Beyonce‘s eagerly anticipated Super Bowl spectacle is merely a week away. And while little is known about the near 15 minute extravaganza, the budding icon has given a sneak peek at her preparation process via Instagram.
With rehearsals well under way in New Orleans, multiple sources close to That Grape Juice assert that fans are in for a showcase of epic proportions; one that will also bring with it a number of surprises. Take from that what you will.

The bottom line is that Beyonce was not built to last and is very “replaceable.” This is why she does not take breaks, and repetitiously puts out a generic by-the-numbers pop album every year. Being that she has little ‘star power,’. She mingles with the President to make her look important in order to sustain her momentum she has to continually strike while the iron is hot, while employing a multitude of petty ‘stunts’ to get attention (tacky baby, fake her colors,filling her butt with chemicals, referencing her tumultuous relationship with her dad to be in the cover of magazines.

” BEYONCE is cliche of everything that has ever been disingenuous about the music business. A soulless Barbie Doll, with plastic doll parts, who was plucked off the streets of no where and put on–simply because the outfit was her size. In other words: commerce…created and puppet mastered by money grubbing music executives as a tool to co-opt what is currently popular for fast cash, and pandered to the dingiest of music listeners who are not discerning enough to care.
You have to give the label, the management, the A&R people, the songwriters, the producers, the directors and the thousand other magicians involved their credit for being savvy enough to outfit this garden-variety debutante with material and promotion to keep her afloat…but let’s be real, there is nothing ‘special’ or ‘unique’ about BEYONCE, herself. She has little talent, no personality or strong image, nor does she command the stage. Anyone could have been cast in the role BEYONCE plays; she just lucked out. For all intents and purposes, BEYONCE is akin to a can of Hormel Chili; basically a canned product with a label (and a ‘sell by’ date) on it.
The bottom line is that BEYONCE was not built to last and is very “replaceable.” This is why she does not take breaks, and repetitiously puts out a generic by-the-numbers pop album every year. Being that she has little ‘star power,’ in order to sustain her momentum she has to continually strike while the iron is hot, while employing a multitude of petty ‘stunts’ to get attention (tacky wigs, brothel attire, referencing her tumultuous relationship Chris Brown years later.) The moment she sits down to catch her breath, ten more record label assembled chippies will be thrown into the ring and the last two standing will be the next “BEYONCE .”
In 2013, no more do we need windup doll acts like BEYONCE getting on camera and posing like an androidian cast-off from America’s Next Top Model, while vapidly bleating over an empty dance track, hanging around longer than the fifteen minutes that is typically allotted for manufactured pop stars such as her. It’s just getting sad now, and the quality is dipping. Gone are the pseudo-interesting songs like “Umbrella,” now she is peddling random, monotonous dead air like “We Found Love.” The girl has run her course; at this point she is on autopilot and is fast becoming the equivalent of a skipping record.”

Beyonce DIDN’T mime at the inauguration. BUT…
…she did sing along with a pre-recorded backing.
The video above clearly shows Beyonce singing live at President Obama’s inauguration, despite the fact that many news outlets are claiming she mimed.
You can also clearly hear the pre-recorded backing in the video, made earlier in case of technical problems. (Thanks to Daniel Holter for posting a heads-up on this video.)
But the live vocal is the one most people heard.
The evidence
You can tell by listening carefully to the two performances audible in the video above and comparing them to this live feed:
For more clues that she sang live, listen for these points:
When she starts singing, her voice is hard to hear – the microphone gain is too low. The sound-man quickly corrects this – but if we were listening to a recording this wouldn’t happen – in fact back-up recordings are used to solve exactly this kind of problem.
At 1’16? in the video above, she tilts her head slightly closer to the mic and the sound gets suddenly more bassy. This is because of an acoustic effect known as the “proximity effect”.
At 1’52? she takes out one of her earpieces. Some people are citing this as more evidence she was lip-syncing, but in fact it’s what singers do when they’re having trouble hearing the pitch of their own voice through the earpiece. By taking it out, she can hear her own voice more clearly and sing in tune more easily. (In fact, if the pre-recorded vocal was going to her earpiece, she may well have been finding it distracting.)
At 2’17? she smiles slightly, and you can hear this “smile” in her voice.
None of these clues are conclusive, but to fake all of them, plus the details of the performance itself, would make Beyonce the best lip-sync artist in the world !
And anyone who has heard her sing live knows that’s not where her true talents lie…
So why are people saying Beyonce mimed ?
Because the band did mime.
Why ? Probably because it can be next to impossible for a large group of musicians to play in tune in extremely hot or cold temperatures – and it was cold at the inauguration.
The original “reports” were confirmed by players in the band, who said that Beyonce asked for the pre-recorded backing, and that’s almost certainly true. (The band has since issued a formal statement saying that “no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded.”)
Any singer would find it seriously difficult to put on a great performance to a band that was struggling to play in tune, and for something this high-profile it’s understandable that you’d want the best chance to get it right.
But the video at the top of this post uses both audio feeds, probably by mistake, and combined with the other clues leaves me in no doubt that Beyonce sang live – and that her live performance is what most people heard.
Update:
So, it’s been 24 hours and Beyonce’s team still haven’t made any comment – meanwhile CNN are quoting an inauguration official who says she decided to use the pre-recorded version the night before.
There are several different versions of the video available, all with slightly different sound – how can this be ? Why are there two voices audible on some versions, and not on others ?
The answer is that it’s standard practise at an event like this for all the audio to be made available to broadcasters, so that each of them can do their own mix – their own blend of presenters, music and ambient crowd noise.
All of which makes it very difficult to know exactly what we’re hearing! And some people are even claiming that Beyonce’s mic wasn’t switched on at all.
Plot thickening
But here’s a clue I haven’t mentioned before – in the first WSJ clip above, you can clearly hear wind noise on the mic (and Beyonce’s scarf flapping) at 0’36?. This proves the mic was live – and that it was used in this broadcast, at least.
You can hear the same thing in other versions, for example here – and in the video on Beyonce’s blog, too, at 0’48? – even though this version has been cleaned up, with added reverb and compression, and the wind noise has been reduced.
Conclusion
My verdict ?
The mic was live
Beyonce sang
Whether she wanted it or not, the live mic sound was made available and used in many, if not all of the broadcasts
Her performance was every bit as good as the “safety” pre-record – in fact it was so close that it’s hard to tell them apart !”
We have no way of knowing exactly why Beyonce chose to use the recorded backing, or if she really wanted us to hear her live performance. But we did – and it was great.
She didn’t mime, she sang great – what’s all the fuss about ?

