Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 1999 #TBT

Published: Thursday 16th Feb 2017 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week in 1999 Monica soared to the top of the Hot 100 with her hit ‘Angel of Mine.’  Lifted from ‘The Boy Is Mine‘ LP (read our ode to the album by clicking here), the angelic remake of British girl group Eternal‘s song of the same name dethroned pop princess Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time’ from the tally’s perch.

Becoming Mo’s third consecutive chart-topper (as the follow-up to ‘The Boy is Mine‘ the song and ‘The First Night’), the trio of chart triumphs came as the last time Mo saw her name atop the Hot 100.  Join us below as we salute the impressive run and see who else joined her in the top 25 this week 18 years ago:

Oh lord, I loved ★NSYNC’s (God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time On You. Oh I miss those times 😊

    • JOHNVIDAL February 16, 2017

Have you seen SOME Beyonce fans being crazy once again and exaggerating every single word about her that is not ass kissing? I cannot believe they truly beleive Beyonce is the biggest thing and most talented thing in music and that THERE IS NO MORE TO IT, as if it were obvious or something. They ask for respect they have none for amazing artists that topped her in whatever field or the case is (unless they very disrespectfully do some ass kissing sessions to her too, like Adele did). Now they are acting like Santana is nothing in music. It´s crazy. They don´t want anyone else to win. To some extent you could see it after Gaga´s Superbowl success too.

      • Suicide Blonde February 16, 2017

It’s embarrassing, sometimes I feel bad for them, undoubtedly, the most pathetic fan base in music history, if only they put the same effort they put when attacking everyone who doesn’t worship their idol, into making one of Beyoncé’s albums a big seller like Thriller, their behavior would probably be more understandable.

      • Kate February 16, 2017

Santana is trash. Rihanna and beyonce are better than both him and adele i don’t even know what beyonce has to do with this

      • JOHNVIDAL February 16, 2017

I agree. It´s not like anybody is saying she isn´t great or has not talent. They just need to get over the fact she is not going to be the best for everybody out there. There are soooo many talents to choose from.

      • Coolnesss February 16, 2017

And what does this have to do with the post at least hand? You people always talk about Bey’s fans but it seems like her detractors can’t keep her name out of their mouths. Idgaf if Carlos sold a billion albums, if you put out trash opinions, expect strong pushback from others. It’s well documented that Adele’s range is limited and she has shaky breath control. So much so that she had to restart her performance on LIVE television. I can’t imagine the sort of backlash Beyoncé would’ve gotten if she pulled something like that. But I’ll let y’all tell it; Beyoncé’s fans should just let people discredit and disrespect her when she doesn’t do s*** to anyone. Adele obviously loves Bey and that annoys you so you pass ot off as ‘ass kissing”. Go Stan for your favs from yesteryear and quit trying to pass of you being incredibly condescending as fake concern.

SN: I find it hilarious that you’d side with TGJ’s resident racist all in the name of bashing Beyoncé. Simply hilarious 😊.

      • JOHNVIDAL February 16, 2017

        Coolness
I did it here because I found Suicide and I know that I can talk to him about that. We both are long time visitors in this blog, when it wasn´t so much about Beyonce and Rihanna and nothing else, and know we can really talk about music between us. If you don´t want to be part of such conversation just don´ty reply and that´s it. Start being more respectful cause I swear some Beyonce fans don´t even realize when they are being such thing. None of them have still answered to em how is it so terrible what Santana said and so disrespectful while none of them have noticed the fact that what Adele said at the grammys about Beyonce was absolutely disrespectful to the other nominees and whatever artistry they have. Of course you didn´te ven think about that, because it benefitted Beyonce. However, Santana´s words don´t benefit Beyonce, so you have a problem. Please be more unbiased. Oh and don´t give me the Adele example cause I´ve said a trillion times she is usually disappointing at big events. I don´t follow Beyonce like that so i don´t know if she sang live at teh grammys this time. I remember watching her performance of XO in British tv, it was live and it was shaky as hell. See? Nobody is perfect. And she definitely is not above everybody else just cause her fans say so. In fact that a joke of a way of thinking. I defend her when I have too, especially against attacks from Rihanna fans (I mean come on lol). I´m not a stupid hater, like most of you stans. Don´t approach me like I am one. Just no. I´m here for music, talent and REALITY 🙂

      • SMH February 16, 2017

@JohnVidal totally agree. Beyonce fans are the absolute most immature and pathetic fanbase of all time. Even Lady Gaga’s fanbase, who used to be equally repulsive, have grown up and matured faster than those disgusting fools. That’s why Carlos Santana pissed me off; he should have NE-VER apologized to some b*tch who has more grammys than him and expects folks to feel sorry for her because she lost one. Those white country stars never apologize when they drag her, he shouldn’t have either.

