missy elliot Missy Elliott To Kick Off New Season of VH1s Behind The Music

The Emmy Award winning series, Behind The Music, is celebrating it’s 14th Anniversary this August. To commemorate the milestone, VH1 is unleashing a new set of documentaries this summer, featuring some of music’s biggest stars.

From The Vault: Tweet – ‘Oops (Oh My) (Ft. Missy Elliott)’

This week’s From The Vault selection comes from Tweet and is probably 1 of the most memorable songs of the early 2000s. ‘Oops (Oh My)’ featured the singer’s mentor, Missy Elliott, and was produced by former hitmaker Timbaland.

The controversial yet infectious track managed to peak at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Official UK Singles Chart, much to the dismay of several conservative listeners. To date, Tweet has been unable to match the song’s success in either territory.

‘Oops…’ is a song that encourages people to sing along and just let loose! However, what was probably most noteworthy about this clip was Tweet’s ability to embrace her “buttery brown” skin, therefore defying the ‘light is right’ standards of beauty which plague women of colour to this day. I looked over to the left…

From The Vault: Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim & Mya – ‘Lady Marmalade’

This week’s From The Vault feature comes from Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim and Mya. On March 27, 2001, the group released a cover of the Labelle classic ‘Lady Marmalade’ for the film ‘Moulin Rouge!’. Produced by Missy Elliott, the song was a monster hit, climbing to #1 in almost every major territory in the world including the US where it won a Grammy Award for ‘Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals’.

Vivacious and powerful, this record was enjoyably inescapable when it was released. All 4 women delivered on their parts and brought something distinctly unique to the table.

The thought of any such collaboration occurring amongst today’s younger crop of singers, however, is almost frightful. Can you imagine Rihanna, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj doing something like this? With the exception of Minaj’s contribution, the song would amount to nothing less than blaspheme.

From The Vault: Lil Kim, Left Eye, Angie Martinez, Da Brat & Missy Elliott – ‘Ladies Night’

This week’s classic From The Vault video is Lil’ Kim et al’s 1997 remake of ‘Ladies Night’. Lifted from the movie soundtrack to  ‘Nothing to Lose’, the Missy Elliott produced cut and its accompanying video remain etched history as one of the most potent displays of female Hip-Hop unity we’ve seen to date. What’s more, their take on the already classic number packed such a punch that it still goes hard to date. Ladies, we salute you..

New Song: Missy Elliot – ‘Put It On Ya (ft. Teyana Taylor)’

missy elliott horsie thumb 473x464 New Song: Missy Elliot Put It On Ya (ft. Teyana Taylor)

Hip-Hip innovator Missy Elliot has been hard at work on her upcoming album ‘Block Party’ for quite some time and one of the tracks from the project has surfaced. Produced by The Neptunes, ‘Put It On Ya’ features Chris Brown’s close friend and defender, Teyana Taylor.

Missy always stands out from everybody else on the radio and this song is a testament to that. Although far too long to even be considered as a single (a possible album filler perhaps?), the track is high energy from beginning to end. My main concern is that if this comes on in the club, I’m gonna have to be fully hydrated before I hit the dance floor because this is going to work me over. I’m certainly eager to hear Missy’s album and the longer it takes, the more impatient I get!

Hit Or Miss?

From The Vault: Missy Elliott – ‘All In My Grill’

This week’s classic From The Vault video is Missy Elliott’s 1999 smash ‘All In My Grill’, which features her former protegee Nicole Wray. For all of Missy’s hits, this has remained a constant favourite of mine. Check it out:

Awesome song, great video! It’s hard to grasp that this was 10 years ago. Harder to grasp, however, is the fact that this visually looks a lot better than many of today’s videos. This recession really is a b*tch LOL.

Brandy Performs ‘Right Here (Departed)’ On TRL

R&B songstress Brandy performed her current single ‘Right Here (Departed)’ on MTV’s TRL just a few moments ago. Put simply, Ms. Norwood nailed it! The stage presence, the adlibs, the everything! She really sounded on-point – the vocals were awesome. Her LP ‘Human’ drops December 9th via Epic/Koch.

Randomness: This definitely redeems her last live showing of the track a few days ago at the Monsterjam concert.

What do you think of the performance?

Kanye West – ‘Love Lockdown’ Video

The video for Kanye West’s much talked about new single ‘Love Lockdown’ premiered, interestingly enough, on Ellen yesterday. Apparently artists/labels are looking to diversify into different lanes to promote their projects. Anyway, enough of my waffle…

Like the song, the video is certainly out there. ‘Out there’, in the good way, that is. I’m really liking what Kanye is serving up with this new album ’808s & Heartbreak’ thus far, which has me definitely anticipating the LP’s release on November 25th.

What do you think of the video?