Who knew that four days later, people would still be arguing about whether or not Beyoncé lip synced the National Anthem at the Inauguration? Well, this is America and we love our celebrity drama.
While there are those who swear to the lip syncing, there are a growing number in the “she sang live” camp, including Mike Doughty (who I once interviewed for
Sound System), who wrote a piece for Slate explaining why he believes the anthem was sung live.
I’ve done a bunch of lip-syncing, in music videos, and it’s very easy to spot. Anyone who performs in, shoots, or edits music videos can see the tiny, observable latency endemic to lip-syncing. Beyoncé either sang live, or she’s the most gifted lip-syncer in the history of humanity.
In the end, it really doesn’t matter to anyone but Beyoncé’s reputation if she faked singing. While I would love to see her vindicated and have Mike Doughty’s points proved, in the end, no harm was done to anyone regardless of how the song was performed. The issue of the lip syncing is nothing more than entertainment distraction and it’s not a new one. It goes back a long way, back to the early days of variety shows (did you think the Beatles were singing live on those shows?) and is, whether you recognize it or not, weaved throughout our musical entertainment history, for better or worse. Here are some “great” lip syncing performances throughout the ages.
Ine of the most famous lip-syncing scandals ever, Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan – better known as Milli Vanilli – were outed as lip -syncers during a 1990 concert when their pre-recorded track started skipping. When it was revealed they didn’t even sing on their studio albums, they returned their Grammys and quickly fell from grace. Their names are now synonymous with faking it.
Ashlee Simpson was outed during a 2004 Saturday Night Live performance when her backing track played a song different from the one she was singing. She tried to play it off by awkwardly dancing around the stage, but was the laughing stock of the entertainment world for a few days.
At the 2007 BET awards, 50 Cent stumbled through his performance, missing cues and then being thrown for a loop when his music started looping instead of playing the vocals.
In 1983, Michael Jackson lip synced his way through “Billi Jean” during a Motown anniversary special on television. His performance of the song was still so great, no one seemed to care he wasn’t really singing.
In an August 2003 show at Madison Square Garden, R. Kelly put down his mic during a song and let the pre-recorded track go on singing. On purpose. The audience supposedly responded positively.
At Super Bowl XLIII, Jennifer Hudson lip-synced the National Anthem because the producer said there were too many “variables” to do the song live.
During this partially lip-synced performance on Good Morning America, Mariah Carey actually sings the words “Stop singing my part, baby” to a backup singer.
Britney Spears, a repeat offender of lip-syncing crime, made her fake vocals so obvious during an Australian concert that fans walked out.
Not only did Luciano Pavarotti lip sync ”Nessun Dorma” during the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics, but the orchestra and conductor faked it as well.
I’ll venture to say there are more instance of lip-syncing than you or I will ever know about. Makes you wonder how many performances you enjoyed that weren’t as live as you thought. And if you’re like me it also makes you wonder, “So what?”
Though I’m now firmly in Mike Doughty’s camp on whether or not Beyoncé lip-synced the National Anthem, the fact is I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. Finding out she recorded it earlier wouldn’t take away from that moment of enjoyment I had while watching it on tv.
The fact that people are complaining they were “sold a bill of goods” and given something else makes one wonder where are priorities are. Maybe if you paid for a live show and got a pre-recorded one you’d have a legitimate complaint. But a television performance of a song that was just one small part of a larger program? Let it go.
Hopefully, we’ll get a definitive statement from the Beyoncé camp on this, then we can go back to enjoying that Destiny’s Child reunion.

Can you explain me how could an album which has barely achieved any certifications worldwide have sold 11 million copies? Wikipedia has Breakaway at 12 million, Mediatraffic at 11, while DIL is at 11 according to Wiki, and 8 according to Mediatraffic? Obviously, Kelly slayed Beyonce everywhere with Breakaway and she scored more certifications and bigger sales, 3 million is a big difference honey, lets not pretend. This can easily prove that DIL has not sold 11 million copies worldwide. It was such a local album, it’s only at 6 million with final USA and UK sales, while Breakaway is at 7.8 with those two.