      • RoyalKev February 16, 2017

        Well said Coolness!

      • King B February 17, 2017

LOL. Says someone who exagerrates everything Gaga does. Has Artpop outsold 4? Has Joanne outsold Lem’s first week sales?

      • JOHNVIDAL February 17, 2017

King B Stop it. Really stop it. I acknowledge Gaga´s big talents. So what? I don´t disrespect all the other talented artists to do that. I defend Beyonce a lot of times despite not even being into her to begin with. You´re mad at the fact I´m unbiased and I´m calmly calling all of you out for the foolery that is taking place regarding Beyonce 🙂

  2. Gee February 16, 2017

The difference between the charts in 1999 and the charts in 2017 is diversity.

    • Chileplease (the first and only bih) February 16, 2017

Right. Everybody had an equal chance back then. Definitely not the case these days.

  3. Casual February 16, 2017

Hard to believe these songs were out 18 years ago.

  4. BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 February 16, 2017

    Whitney Houston “Heart Break Hotel”
    Brandy “Have You Ever”
Nysnc, Britney (back when she was relevant).

    Good times 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

  5. JOHNVIDAL February 16, 2017

LOL omg Yas! See? This is what I was talking about the other day in the last Retro Rewind. The early 00s were already not that good anymore. The 90s had all this quality and especially diversity. I love seeing these lists with Jewel there. That girl made some amazing beautiful music. Although there were already a few signs here with all the bubble gum pop groups, but that didn´t last long. The 00s were way worst.

  6. Cough Cough February 16, 2017

What a great time to be a young preteen. Slayful music was SO ABUNDANT and there were so many great songs by unique talents around. Hopefully one day popular music will take a turn for the good and acknowledge real talent again.

  7. Dev February 16, 2017

Although i liked Monica’s Angel of mine i preferred the Eternal version, its a must to listen to

  8. Kate February 16, 2017

Rihanna is now the reigning queen it’s amazing how Monica and brandy

    • Cough Cough February 16, 2017

Brandy and Monica could sing though, their talent backed and cosigned up their popularity. Riri is popular though, for sure.

  9. Kate February 16, 2017

it’s amazing how brandy and Monica fell off bcoz they were on top

    • FAF February 16, 2017

Um everyone declines sis it’s called generation

  10. Queen CI February 16, 2017

This was during a time when Beyonce had to use Kelly and them because the world and the music industry were not checking for her as a solo artist.

    • We are the grandchildren of the slaves you couldn’t kill ~ tyler February 16, 2017

Is the world checking for ciara as a solo artist tho ?

    • Cough Cough February 16, 2017

Beyoncé was in a group with her friends because she’d always been in a group with her friends. The girls on here really need a text book for basic shade because Y’all come with the most tired reads

  11. Black power February 16, 2017

Wow I didn’t know Monica has got more #1s to her name than Brandy. I always thought Brandy was more successful on a mainstream level.. but Mo beeennnn putting in work.

    • Chase February 16, 2017

Yeah Monica was more successful on the mainstream level. Someone posted below that she even ranked higher than Brandy on billboards top Rnb artist.

    • RCW February 17, 2017

Monica killed her on the charts and single sales

  12. Kim.Kesha&Pam February 16, 2017

Monica spoke more #1 singles than Brandy. Monica is the only 1 to have a #1 album out of the 2. Monica has had the most recent certification out of the 2. People try to shade Mo, but what’s understood ain’t gotta be explained.

  13. Kim.Kesha&Pam February 16, 2017

Monica has more #1 singles than Brandy. Monica is the only 1 to have a #1 album out of the 2. Monica has had the most recent certification out of the 2. People try to shade Mo, but what’s understood ain’t gotta be explained.

    • Cough Cough February 16, 2017

Brandy’s sold more, had much more commercial success and height overall in the industry, much more regarded vocally, much more influential, more versatile (Broadway, tv, modeling) and just better. She’s always been better

      • Kim.Kesha&Pam February 16, 2017

The only album that out performed MO’s is NEVER SAY NEVER. The rest of them, they were both selling Roy d the same. Then come early 2000s & Mo became the more successful.

