It’s that time of year again!

Indeed, tonight saw the 2014 Grammy nominations unveiled as per usual of its nomination concert special weeks before the actual showing.  But, what comes with the ‘per usual’ showing are the jaw-dropping surprises, snubs, and all out “shut-outs” that accompany the annual spectacle.

Always a heated debate-starter, the coveted tally saw the likes of Christina Aguilera, Trey Songz, Janelle Monae, Chris Brown, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Brandy, Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Kelly Rowland, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, India.Arie, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga all go without mention.

For Bieber – whose manager made headlines for his rant regarding his 2013 Grammy shutout – this would be a second-go-round despite consistently clocking some of the year’s biggest hits.

Tuck in below for a list of other surprises and snubs:

My only surprise is Ciara getting no nominations, reason being Body Party was a huge RnB hit.

The other surprise is Tamar getting so many nominations. Vince is shadyyyyy, he’s going to buy Tamar a nomination and possibly a Grammy but forget to send a check for Gags….I can’t.

And not Lorde getting 4 nominations when she hasn’t been out even two years, I cannot.

The BIGGEST snub is Janelle Monae. I knew Keyshia and Brandy wouldn’t get in. Kelly Rowland was a possibility in Best Urban Contemporary Album. I thought Ciara would get into Best R&B Performance for “Body Party” since it was the biggest R&B hit but nothing else.

Ariana Grande had some good songs BUT there was wayyy too much competition in Pop with songs that were better.

J-Cole got into Best Rap/Sung for “Power Trip” his album should have been nominated over Jay-Z’s.

I see they are still pretending as if Fine China wasn’t a good song. What would make those people sitting at the Grammy panel sit up and take notice, would be for the snubbed artists to not attend. They need to be hit where it hurts the most with ratings becuause that red carpet would look tragic.

GaGa is def a surprise snub, especially since Katy didn’t get snubbed…although I still don’t see it for Katy getting her first grammy..

Poor Miley, she’s prob actually really upset, seems like she really cares about awards, and popularity, and winning.

What’s Up #RihannaNavy you got to Step up at least Rihanna got to win that Best Urban Contemporary Album that she’s nominated for. If she wins her nomination 1 over 2 it’s better than nothing or not even been nominated. The Grammy needs to explained the way they nominates these Artist.

I was happy to see nominations RnB singers like Fantasia, Chrisette, Tamar, Faith Evans, John Legend, Anthony Hamiltion, even Alicia Keys. Ciara can’t come close to any of them vocally. Maybe she could have been nominated for a video or dancing but her music is too lacking in the vocal department for me to ever consider the lack of a Ciara nomination a snub. Trying to survive in R&B with a weak voice when there are so many strong vocalists in that category is just difficult. Janet was one of the few artists who was able to have longevity in R&B with a weak voice but it doesn’t happen often that’s why Ciara is struggling. Others like K. Michelle or even Kelly or Keyshia Cole would deserve a nomination before Ciara.

Most of those snubs are surprising but quite understandable. Except for one or two artists, I don’t remember any stellar music coming from any of those who got ignored.

All those who put any credible work got nominated: Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Drake, Tamar Braxton, Bruno Mars and Pharell. Each artist deserves at least one win.

Taylor Swift might win Album of The Year again. Well deserved this time around.

I feel bad for Ariana but she’ll be back, for sure. Miley, too. Selena is a cutie but she needs to find the right register for that “voice”.

Love & War the song or album doesn’t deserve that many nominations. The album has yet to push 200K and the single #57 Hot100/#4 R&B/#5R&B/Hip-Hop.
Taylor Swift has another Album of the Year nomination based off of Popularity alone and not for the artistic value.
Kelly Rowland may be lazy but she crafted a great R&B record that should’ve been nominated.
Brandy stays getting snubbed,Ciara even deserved a nod for Body Party.

    Everything else seems about right.
K.Michelle’s music has no variation to it and doesn’t deserve a nomination, too hood for the panel’s liking so it’s not surprising. Tamar though! Their albums were both equally R&B messes!

CONGRATS TO FANTASIA! She is taking at least one Grammy home for Get It Right.

I’ve never heard of most of the nominees. Brandy should’ve gotten a nomination over Mack Wilds and R&B divas wtf. I’m shocked Janelle is nowhere to be found. Really, Grammys? Really?

WOW…. This is shocking, regardless of how ppl felt about the promo of ‘Talk a Good Game” it should of been nominated. That is a strong R&B album. Ariana most definitely should of been nominated for best new artist. J. Cole album should of been nominated over Kanye. & Janelle Monae definitely got snubbed.

Brandy deserved a couple of nominations. It’s so sad that she always get snubbed yet she has consistantly released quality albums. She is also one of the most celebrated and respected vocalists/singers (live/studio) in the industry. I realy don’t understand.

This is a joke. No wonder Drake backed out of performing on the Grammys. He claims it was because of the Tour, but told them he was going to perform in early October 2013. The only time I watch the Grammys was when Chris & Rihanna was there and I know damn well that I will not be watching. The only persons I’m happy for is J. Cole & Kendrick Lamar but I still will not be watching. Jay-Z needs to retire. I mean he will never reach billion status plus his cd & songs was not all that.

This is weird because I’m not a big fan of Rihanna but why didn’t she get nominated for “Diamonds?” That was such a big hit.

