US Label Want Estelle to ‘Fix’ Teeth?

US Label Want Estelle to 'Fix' Teeth? According to reports, R&B star Estelle is receiving pressure from her US label to make changes to her appearance:

US label Atlantic Records wants Estelle to have surgery on her teeth to help her break into the American charts, say reports.

Her bosses also want her to ditch the boyish haircut she has in her ‘American Boy’ video and would like to give her image a complete overhaul, according to The Sun.

“The American executives are adamant she makes a lot of significant changes,” said a source. “They want rid of her tomboy hair and want her to get her teeth fixed.

“Estelle is not happy. She feels her teeth and the rest of her look are a big part of her character.”

The R&B star has spent the last three weeks at number one on the UK singles chart.

The truth of the matter is anyone’s guess, however it does raise a few interesting questions. Do you feel Estelle should comply with what the label want of her or refuse? Is this another (unfortunate) case of image over talent?

Your thoughts?

There is nothing wrong with her teeth or her appearance in the least bit! She is not a model, she’s a recording artist! I remember when they made joanie (i think) fix her teeth on ANTM and it was very long and painful..but then again the biggest part of being a model is your appearance (DUH).. However, the biggest part of being a singer is not, or SHOULD not b ur appearance. Hell if it aint one thing its another.. At least they can’t say she’s fat like they do others.. she looks gorgeous every time i see her. I mean, she’s not a damn puppet and I say F*ck Atlantic! They f*cked ova my girl Brandy anyway..

u know what? I think they tryna make Estelle into the Brandy that they lost.. Brandy’s teeth were fixed too and appearance wise (size, skin tone) they are similar

umm there is nothing wrong with her hair…..her hair is fly as hell, and the way she dresses.

now her teeth…i havent got a good look at them but hey she got this far so wat the hell is the issue.

They basicially want her to look as un-normal as possible. Celebrities can’t look like ordinary people like us…oh well.

    Hey, Sam! Love this site!

Anyway, I love Estelle’s look–very cool, perhaps it is a bit Euro, but the asymmetrical, androgynous haircuts are very ’80’s and that’s the trend right now. I think she’s very cute.

The teeth however…yeah…I think she’s buggin’ a little, she needs to get them straightened. Maybe I’m being stereotypical when I assume that it’s not a major issue in the UK, but in the US, it’s a lot different, and I definitely noticed them when I first saw the vid for “American Boy”. I thought, “OMG, she needs to get her bottom teeth straightened, that s*** is ruining her look.” Unfortunately this *is* the business where image is everything–being in the game for 10 years, she should just laugh at the politics.

Im loving Estelle…I think both her albums are hot and Im happy she has had succes…I wouldnt let them touch her hair, but I cant help myself when I watch her videos from wishing she had straight teeth…I love her how she is though, I would just love her more.

Me personally i would take being a superstar/celebrity as a chance to fix problems b/c of the money that i would be making….bills would be paid and i could basically get what i want…if yo teeth are fukd up why not fix them…i cant stand messed up teeth its jus nasty to me…the hair issue she could probably slide on but the teeth…she had to kno this was gonna come up….im pretty sure that she was teased about her teeth as a child….it so unfortunate it has to be like that but when you are in the public eye you have to look a certain way and if you dont conform to how they want you to look then Estelle wit get swept out the door wit her tomboy hair and her fukd up teeth….btw i dont have a problem wit her hair i like it…its just those teeth

That’s why it’s better to search for an independent label than trying to go big.I dont’ see a thing wrong with how she looks. I think she’s a pretty lady, next they’ll tell her she needs bigger boods and shorty skirts.

And you wonder why all the younger girls wanna look different.

  14. Anonymous April 10, 2008

f*** no…and if her beauty is unappreciated or thought of as not having crossover appeal, well, f*** em….i am an american boy that loves me some Estelle and she is head and above better than over rated, mass marketed leona lewis.

She shouldn’t have to change for anyone. Be yourself. We have enough look a likes. There’s nothing wrong with her look. Everyone likes fantasha’s look. I think she should stand up for herself.

What you fail to forgot is how much importance the USA puts on looks. Yes, she is a singer and not a model, but she has to be marketable. The only way the ignorant record labels in the US know how to market someone is through s**. Estelle, to many -including me- is not s***. In fact, I find it very uncomfortable to look at her, but she is normal looking. She is the girl you would see walking down Fulham Broadway going into Primark on a Tuesday afternoon.

Her voice is borderline adequate, her lyrics are not dis-similar to a ghetto Lily Allen, so what else can they possibly market her on?

This is not the first time that someone has been asked to change how they look to appeal to the masses. The actual interesting thing is if she complies. I know from her lyrics she has this I’m not going to change/I am an African woman/ I will not wear weave’ attitude. So lets see how important that attitude is to her now she has the US market in her (freakishly large) eyes.

This makes me want to give up on listening to music. Our country is pretty f****** sad to the point where we want everyone to be the same. The saddest part is when consumers are starting to believe it. I’m sorry Joshua I don’t mean to call you out but how is she “uncomfortable” when looking at her? She seems like a nice looking girl trying to make a singing career. It seems simple as that. This country is so f***** up. We won’t our singers/bands/rappers to be our idols so we can distract ourselves from life.

Yes Estelle needs her jacked up teefs fixed. Its an industry based on appearance. It will make her look better—–umm whats the problem??

If she doesnt go ahead (which I doubt she will) I hope she flops—bc to make it anywhere you have to bend to rules and be flexible.

She gives brits a bad name!! I have veneers and am proud of that—I take care of how I look and I HATE the expression “British Teeth”. WHY is everyone so NASTY—-get yo goodamn teefs fixed. LAWD!

A professional bleach job is not the end of the world considering how much most people spend on phones/gadgets clothes and general crap.

I agree with one of the previous comments, her hair is just like Kelis’s before she grew it out, Fantasia is rocking it and Rihanna is to. THis is b*******!! I love Estelle. I’m in the US and when I first saw her I was like OMG she is beautiful, her skin tone, her style and her voice is beautiful. THese record exec don’t know s***! WE know what we want and like and another BEYONCE is not it. THis is the same thing they did to Rihanna when she first started out. Jay had her looking and dancing like a mini BEY she even admitted that. Her record label didn’t want her to darken her hair or change herstyle but she stood tall and said I’m doin ME! Estelle Do U sweetie.

    her hair looks fine.
but what’s with all these people & “no my teeth are fine, it defines me.” DAM YOUR GETTING IT DONE FOR FREE, FIX YOUR DAM TEETH. haha

i love estelle, but she should fix her teeth

You know many stars from the 60s to 80s had unique looks or little physical flaws. It’s what made them. Diana Ross’s big eyes, madonna’s gap between her front teeth, Marvin Gaye’s unpolished beard, the list goes on. I don’t understand why everyone has to look “perfect” all the time and we are suppose to oggle them. I love popular music don’t get me wrong but at the same time it’s about the sounds they are producing no their looks at the end of the day.

  23. Anonymous April 12, 2008

Honestly, if I were her, I’d get my teeth fixed too. Real talk, but other than that, she’s aight.