      • RoyalKev February 16, 2017

I really hate the comparisons, but even more than that, I hate when people are misinformed! I know the Brandy hate on this blog is real, but Monica didn’t outsell Brandy until 2010 (not the early 2000s)! Bran’s first 5 albums actually outperformed Monica’s!

        Brandy (Brandy/1994) > Monica (Miss Thang/1995)
        Brandy (NSN) > Monica (TBIM)
Brandy (Full Moon/2002) > Monica (After the Storm/2003)
Brandy (Afrodisiac/2004) > Monica (The Makings of Me/2006)

        ______________

Monica (Still Standing) > Brandy (Human/2008)

        ______________

        Brandy (Two Eleven/2012) = Monica (New Life/2012)
*It’s practically as equal as two albums can get, but Monica’s album did edge it TwoEleven (selling 5 – 10K more copies).

        ______________

        Monica does have 3 (#1) Hot 100’s to Brandy’s 2!
Monica also have 8 top 10 singles to Brandy’s 7!

      • RCW February 17, 2017

That’s not what Billboard says 🤣😂🤣😂

    • LSU February 16, 2017

True. And Monica has set a couple of records as well, “while Brandy hasn’t” being the youngest to have 2 #1’s back to back, also being the only artist to have a #1 in 3 decades 90’s, 2000’s, and 2010′. She was #23 on the top 50 R&B artist of the last 25 yrs, while Brandy was ranked at 45.

To put it quiet frankly, Brandy’s show is what gave her the advantage over Monica, because without it, as you can see, Monica’s music career stands above Brandy’s.

      • Cough Cough February 16, 2017

Her show, her candies campaign, cover girl campaign, movies, Barbie doll and just all around legacy has kilt Monica’s. you don’t see any too vocalists standing Monica, you literally have 30minute videos of top vocalists praising brandy and how she’s the best from fantasia to tank to Brian McKnight to jazmin Sullivan to Toni Braxton. And Brandy’s gotten better vocally, Monica’s verbratoo is goat like. No no and NO

      • RoyalKev February 16, 2017

Brandy’s success came before the shows, so how on earth did that give her an advantage? If anything, her popularity at the time is what drove the shows success. Ya’ll love to harp on these things, but the comment I was address was regarding was the one above that stated that Bran only outperformed Monica with one album. It’s great that you want to bring up Monica being the youngest to break the records she did, but what is the debate we’re having here? I’m not doing the Brandy vs Monica thing, I am so boredT with it! They both had their time as young, R&B divas that inspired artists that followed behind them. We can be here all day, breaking down what they have over the other! Not in 2017!

      • LSU February 16, 2017

You girls can stay upset. I’m not hear to argue with Brandy fans, who should be more concerned with Norwood’s mental health.

        Goodnight dolls ✌

      • RoyalKev February 16, 2017

LOL. We’re upset, but we didn’t initiate anything! Contort and twist this whichever way you want, but all we did was clear up information that was inaccurate! Ya’ll rewrite a lot of history on this blog, so it was just something to put out there. It’s nothing to be mad about. Brandy sales were bigger, Monica snagged the #1 album and had more hits! Simple as that…

        http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/267202/ask-billboard-how-popular-is-country-music
Just Scroll down (it’s from 2009).

      • LSU February 16, 2017

Of course you’re upset “The reason why you went looking for that article” and that facade like laugh, won’t mask that lol.

We all know Brandy sold more, but over all, Monica’s music career was more successful. Hence as to why Billboard placed Monica a good 22 spots above Brandy, and that’s a fact, not an opinion.

      • RoyalKev February 16, 2017

Well apparently someone didn’t seem to know that because it’s stated above that Bran and Mo’s sales were similar (with the exception of one album) and the impression was given that Monica started to best her in the 00’s! I’m well aware of Monica’s highlights and that’s why I listed some (just to not give off shade)! We’re not putting Monica down, it just seems like you guys feel compelled to degrade Brandy to praise her! It’s the same tired shots fired every time something is posted about them! For the record, I’m not upset, this got very old fast for me! I’ve given Monica her due credit and that has nothing to do with defending Brandy from people taking constant digs at her!

  14. B**** pleeeaaasseeeee February 16, 2017

Every single from That Monica album went straight to number #1 and they were 3 of them. Monica was huge but wasn’t so much into it as she should maybe due to some personal issues I don’t know 👍🏽👊🏼

  15. Danzou February 16, 2017

Be honest, who sings betteer, beyonce, brandy, or monica?

