Rihanna’s ‘ANTI’ Album

It’s imperative to first point out that Rihanna is a great Pop star. She’s stunning, compelling, and boasts a hit catalogue that keeps her competitors awake at night.
Rihanna, however, is not an artist. At least not the type she’s been moonlighting as since this ‘ANTI’ mess began to play out. And sadly for her, on this occasion no amount of smoke and mirrors will be able to wholly distract from that. Critics have been lashing the release since its staccato roll-out and the feedback from those beyond her fanbase has been lukewarm at best.
There are entirely too many missteps to recount, but the most glaring is the reality that Rih and her team lost sight of what makes her “work.”
We’ve ragged about her McMusic and messy antics, but in hindsight it worked…for her. Indeed, as momentary as many of her smashes have been, she’s managed to enjoy a decade and some change in the spotlight – with 13 #1’s to her name. Even though I was rarely roused, clearly something was right.
As such, I knew there was trouble ahead the moment she declared she was deviating from her formula and aiming to make a “timeless” album (a statement that is problematic in itself). Dropping ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ immediately after essentially rendered ‘ANTI’ lifeless on arrival.
The umbrella issue here is that Rihanna is reaching for a narrative that just is not hers. She isn’t a Beyonce or Adele, two of her contemporaries who are clearly taking a more classic approach to stardom. No. For me, she’s a post-modern Madonna. An enduring name, yet one that has sustained for so long by shamelessly and successfully riding trends, shocking the masses, and evolving along the way.
It’s crucial to highlight here that when Madge made “statement” records ala
‘Erotica,”Bedtime Stories,’ and ‘Ray of Light,’ she committed to the cause – visually and sonically – and didn’t precede their releases with promises. She just delivered. ‘ANTI,’ on the other hand, feels made up along the way and doesn’t appear to have ever had a clear concept. Hence the end result sounds like confused contrived clutter.
I fully expect her team to work overtime to “Olivia Pope” the situation. Eloquent press releases touting questionable successes, purchased Platinum plaques, supercharged single roll-outs (‘Kiss It Better’ please) and a whole lot more. Sadly though, for many this has already joined the likes of ‘Glitter’ and ‘Born This Way’ on the 00s list of Pop tragedies. Where exactly it places on said tally hinges on how good a job Pope & Associates do of cleaning things up.
On the upside, the best thing about ‘R8’ is that it means we’re one step closer to ‘R9.’

This is a difficult one.
On one hand I’m incredibly impressed by the risks Rihanna has taken with this project and commend her for taking as much time as she needed to complete it.
Yet on the other, I’m concerned that her decision to partner with Samsung to -dare I say- cheat her way to Platinum is going to cost her…dearly.
For, the fact remains that one million people did not purchase the album within the first 24 hours of its release and this- if Lady Gaga‘s ‘Born This Way‘ fiasco is anything to go by- only makes the gifted entertainer appear desperate and sales-thirsty when placed next to artists who move major numbers sans trickery.
I hope the album does eventually go on to sell 1 million “real” units because a great deal of effort has gone into completing it.
However, I’d be lying if I said I was disappointed that Rihanna didn’t believe in her own music enough to allow it do the selling for her.

It seems clear to me that there is a “something” (a person, a team, a component) that is missing from this campaign, as Rihanna’s career post-‘Music of the Sun’ has seemingly been completely devoid of misstep. So, to have such a messy “start, stop, start, stop” situation with ‘ANTI’ speaks to a piece of her “tried and true” formula being tampered with.
Be that as it may, while I won’t ignore the glaring pitfalls of the campaign, I’m still here for ‘ANTI.’ While on the front-end the steps taken (i.e. making the album available for free, choosing ‘Work’ as the first single) seem random, to me they simply fit the overall theme of being… ‘ANTI.’ The whole point of the era is to go against the grain of what’s expected from her artistically and commercially. If, in fact, the album does not perform as well as she’d hoped, I’m sure everyone involved in the campaign knows a) Rihanna has never been an album seller, b) after 10 years in the game it’s ok to have a flop, and c) her relevance has not diminished. As such, it won’t be hard to bounce back.
That’s the thing about risks – sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don’t (see: Madonna’s ‘Erotica,’ Beyonce’s ‘4,’ Lady Gaga’s ‘ARTPOP,’ Xtina’s ‘Back to Basics,’ and the like. It’s ok to take risks and step away from what people know and/or expect. But, regardless of how the album performs commercially, I think Rih should be proud of the body of work she’s put forth. It’s definitely a grower, but it’s also mature, timely, and proof that she’s far from a microwave artist.

