Easily one of the year’s biggest Urban releases, Alicia Keys‘ latest studio album ‘Girl On Fire’ has been backed by a gurantuan promotional campaign; one which has taken the Grammy winner to many a stage globally.
Naturally, then, all eyes are on how the LP fares in the singer’s biggest market – the US. And now, with the help of Hits Daily Double, we’re able to provide a clearer picture of how the album is selling on home soil.
Ms. Keys’ first week predictions await after the jump…
According to the ever-reliable HDD, ‘Fire’ is set to blaze straight to the top of the Billboard 200 next week with sales of…
150,000 – 175,000
While commendable given the current sales climate, the numbers are a marked decrease from the 417,000 copies Keys’ last album ‘The Element Of Freedom’ opened with in 2009. In fact, should the project open with sales in the said region, it would serve as the 31 year old’s lowest selling debut (for a traditional release) – ever. For, even her first effort ‘Songs In A Minor’ premiered with sales of 236,000 in 2001.
We’ll save “two cents” for when the final numbers roll in. Still, though…

Funny how RCA obviously gave all of their money to this project in particular and the first week sales are underwhelming. Maybe if they did what they are supposed to, support their ARTIST(S), then they would be in better shape for this year. There’s no reason why Usher should have rushed that album out, there’s no reason why Chris Brown should have sold so little, and there’s most Definitely no reason why Brandy has not sold more. One can argue that the state of music does not cater to R&B and blah blah blah, but it can if the record companies take a chance and do what they’re there for. brandy has one of the best contemporary r&b albums out….why isn’t she promoting. Where’s her team? rCA needs to do some spring cleaning before they get into some situations they can’t get out of…

The numbers are solid, but Alica has always been a big seller plus she promoted like hell this era. This just confirms what we already knew which was that the music business is dying (other than those “it” pop girls, boys, and bands). This is so sad, talented people like A.Keys, Xtina, Brandy, Ne-Yo, etc are not selling as great as they used to, I guess times change. Didn’t they predict she will sell in the 300k range then sold over 400k in 09 most of her fans buy the album in stores so I think she will do around 250k. Not her best but without a hit, home wrecking scandal, and low albums sales I’m not that surprised all that promotion though!!!!!!!

Omg! I’m surprised. I thought she’d sell around 300-400k. R&B is dying. OK Beyonce needs to do lots of promo for her new album like Taylor Swift did with Red. Hopefully the Super Bowl, a possible Grammy performance and the documentary will be part of the pre-album promo. Releasing the first single in late January/early February and then the album in late February is too early. I hope she releases the album in March.

She’s the face of Estee Lauder and has been raking in editorial after editorial. They have her pinned to be the next “super model” of this generation which is a hard feat.
Furthermore, we saw the rise of the careers of Chanel Iman who is the only black angel; Jordan Dunn who has been the face of Burberry for nearly 3 consecutive seasons; and not to mention the influx of all the amazing Brazilian black beauties such as Lais Ribiero who was recently in a campaign for Tom Ford and continues to be a big force on the runway. Emanuela de Paula. And new comer French model Anais Mali, Cora Emmanuel, Melodie Monrose…. the list goes on & on so CLEARLY you pay no attention to the fashion industry. Stay in your lane.

Keyshia didn’t have but one album that underperformed, and that sould better than alot of other r&b albums. Her current album didn’t better than what they were forecasting. Alicia is a tremendous artist but I think that GOF is not a strong lead single hence why her sales for this album were lower than TEOF. That album had Doesnt mean anything and both Empire State of mind Pt 1 and 2 to lead it and those songs in particular were HITS! That’s what made me purchase those singles and that album. I wish her luck but I’m not feeling her new album personally.

The album is just blah. Actually her last three have been just blah. Girl on Fire is a terrible song. New day was wack. I like about 5 Songs on the album. I love my riri and I’m happy she has reached #1 with 238K. However I’m a sane member of the navy as well as the beehive(yes you can be both). Remember in 2011 the navy said Beyonce was done. She still did 310K with no top 10 or 20. I consider a hit anything within the 100 singles in the hot 100. Beyonce will do higher numbers then this and more than likely more than riri’s recent numbers. As for Alicia I’m going to need a greatest hits album and nothing more. But don’t be like brandy trying to release anymore after that greatest hits album. It doesn’t work now. See human and 2/11(Steel Reserve)lol

This is sad and shocking about Alicia’s sales considering the fact she does far bigger numbers than this. I keep saying this and I will say it again- the only artists selling right now are the ones with hits on POP radio. If you’re not on POP radio no one knows your project is out. I don’t understand why these labels refuse to push urban acts at POP radio.
I didn’t see any commercials (TV or radio) or billboards promoting Alicia, Miguel, Brandy, Keyshia or Monica when their albums were released. Without proper promotion dont expect big numbers.
Also, Alicia hasn’t had a hit since 2008 so I’m not sure why ppl are surprised that she flopped.

