Mariah Carey – ‘Hero 2009’ Video

Published: Tuesday 6th Jan 2009 by Sam
*With the holiday season well and truly done with, business is back to normal here. Expect all of you usually have from That Grape Juice and a whole lot more. 09′ means bigger and even better!*

With Mariah Carey’s former label Sony BMG set to release a new compilation titled ‘The Ballads’ in the US on January 20th (already available here in the UK), e songstress has released this new video for her classic ‘Hero’ (with re-recorded vocals) – which is features on the LP.

The video serves it’s purpose, in that it’s pretty much standard ‘music video in a studio’ fare. However, listening to this really does drive home how different (some would argue, deteriorated) Mariah’s voice has become. Yes, she sounds better than current industry’s vocal standard (which isn’t saying a whole lot), but touching one of her career-defining tracks and sounding a shadow of a shadow of her old self isn’t a good look. The restraint and croakiness in her delivery are un-ignorable. Sad. (Thanks Trent! You’re a star!)

What do you think of the song/video?

Again talkin some bullsh*t… Pardon my language but Mariah sounds just right…

This is just *the more recent* “laid back” version of “Hero” that Mariah’s singing in the last few (more than 10) years now and her voice is not worse, it’s just matured cuz she’s not the 20-year-old girl anymore now and there’s nothing bad or wrong about it… I can’t sound like a 15-year-old boy too when I’m almost 29 and my d*ck’s not like 15-year-old either… You get it? :)))

I think she sounds fine……You always hatin on Mariah, Sam LOL I think you need to lay off on that a little bit cuz I know I’m getting tired of the excessive negativity. I still love the site though LOL…let that woman live and do what she do!

As much as I am sick of the hating on Mariah’s vocals, this definitely doesn’t sound like the original. It sounds strained. Hero is a classic. The original version sounded effortless. This, not so much.

goddamn sam, i read this site frequently and the bias is ridiculous…every time mariah’s name comes out your mouth, you have to say something greasy and unnecessary…NOBODY sounds the way they did 20 years ago, especially those who use their voice in the way that mariah does…whitney doesn’t sound the same, mariah doesn’t, christina aguilera won’t in about ten years…also, beyonce ain’t s*** so sam, quit your stanning…solange’s album blew beyonce’s out the water and don’t give me that sales b******* and how she’s this ~diva and whatnot…just talkin’ pure artistry

also, this b**** ain’t even 40 and you wanna call her old…smh…no wonder all of these celebs are gettin’ botox and eye lifts and tummy tucks

SHE SOUNDED SOOOO GOOD…WOW, SHE SHOULD RE-RELEASE THIS, SERIOUSLY!!!

  13. Anonymous January 6, 2009

    SHE IS STILL BEAUTIFUL TOO!!!

many artist can’t re-sing one of their classic songs that is 10 years old…especially if it was one of the world’s most known songs, and not to mention requires a great vocal performance.

But Mariah always impresses me when she sings…her voice is STILL a masterpiece.

What is exactly wrong with Mariah’s voice. It is obvious she is constraining her vocals with the release of E=MC2. When Mariah’s fans thought she became she fat she lost weight. So if Mariah’s fans tell her not to hold back anymore she will probably sing like she used to a couple years ago.

I a agree with bobby of bulgaria!!!
Our voice just as our other parts changes in time and Mariah’s voice is not an exclusion!!!
besides, You don’t compare this version to the original bec it more laid back!
Let’s just enjoy what music has for us…

WOW. THIS IS BAD. REAL BAD. I’LL JUST YOUTUBE HER OLD PERFORMANCE OF THIS SONG. SO MARIAH’S “PRIME” IS REALLY BEHIND HER. SUCKS TO BE HER.

    Oh, shut up!!! You suck!

I honestly love it. The fact she can still do the song justice and still deliver such great vocals to me says more about her current ability than any blogger can. Her voice has been this way for the past however many years, there is seriously no point in complaining about it because she’s never gonna be 90’s Mariah, and people that are hung up in the past need to either move on or accept her for what she is now. Listen from 2:15 to when she sings the last chorus. Seriously, other than Leona, i can’t think of many other singers out now who could do the song justice and not ruin it. What would the point be in singing it again, if it was to sound EXACTLY the same as the previous? It was a shame her voice deteriorated slightly (i say slightly because other than clarity in her belt, and her runs sometimes being cut up, she is still a way above average singer), but it was a shame 7 or so years ago when it happened. Move on for crying out loud, i mean did you really not like it? Or did you just simply prefer the original version of the song? If it’s the latter, then f****** move on.

People try and act like she’s delivering some high-quality vocal performance in this video, meanwhile the song is blatantly auto-tuned during the bridge and many of the verses b/c Mariah somehow can’t hold onto a note anymore. She drifts flat and sharp alot now. I think she smokes too much of the purple. George Michael said it’s amazing for creativity but havoc on the voice, and 9/10 Mariah songs since 2003 reference it.
