Mariah Carey Performs At Grammy Nominations Concert

Published: Thursday 4th Dec 2008 by Sam
Diva Mariah Carey took to the stage at last night’s Grammy Awards Nominations Concert Special in Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater to perform ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’ as a homage to the nomination of her record breaking ‘Merry Christmas’ holiday album all those years ago. Check out her performance below:

I have to give it to Mariah, she really delivered on this one. Yes, it wasn’t perfect or comparable to her earlier hey-day, but she sounded the best she has in a long while. For the first time in what seems like forever, she showcased specs of ‘The Voice’ – a voice many, myself included, argue was on the way out.

It’s worth pointing out that one of the reasons I’m hard on Mariah (and will continue to be) is that knowing what she is capable of – even still today – and then seeing the garbage she has been doing on stage for most of this year for example is frustrating. It may not be a her fault per se, but as an artist who knows herself and her talent, you’d think she’d know when it’s time to do something about her problem (be it rest her voice, surgery or whatever), because she’s playing herself thinking those promo performances this year were doing anything other than (pardon my language) sh*tting on her legacy. It’s one thing when the Sam’s of That Grape Juice and internet folk are getting on her for sub-par performances, after all we are going to talk regardless, however going on a show like The X Factor, which has a huge audience, and doing the equivalent of standing in the middle of the party and peeing on yourself with that horrid showing, only exposes her to ridicule by the masses. And ridicule they did – the media had a field day.

It’s worth pointing out that by no means is Mariah not still a great singer, it’s more a case of judging her by what we’ve come to expect. I mean, I’m baffled as to why there is so much noise about Britney lip-synching for instance…don’t think I’ve ever seen her sing live…she’s always lip-synched…she’s more a ‘performer’…what’s new? IMO it’s about judging artists by their own standards. That said, there are a few exemplary cases, who have never established any standard other than being crap…a certain Ms. Fenty comes to mind, but no need going into that LOL.

In a nutshell, I’d be more content with ‘this’ Mariah, whatever it takes for her to maintain such a level – be it taking a lengthy break, not releasing another full fledged album requiring gruelling performing promo or whatever. She shouldn’t do herself or her fans a disservice by giving us the Diet Coke Mariah and messing with what is a glittering career.

Now that little rant is out of the way LOL…

What do you think of the performance?

I love you Sam. You have no idea. You’re 100% honest, and that’s admirable. Just like me. I crap on Mariah and artists like Rihanna and Britney because being onstage is not simply a hobby; it’s their JOB. And there’s no reason you should suck at your job! Us normal folk (LOL) would get fired if we pulled s*** like these subpar superstars.

it’s true, what you say. I’ve been a Mariah fan since 1993 and this is the worst era with the best album or her career. I don’t understand her anymore…it’s ridiculous…

Mariah and Britney both had a very large share of lip-sync this year. They both receive all this hype around them but yet none of them can deliver. I have to give Rihanna credit at lease she do sing live and is improving every performance, while others are going down hill but yet people always trying to hate on Rhi Rhi. Please don’t get me started on how all this madness surrounding Britney they jus giving this gurl awards she shouldn’t of got it seems like the media is making the “Britney Comeback”

The UK media is obnoxious; they continuously fabricate stories and love to rip on American artists while hailing their national s*** like Girls Aloud and Take That. Those groups are not known anywhere but the UK. Sam, I am so sick of you bashing on Mariah and telling her to get surgery. I worked with an ENT (Ear, nose, throat doctor) and the surgery she will need on her vocal chords will require her upper chest to be cut open and the skin pulled over her face in order to reach the vocal chords — its a traumatic surgery!! Douchebag.

I agree with you 100%, Sam. I love Mariah. I’ve been a fan of hers since I was a little girl and it’s sad to watch her perform now. Mariah is an icon (of course), and I know what she is capable of. I just wish she would take a break or do whatever she has to do to get back to the OLD SCHOOL Mariah, when she used to sing her heart out and give us kick-ass performances. Her record label should also take that into consideration and stop wasting money on s***** artists who can’t sing or perform worth a damn (I.E. Rihanna). This performance wasn’t horrible, but I know what Mimi is capable of and it just seems like she’s lost her fire. 🙁

Sam u gotta luv dat Haterzzz sometimes u and Rihanna get some bashings..

2me on this subject u kept it real. I not sure if MCC needs surgery but a good vocal rest would do her good. I started to hear he potential come back & was pleased to get her somewhat back on her SANGIN trail…
Mariah ain't no average singer in truth as she can BLOW wen on form so hopefully she'll get there again..

Feeling her on this performance as I can see shes really giving it..
Mariah needs abit more confidence in herself and vocals again as she's seemed real tense in her showing this year.. When Mariah is fully relaxed and in her zone i know she'll be top notch or near enough there again..

There were some slight moments where she shined in this video but does anyone really care about Mariah anymore? She’s boring on stage and struggled singing that song the whole way through. The best thing we can do at this point is remember Mariah like she used to be.

“My Saving Grace” perform is so much better on this

Stop the hating Mimi pulled it together and worked it out. For the comment about do people still care about MC it seems you do because you made comment regarding her. For good or bad anyone that makes a comment shows they care in one way or another. The vocals seemed more in control than as of late hopefully things will get better for Mimi here on out. Keep doing you Mimi you didn’t get this far for nothing.

I completely agree with you,Sam… Its cray how much she used to be able to sing… and this was definitely the best Ive heard from her in a while…. I compared this to the original and mariah definitely did her thing….. I hope she is on her way back do the good ol’ days…….. GO MARIAH!

Move, MOVE, MOOOOOVE Damnit. Just take a little step to the left and then go back. Just move event an inch. She stands there like those old dolls with the stick up their ass. Sounded ok, but just MOOOVE.

If she has some problems with her voice (and indeed, this song demands a lot of shouting…) so I guess if you try to sing it this way then you’ll HAVE TO stand in one place too… It’s the only way to keep your voice stable… And she really sang it almost the way she sang it in 1994… 🙂 Go Mariah! 🙂

I posted a comment but I don’t think it went through so if you get two comments from me, that is why.

Anyway, I like what you said about judging artists by their own standards. I think that is only fair.

I also agree with you on Mariah Carey. I think she is trying to compete with the young singers by putting out album after album but it’s only hurting her career and her voice. I think at this point, she could be considered a legend but that status is slowly becoming a joke with every bad performance she does.

Instead of trying to keep up with the Rihannas and Beyonces in the world, what she (and so many other artists…ie Janet and Madonna) should do is accept their legendary status, take significant breaks in between albums and tours to rest up their voices and bodies and to enjoy their successes a bit. And when they do release a record, make it the way they truly want to make it, not what is “in” right now. I would think Mariah is at a point in her career where she can do whatever she wants to musically and maybe even challenge herself to change her style up a bit but I could be totally wrong. She may enjoy putting out record after record, slowly losing her beautiful voice and becoming more and more of a joke.

And I soooo didn’t expect this to be this long.
