She’s a gimmick, she’s always been a gimmick, and gimmicks fade. There are tons of other pretty girls that can be scooped up, made over, and turned into a “superstar”. It’s happened time and time again. She’s only been considered relevant since ’07 once GGGB was released. Nobody gave a hoot about her before then. Not to mention the media attention from the ‘incident’, her relationship with CB BEFORE the ‘incident’, and her connection to people like Jay-Z & Kanye. Without those connections to Jay, Kanye, Chris, etc. nobody would give a hoot about her wack ass.
I do have to admit what you said is the truth. I will give it to the girl, she is not hard on the eyes, and her style (or rather Stylist) is fly as hell but when it comes to talent and stage presense, she has NONE. I was watching her “comeback” performance and thought, OMG when will this end. She has a unique voice and with the proper training, she could be a powerhouse. But does it all lay on her, no. Rihanna has a kick ass marketing team, and a label that, for whatever reason, is willing to funnel ridiculous amounts of money into her to compensate for her lack of talent.
With any other artist, albums will sell on their performance and musical talent with comparatively meager promotion. Lady Gaga performed on X-Factor in the UK and her album shot up the charts and while the single she did went to number one.
Alicia Keys and Mary J Blige have been doing the promotional circuit performing their songs resulting in their albums debuting to impressive numbers just below Susan Boyle (who also is successful largely on her talent). Rihanna has been doing that same promotional circuit x 5. She performed at the AMA awards atrociously the day before her album dropped, has had more than one FREE underwhelmingly performed concerts broadcast live over the internet sponsored by her various companies she has endorsement deals with, PLUS the highly publicized interview and the regular tv performance circuit. Her album is doing half as well as people who have actual talent to offer.
How does her record label counteract this? They throw copious amounts of money at her “Hard” video where she, again, does absolutely nothing but strut around and depend on the creative talents and money of everyone around her to make the video visually and cinematographic-ally appealing.
And when all else fails, you have the tried and true “s** sells” adage. Rihanna has been spreading legs, flashing her tits and talking about possible being bisexual…
In answer to your question, Rihanna’s success comes largely from the fact that she knows people who are willing to go out on a limb for her to cover up her shortcomings, and as long as they are willing and able to keep hemorrhaging money and she stays beautiful, she will continue her path of domination.
Not to mention those high end producers and songwriters she is blessed to have at her disposal, who give her her chart topping hits, are expensive as hell.

Its really a shame because truth be told, I use to love this girl. “Music of the Sun”, and “A Girl Like Me” will always be a part of my cd collection. All that love faded when she came out with GGGB. Call me crazy, but the girl didn’t sit well on my spirit after that. Its something about her that I don’t like. I don’t know what it is, but it scares the s*** out of me. Having a bunch of songs that other people wrote and produced does not make Rihanna an “artist”, no matter how much those songs have “evolved”. She didn’t write them. She just sings them… and not exceptionally.
You could say the same thing about other performers such as Britney Spears, Ciara, Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez but there are actual things you can’t point to from them that are of their own making that they are talented at…. all of these people can perform their little buts off on stage dancing, Jennifer Lopez can act to boot.
There is absolutely nothing about Rihanna that you could say she’s talented at, or that she even tries that hard at, she simply has the talents of other people backing her.

I really like this blog and I agree with some of the things said in this post, Rihanna doesn’t have a big stage presence, and when you see her performances you really don’t expect something spectacular from them… but I gotta say in her favour that she uses to sing live, and I prefer one normal (she’s not that bad) Rihanna performance, than a very good playback.
I also want to say that Rihanna is now just 21, she’s starting and she has a lot of time to improve her singing abilities and her dances.

she really cant sing and she’s not even a mediocre sing but her voice has gotten better

i will have to say that she should stick to modeling and possibly acting
she is famous b/c of people like jay z and la reid who thinks that s*** sells (which it does)
the music and entertainment industry are focusing more on what sells or which celebrity can bring in the money rather than the well being of that individual
they dont assess their god given gift nor do they try to make that celebrity become talented by training them and watching over their money
i also think rihanna is popular b/c she has that carefree attitude about just being her and doing her and allowing her rep and the industry to take care of her
rihanna is overrated b/c she is taken being photographed every where she goes
and i think that annoys people b/c her true talent is not being focused on nor is it being evaluated, so in societies eyes its like she is getting paid for just going shopping, partying or on vacation

fantasia gets swipped under the rug as if they were trying too hard
when their talent voices are incredible