Navy rejoice! Your commander has finally released ‘ANTI’. Finally.
It’s been a long time coming – a really long time – but 12 months after launching its official first single, the LP marched its way digital world this week, as did its new-first single, ‘Work.’
Though said single is already flying up the charts the globe over, something doesn’t feel right about the whole campaign. And hasn’t for some time.
To start, it’s hard to digest why the track wasn’t accompanied by a video. Indeed with VEVO being so influential these days in terms of chart rankings as well as music videos being one of the biggest tools in her arsenal, it’s difficult to decipher why an Island-spiced visual has yet to be serviced.
More broadly, the only way the “ANTI” title seems to make any sense is that it’s “ANTI-Rihanna.” Rih’s power ultimately lies in her ability is to churn out hit-sounding/made-for-radio singles and well it doesn’t seem to be the case at all with this record. Though songs such as ‘Kiss It Better’ and ‘Close To You’ could make great singles, the LP isn’t as exciting nor enticing as previous releases. What’s more, the material doesn’t even feel edgy, left field or even experimental, just bare and uninspired for the most part.
Having said that, we are still talking about the Hot 100 Queen so it wouldn’t be a surprise if one of the jams from the album caught on with radio and iTunes in a near future. ‘Kiss’ makes a great candidate – especially if re-packaged as a duet with The Weeknd (which would be genius given the tour tie-in).

Tha hell with ya opinion, the album is fab. I love it. People gotta give it a proper listen (lyrics, production, and overall message) at first I wasn’t for certain. But giving her a doubt and played the whole thing I really enjoyed it.

Like I said before. The album is Ok. Quite forgettable and nothing timeless. I can give her credit on the fact that it’s her first album that sounds like an actual body of work, not a bunch of singles thrown together. With that said, it sounds like a lot of album fillers and typical PBR&B sound that is hot right now. Not authentic . Which is all Rihanna does. Hop on bandwagon.

I’m confused. This album is awesome. TGJ, I praise y’all for being on time with post and giving quality reviews but this right here… I unsure as to why/how y’all don’t see the quality in this music. I’m not stand but I and drawn in for this album. I really think this is her best work. Of course I wanted more dance tracks but once I got over that disappointment I realized this chick just killed it. Her music is definitely edgy. Like, how could Sam say it’s not?! I keep hearing more about the album roll out rather than the actual content itself. Sure the campaign was messy, but this is the first album where she stepped out on her own which I love as a black woman. Therefore, it should be expected to see some hiccups. Now since no one really gave a review of the music, here’s mine. First and foremost, I am elated that Rihanna took the time to deliver a work of art that was unexpected. She presented a side to the world that us fans have seen since Rated R. Also, she made a project solely for herself. She didn’t make it for radio, the charts, other fanbases, or anyone else. This album is a testament to saying that she doesn’t want to be compared to anyone; she doesn’t want to be in the same lane with Madonna, T Swift or Katy nor Beyonce. She wants to be remembered as an artist who also happened to do pop music. Now, I must add that while I this record is growing on me, there is still something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on. I just hope that she makes “Love On the Brain” and official single, because the world needs to hear that record. Furthermore, I’d like to see what she does visually. I think it would give the general public a better insight of her vision with this project. Due to trying something different and a strong vocal performance, I’d give it a solid 7 out of 10.

I think what anti needed is some type of “pour it up” or “cockiness(love it)” type of vibe. the album had no peak which most of her albums tend to have. RR had rude boy LOUD had S&M and Only Girl Talk That Talk had We found love etc. etc. BUT what i will say is that this is the first rihanna album that i can play ALL the way through so i dont know what to think. like theres no standout “peak” in the album but for some reason i cant help but to listen from top to bottom. idk.
You’re exactly right! There’s something missing. There isn’t a peak or universal iconic song that simply makes the album. However, it’s a piece of work that I can’t stop listening to. It has this Aaliyah vibe from Yeah I Said It to Same Ol Mistakes. Her voice on Love On The Brain has me in love.
this is the first album that rihanna had complete control over, she wasnt under any pressure to deliver hits and this is the music she made. How is this not her? Listen to the lyrics and tell me they dont tell her story or her thoughts. Go through her old albums and tell me you cant find one or two songs on each that would fit perfectly more or less on anti. This for better or worse is the type of music i think rihanna truly enjoys making.

