This was a cool lil performance!! The venue was appropriate, ATL is where Ciara gets the most support and love. Now if she can get some national type viewership, maybe So You Think You Can Dance. That song and dance, won’t get supported on Good Morning America or the Today Show, content is just a little racy, and Ciara doesn’t get that “pass” like other artist that have racy material but can perform just about any where.
Sidenote: There was no way Ciara was completely live, she was singing to a backtrack (the original vocals and all to the song), she was live when she shouted out to the crowd, but as far as singing during her dancing and bouncing…no she was not live. Hell her main vocals, were still playing in certain parts, before she could get the mic back to her face. To be more convincing next time, she should at re-record the vocals in a live venue and use a headset mic (check: Madonna, Janet, Britney, JLO, and Beyonce), for reference.

While I like Ciara and Ludacris the two of them together are too “Atlanta” and that’s NOT a good thing. I want Ciara to become a big star but I just keep feeling like she’s not going to ever break out of that “ghetto girl” image. Like when the poster from Atlanta was commenting and said “we was all winndenn”, Atlanta folks haven’t learned that NO ONE is impressed by the ability to do that well and definitely limits her broad appeal. It’s one thing to incorporate that into some really good choreography but when that becomes characteristic of your style you might as well be dead in the water (and so very Atlanta). My hopes were high beginning with “Promise” but it seems she polished her look but nothing else.
While her music will always have a “cotton candy” appeal for me, I am starting to think that she will not be a serious industry threat to Bey or Rhianna’s current musical dominance. And that’s too bad…..

I can understand a backtrack for the background vocals but she could have at least sang or sang over the backtrack for the lead vocals. Lol Ciara is an electrifying performer, I can testify to that as I’ve seen her live…, no she isn’t really a singer but when she’s on stage she commands it better than most vocalists. Comparisons to Aaliyah though are null and void, Aaliyah was enjoyable to listen to as well as look at and there was an old school musicality on every note she sang. Ciara is very much a nu-school artist weened on the Janet Jackson-template, which to me explains the limited vocals on offer but also how she is capable of shutting it down with just her performance skills alone.
I definitely think her future lies in chorepgraphy in a Fatima-kinda of way…, most industry watchers know who she is and respect her presence. Ciara gets shade because her thin voice is incapable of silencing her criticism…, conversely people could hate on Christina Aguilera’s relevance as a current pop act all day but they can never quash her relevance as a vocalist.