But the one I am real pissed about is J. Cole being snubbed for all major rap categories. SMFH! When is this guy going to get recognized for his great work. He deserves an award for Power Trip and Born Sinner.

I don’t think Janelle Monae got a nomination for her album because it missed the cutoff. “Q.U.E.E.N.” with Erykah Badu should have received an R&B nomination though. Ciara should’ve been nominated for “Body Party.” Brandy’s “Two Eleven” should have been nominated for Best R&B Album. Oh well…

No nomination for Brandy’s awesome “Two Eleven.”
No nomination for Janelle’s awesome “Electric Lady.”
No nomination for Dawn Richard’s brilliant “Goldenheart.”

Where is HAIM’s nomination for “Days Are Gone?”

Laura Mvula’s “Sing To The Moon” ? No.

    Alice Smith’s “She” ? No.

    “Body Party” ? No.

“Song For Zula” by Phosphorescent???!!! No.

Oh well, I’m used to it.

But they did get a few right: Lalah, Tame Impala, Fantasia, James Blake, Anthony Hamilton, Queens Of The Stone Age, Kanye, Lana Del Ray, Disclosure, Kendrick, Beyoncé and Bowie.

    - Well… I´m impressed by these grammy nominations. Of course it´s impossible to agree with everything. But hey, they had the guts to leave Rihanna and her Diamonds (probably her most critically acclaimed song) out of the 3 big categories, really surprised. Great news cos they included Bruno in those categories despite his song being as old as Rihanna´s, so they got it right in this case, talent is the important thing.

    – Also… REALLY surprised Justin Timberlake is not in any of these 3 big categories. Wow grammys went there honey lol I´m glad. The album had quality but they don´t have to award just cos of success or popularity, so yeah, good decision.

    – Now there´s this Katy girl nominated in one of those 3 categories for a very basic song, well, there´s always things like this. She won´t win anyway.

    – Taylor Swift doesn´t deserve any award in general, she´s too basic. Hope they don´t give it to her, those would be 2 Album of the Year in her career, and I doubt any real legend has more than one.

    – The big surprise and disappointemnt is Janelle Monae´s album not having any important nomination. Like that´s the best album of the year and she´s so obviously talented. Something weird, they probably don´t like her for some reason.

    – Also surprising Ariana Grande didn´t get nominated for Best new Artist. So on point, she doesn´t deserve it at all. The music is basic as hell, and her vocals, despite being good, are too inspired by you know who. I´ve always said it, she won´t last. Better ones tried it but faded after a couple of years.

    – So on point trash like Milye didn´t make it either.

    – Finally, TGJ is hilarious, in what f****** world would any respectable journalist/blogger think Mariah Carey or Applause were going to be nominated? they only had one song out this year, give me a break.

I really can´t understand some people! Who the hell thought Lotus was going to be nominated????? And Kelly Rowland, Brandy, etc stans… your girls may be good, but when people like Janelle Monae, who is on that other superior level artistically, don´t get nominations, you can´t be serious asking your faves to be…
Also, can´t people read? Alicia Keys has nominations (good thing).
And the very few people saying Beiber, Nicki, Milye should be nominated… well, you´ll grow up, hopefully.

@JOHNVIDAL you’re absolutely right. Nominations per category are quite limited. Impossible to please everyone.

    However, look at this:

    16. BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC ALBUM

The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You
    Neko Case

    Hesitation Marks
    Nine Inch Nails

    Trouble Will Find Me
    The National

    Lonerism
    Tame Impala

    Modern Vampires Of The City
    Vampire Weekend

This is a flaw-free category. Every album is stellar. It’s categories like these that make the Grammys wonderful. I wished the rest of the categories rose to this level. However, they feel way short.

    1. Brandy- Two Eleven
    2. Dawn Richard- Goldenheart
    3. Janelle Monae- Electric Lady
    4. Fantasia- Side Effects Of You
    5. Laura Mvula- Sing To The Moon

This is just one example. Stack each category with awesome work and pick the best. Music is so subjective though. It’s tough. Plus, I know that sales & popularity are a factor in Grammy nominations too (helps to attract viewers) so that has to be considered. The Grammys are not the same as The Mercury Prize. I have to keep reminding myself of this. LOL!

Overall, I’m happy with the nominations.

ARIANA GRANDE deserves something. SHE CAN SANG HER FACE OFF LIVE! She should’ve got nominated under POP for something.

Brandy should have gotten some kind of nod especially since “R&B DIVAS” is nominated for album of the year. uhhhh that album was garbage except for a couple songs (Cough *Faith Evans songs* and a couple *belly price songs* were good, rest GARBAGE.) They got R&B nominees NONE of US HAVE EVER HEARD OF or KNOW…SMDH

I don’t listen to Gaga so I dunno but I honestly feel like Janelle Monae, Brandy and Ariana Grande deserved nominations since their music sells well and they can actually sing LIVE. I don’t care how good you are in a studio, show me your vocals LIVE.

I agree with skyfall. Ariana should switch it up every now and then, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t deserve a Grammy!! She worked her but off trying to get Yours Truly to number one which it was. She should have DEFINATELY been nominated for best new artist. I don’t even some of those people! I’m so pisssed off with the grammy’s because they failed to put alot of the popular songs in the mix. Wrecking ball, best song ever, and applause DEFINATELY should have gotten nominated as well. They DEFINATELY failed to mention key artist. Ciara and Nicki should have gotten best collab. There are so many other artist as well. I’m SOO done with the Grammy’s