The only reason why this album is even STANDOUT for rih is because of the whole “smartest-kid-in-special-ed” syndrone. Her other albums are either generic just ok or just good so its easy to top that after 3 years. But WHERE are the GARGANTUAN sales & critical acclaim to back it up??? 70 critic score is good but far cry from the 85 bey got.

The last 5 songs took me on a trip, not a lot of music does that to man, album wise. I felt the beats in the first half, so for me, this is a 9/10. This reminds me of Rated R era, people wanted dance songs, but R was great. You guys will get your dance tracks on the next album, just like with Loud.

This isn’t word peace or world poverty, its a Rihanna album…
That being said. I think the problem is consistency throughout so it doesn’t seem like a complete body of work and more like tracks put together from (at least) three ideas of an album. Kiss it better is one hell of a track that was previewed on instagram a while ago and doesn’t disappoint in full. Same old mistake is also a favourite but seems an odd song choice to cover considering that the original only cam out last year. Work is a typical Rihanna track that would’ve faired better if it featured Mr Vegas or Beenie Man but i think was more of a last minute thought to push the project (much like Tweet did with first singles that didn’t represent the album) the rest is okay but i’m still listening.
ANTI is still #1 on the ITunes albums chart in both the U.S and the U.K and has been for the past 36+ hours.

The album is decent. I dont see this era having any longevity though because she can only sell commercial stuff. Shame the rollout is distracting from the music, unlike Beyonces surpise release, it’s for all the wrong reasons And it’s all Rihannas teams fault. The whole era just seems like a Contrdiction.
I loved every song on ANTI. From Consideration on how Rihanna and SZA’s melodies just blended together all so beautifully and going to that “getting on peace” line, and all the way to Sēx with Me. It was an absolute home run from me. After listening to ANTI, I even didn’t care for Pop bops.
Rihanna gets a solid 9/10.

It’s crazy how people are so focused on the “roll out” and not the music itself. Anti is Rihanna’s best work since rated R. This is the music that she wanted to do! That’s the problem; we have too many A&R’s and not enough consumers! Just enjoy the music.
cannot wait for the push after the grammys. I hope that even with the tour that she will promote the album and ride it into next year. Kiss it better and love on the brain could push the album with proper videos and promo

Oh Rihanna, it was so worth the wait…. This album shows Rihanna hitting back at anyone who ever said her voice could only do certain things and showing them she can do anything she wants to. Such attitude; no apologies.
With its sense of unease, quiet, and longing, much of Anti is unlikely to grab ears on first listen or play well to Rihanna’s broadest base of fans. But it is an interesting artistic curveball in her heretofore hits-driven career.
This, for better or worse, is clearly the music Rihanna likes: leftfield, stoned and strange. It is Rihanna without hits. This strange album, released without warning over the internet for free, may well be a reflection of the fact that not even her own backers really expects this to be a commercial blockbuster. It is more an exercise in rebranding, transforming the hit girl into a serious artist.
It’s hard to work out from its contents whether in a few albums’ time its author will be back to churning out neon-hued anthems or embedded even deeper into the musical leftfield, because its contents are neither the kind of unqualified success that confidently maps out a future direction or the kind of unmitigated disaster that requires her to beat a hasty retreat.
Sadly, with Anti the intent and promise is more admirable than the end result. There’s a certain dreary joylessness to it that saps any energy the songs might possess.

Just finished listening to ANTI. Love on the Brain” and “Higher” are exceptional. There are 3 other cute tracks (jamesjoint kiss better & yeah i said it) but that it just CUTE nothing special. After listening to higOTB (the best by far) i thot it wuld be her best album but its her worse since TTT. the rest of the album might as well be CHRIS BROWN OR TINASHE or even CERROR. This wont even outsell PISSPRINT (ww yes but not) in the States.