    • Cough Cough February 16, 2017

Definitely Brandy first then Beyoncé and then Monica. I don’t like Monica’s voice anymore tho it’s way too goat like. When she was younger though she was good!

    • LSU February 16, 2017

I would say Monica and Beyonce..Brandy sounds like a chipmunk to me, I absolutely hate her voice.

    • Chase February 16, 2017

Beyonce, Monica, Brandy. In that order.

  16. DangerousWoman February 16, 2017

She went from the top of the charts to promoting flat tummy tea on IG. #PoorDat

    • Cough Cough February 16, 2017

And Monica is still putting out albums and still worth multi millions. There’s absolutely no shade in that because she’s doing more than you.

    • Chase February 16, 2017

weak shade, because Monica stays booking shows “Check her Instagram” has an Apparel line, acts when she feels “Just recently had a part on Lee Daniel’s Star”, and is being an amazing Mom to her 3 beautiful kids, along with being a loving wife. It’s clear she’s the happiest she’s ever been.

  17. VOTERS SAW THROUGH THE PROPAGANDA February 16, 2017

Great songs, Adele is keeping the tradition and making it all about the music, just like Jewel, Sarah, Monica, Brandy.
And of course Whitney the voice.

  18. Drakonce February 16, 2017

Black women ran the charts then, and now it seems like only male R&b artist go number 1

  19. LSU February 16, 2017

So pretty, I love Monica. She along with Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kelly R, Latoya L, and Ciara are such R&B beauty’s, so stunning.

  20. MUSICHEAD February 16, 2017

Monica’s attitude is really what held her back from being a mainstream international star. She had good music and good looks. She just refused to get out them streets. From 2001-2006 Monica was in the clubs heavy, fighting drinking and smoking. Glad she turned her life around.

    • Bug A Boo February 16, 2017

Even if monica didnt have a attitude problem she still wouldnt have been a international star she just didnt have cross over appeal she was too urban/ too hood

      • Mimi February 16, 2017

Girl they had Monica on the cover of Teen magazine along with Britney and Justin, and that magazine was HUGE, along with others. Miss Thang had that crossover appeal for sure.

      • Bug A Boo February 16, 2017

Mimi shut the fück up sisqo ,jarule nelly and even eve all graced teen people so what is your point?? Monica still and will always be local and she was the keyshia cole of the 90’s

      • Mimi February 16, 2017

😁 Oh girl, why the profanity? You need a hug? Is life that hard on you boo? Whatever you’re going through girl, the tough times don’t last. Hang in there 😚

  21. Bug A Boo February 16, 2017

1999 was the last year brandy and monica was relevent lol

    • Mimi February 16, 2017

Monica’s success after that says otherwise. A couple of #1’s, album certifications, and Grammy nominations says hello.

  22. Mimi February 16, 2017

Yes Monica! The charts were amazing back then 😍 Such quality music.

  23. Mark111 /.\ February 16, 2017

And this proves my point. Brandy and Mo were teen pop stars, but Brit nd Xtina took their mainstream audienceThis was the hatch of Disney/teen pop and Mo and Brandy still haven’t recovered. On a R&B standpoint, Mo is way more succesful.

  24. Brandy keeps some TGJ posters mad which is why they down vote any positive comment about her February 17, 2017

I see the glocks are using Brandy to make monica relevant. Now do that off the internet, off this blog. We don’t think about her. It’s clear Brandy stays on y’all minds and is still a threat to your girl. #truth

    • Bey/Rih February 17, 2017

LOL 😂😭 Boy bye. Nobody talks about Brandy else where besides TGJ. Come on, Schizophrenic, bitter and lonely Brandy hasn’t been relevant since 98. Call us when she gets a certification this decade. Until then, enjoy her subway concert 😂

Brandy sings on subway, and gets ignored
      https://youtu.be/4C0HJjNzZi4

  25. Ajm265 February 17, 2017

Some of your are so child and stupid. Anyways I loved this Monica the timing , look and music was so right. Clive was in her career hard and was molding her to be the new Whitney but she didn’t want that at all. Her being herself is what has kept her out of a lot of BS over the years and still keeps her booked.

  26. B**** pleeeaaasseeeee February 17, 2017

Brandy hate in this blog is so rea though. Damnnnn given her a break cuz we’re all fan of both superstars i.e. Brandy and Monica 👊🏼😂

  27. Now at youfr best game way tuesidnz February 17, 2017

Bet music back then was great and Monica did her thing back in the 1997-98

  28. Now at youfr best game way tuesidnz February 17, 2017