@ hadi-mann-e Madonna can and has always been able to put on one hell of a performance. She doesn’t have the best voice but her performance ability more than makes up for that. I went to your Stick and Sweet Tour and was truly amazed!!! I could look past her lack of vocal skiils if she hit the stage she brought a killer live performance. A killer live performance is one of the reasons i love ciara. Say what you want about her vocal skills but she kills it with her performances.
what i don’t understand this chick has been in the game since she was 16 and she has yet to evolve as a live performer. Evolution of live performance is just as important IMO as the evolution of the music. The only thing that has changed is she doesn’t dance any more. Baby girl was one stiff ass dancer. I don’t want to see your ass mug, strut, and catwalk for 2 hours unless you have Celine Dion/Whitney Houston vocals. There has got to be something she can do to amp up her live shows. I agree, RIhanna is far from a powerhouse, but that doesn’t mean she’s less deserving of the accolades and sales she’s accumulated. Pop music is not defined by how well a singer can sing necessarily but how well they can capture their audience and satisfy their fans. Gimmicks have been essential elements to pop music for decades and have catapulted decent singers to international fame. Madonna exploded with “Like a Virgin”, Lady Gaga (who i will say is one of the most talented artists out there) exploded with her intriguing stage presence, Britney Spears exploded with a skimpy school girl outfit, Elvis Presley and his hip gyrations, Ciara with “Goodies”, and Katy Perry with “I Kissed a Girl”. Bottom line, it is certainly okay to comment on how well she sings, but to suggest she’s not deserving or shouldn’t receive the attention she has is pointless since it’s obvious that Fantasia will never be able to outsell Jennifer Lopez in album sales, Jazmine Sullivan will never sell out arenas like Ciara has, and Maxwell will never become an icon like Michael. Vocal prowess doesn’t create an icon (although Beyonce is the exception b/c she is near icon status w/o having any gimmicks i can think of), it’s the gimmicks and attention-grabbers that do.

Just to add my two cents, Alicia Keys had more promotion with the collaboration with Jay z (New York) than she had with her own promo team. Rated R is said to be Rihannas best selling debut album in the U.S. I think both sides have points. Rihanna is known more for her style than voice, but her voice and style are very unique and you either hate it or love it. I personally love her style, she killed the Vogue Italia spread. This site sure knows how to get their numbers up with controversial articles.

Wow, I gotta say, you you guys and concreteloop.com are quite different when it comes to articles, and what I mean by that is the form of “opinion.” But I agree with a lot of what you said. Man, you actually took me back cause I remember when Rhia and T.Mari started out at the same time/on the same label back in 05 as Jay Z’s new up&coming projects. But I also remember not being too impressed by either, but they eventually grew on me. But I guess in the long run the light skinned princess wins again, though T.Mari is by no means ugly, just more urban, and we all know urban only goes so far. I however think Rihanna has a decent voice, but it mainly shows the most power in studio. Some artists can master the studio and stage, some can’t. She does need stage work, and she is not a perfect artist. But I guess that is where her looks step in as a back up. Yeah, I do kinda wish it was like back in the day, when it was all about the music, and the substance of it. But times have changed 20-30 years, and what we have are the memories.

Is Rihanna the best singer in the world – no. Obvioulsy not. Though she can sing well enough to do the songs she does. Her songs are good, whether that is the producers or her is another issue but she puts out better pop songs than most of the other pop stars at the moment. There are hundreds of singers half as interesting and far less talented than Rihanna clogging up the charts so either hate all of them or let it go. If you don’t like her don’t buy her music or listen to it and stick to the artists you do like instead of wasting your time on here thinking you are qualified to make opinions on other peoples talent/careers!

I Don’t agree that Rih RIh is blessed with beauty rather then talent. She is extremely talented because of her being a true artist. She can sing – she isn’t the very best in the industry but I wouldn’t go as far as saying she isn’t talented. She is very creative and versatile reaching a “broader” audience which is when a true artist is recognize thus remaining on top of the charts. When you box yourself as an artist – which is what most R&B singers do, you won’t sell as much. Rihanna has an international sound which is far more interesting and holds more weight in the music biz then just say – a normal R&B hit would.
