, and I cannot even thank Him enough.

Hmm…seems like there must have been more to Teairra being dropped from Def Jam / Roc A’ Fella. She was more talented than Rihanna, in my opinion, and both of their first albums tanked – so something must have made the label choose to pull out all the stops for Rihanna’s success instead of Teairra.

What do you think of Rihanna’s comments?

Following the success of her debut single ‘Lip Gloss’, Lil’ Mama is back with 2nd single ‘G-Slide / Tour Bus’. The video for the track premiered on Yahoo’s Launch and BET Access Granted last night. Though not immediately as catchy as her debut, ‘G-Slide’ is pretty good – it’s a grower. As for the video, Lil’ Mama serves up more of the same great choreography and fun vibes that made the ‘Lip Gloss’ vid so good. I’m really liking the way doing things ‘different’, instead of following the norm – she reminds me of a little Missy Elliott’. This 17 year old is definitely one to watch out for.