These numbers are POOR for someone of Alicia’s caliber. She used to debut with 400 or 700k. The reasons I think she is flopping are:
The lead single (It’s really horrible)
The live performances (Alicia sounds terrible. I’m surprised she was not urged to get singing lessons)
The stream of the cd (Alicia has good songs but sounds terrible on them. No one wants to listen to that)
Homewrecking (she lost fans with that situation)

Music industry is dying very quickly if you go pop you run the risk of getting plenty of hit singles but albums sales suffer aka chris brown,usher,flo rider,neyo etc… but if you stay rnb it seems you flop all together beyonce is lucky considering she never been a full blown rnb artist so she can easily go pop with elements of rnb and not be called a sell out….. seeing all these artists flop is sad times black artist are going to be pushed into indie status soon in the 90s they were major black artists everywere come 2012 u can count them on one hand

The urban crowd loves to illegally download music. They will buy your album if they feel like you’re worth it. And by worth it, I mean you GRIND like HELL! You release mixtapes, you are active on social media, you do shows etc etc. That’s why artists like Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz and J. Cole can sell so much. I believe that JHENE is the next R&B female to look out for. She has been grinding for a long time, and her mixtape is extremely successful. She’s currently on tour with NAS and LAURYN HILL. Those are horrible numbers for an artist of Alicia’s caliber. GOF juat might be her first dud sales wise.
R&B is not dying.
We have to keep in mind that Alicia probably lost a good amount of fans over the shit that is currently surrounding her personal life. Nobody likes a homewrecker, and not to mention that it seems as if she lost some of the general publics support.
She’ll be lucky to go platinum.

Well unfortunately for HDD they have a bad history of trying to pin down AK numbers they have been off by up to 200k with her past releases. I think she will come in around 400K from everything that I am seeing she is selling very well. When I purchased yesterday the sales person said she has been seeing it come through all day and by the time I got there they only had like 5 left. I think they are waaaaaaaay off.

In other words, they are right 99% of the time. Highly unlikely that AK is an exception to the general rule that the sales will fall within their predicted range. They may (or may not) slightly adjust the range when more numbers come in but it will not be the drastic difference you are contemplating. She’ll be lucky to debut pass 200K based on these early observations.

Ummm!!! I don’t have to lie, just check online, their prediction for TEOF was 100K off and their prediction for AIA was off by 200K, easily verifiable, but haters choose to believe what they want to believe and I understand that honey. I will get with you next week when the REAL numbers are in. Alicia Keys Audience go out and purchase, itunes is not their main source of purchase.

If this was Beyonce the word FLOP would be all over this page hundreds of times. Heck, Beyonce’s range with ’4′ was twice this amount and some people were still calling it a flop when it actually did pretty good. I’m sure AK is disappointed in these low numbers.

Im srry but lets clock some things right now. Tthese “but there wasnt any promo” excuses are so tired. Alicia Keys has been eerywhere plugging Girl on zfire and its 8 versions and her album. Commercials, a dozen performances and interviews. Theres been plenty of promotion. Exactly what is this epic Beyonce promotion that is the benchmark for “promotion”??? Its like if you don’t have 5 videos, 3 remixes, 10 magazine covers, a dozen interviews, two live performances every night……. You dont have any promo. GURLBYE. Alicia has had plenty of promotion, the public just isnt interested in her hoarse ass voice sounding like a bucket of cold water grrrrrrllllllllll

Mainstream R & B is simply on the decline. I, personally, have been listening to R & B underground for YEARS. Rahsaan Patterson, Lalah Hathaway, Jesse Boykins III, Jhene Aiko, Marques Toliver, Eric Roberson, Muhsinah, Anthony David, Rochelle Jordan, etc….THIS is the new brilliance of R & B.
Above ground progressive R & B – 1) Frank Ocean 2) Miguel 3) Elle Varner 4) The Weeknd
Mainstays: Mary, Brandy, Maxwell, Monica, Keyshia, Alicia, Trey, Chris, Usher (and we can consider the pop elements of a couple of these)
R & B is no longer the favored genre. Just like rock has fell out of favor. Please do not be confused by the artists on billboard who are considered rock–that is POP.
Alicia’s is simply settling into the current phase of R & B music sales.

Listened to this album a few times this week on AOL Listening Party and I wouldn’t buy it if it were in the bargain bin. Album is boring as hell, the Girl on Fire song sucks, and Nicki Minaj is the nail in the coffin. Save your money and buy something from a real artist who appreciates their fans like Anthony David.
