Richard: Have a seat! The album has sold almost 1.8mil ww that’s close enough and the label in ALL of their statements have consistently stated that they sold 2mil copies. It’s a hit and she is one of the few artists who didn’t need a big hit to sell the album.
Let’s face it, lots of artists have single hits but can’t move albums for jack and they wish they had her 1mil album sales in the US plus she’s over 40, u know ageism kicks in over here and she was gone for so long.

People keep saying how Whitney had this HUGE MASSIVE COMEBACK, uhmmm where have I been??? Homegirl put out an average album and has achieved average sales! I’m not hating, I’m just being honest! I’m so glad she’s back on the scene and doing well for herself and finally away from that disaster of a marriage with Bobby….but let’s be real, her “comeback” hasn’t exactly wowed many!
The album’s been out for like 6 months now and hasn’t even sold 2 million around the world? How is that a “whopping” success? Considering she’s been promoting it in countries all around the world and the media circus surrounding her coming back out. She had a great start in the US with the highly televised Oprah interview and such, but more than half of the sales she’s got in America so far have been from those first 3 weeks of her release….which goes to show that her hardcore fanbase was still there and were excited to see her comeback so her album moved in the beginning, but for her to go through the Christmas season and still not even crack a million in the US doesn’t exactly prove “comeback” story of the year to me.
The singles she’s released haven’t done anything on the charts in America, and yet Sam calls them “hits”??? Sam, you also called Mariah’s “Obsessed” a flop…yet that song was a BillBoard top 10 hit for weeks and stayed in the top 20 for more than 4 months and has sold almost 1.5 downloads alone. Uhmmm, do I sense a lil favoritism going on?
Props to Whitney and I hope she does even more with her album, but let’s call a spade a spade. It’s a decent album that’s achieved decent sales….I wouldn’t call it a huge comeback, but rather a step in the right direction for getting her career back on the ground.

ILTY has only been out 5 mths. It/s sold 2mil per the labe but if you think that’s shipped, it’s definitely sold almost that and 920k in the US. Whitney been gone for 7 years with bad press. She has done very limited promo with only 1 promo opp in each country yet before she even promoed, the album went to #! in 8 countries. Where do you get this massive promoting from. Whitney is almost a recluse, she is not a publicity w**** and rarely goes out. Again, only 1 promo opp in uk, france, italy, germany and 4 in the US- that would= very , very little promo that if other artists did, their albums would barely sell. No one said she had a ‘massive comeback’. She herself said it’s a come through. I’d say that she has had a comebac and ain’t nobody selling 3-5mil sales in this music decline state of being.
She got no airplay from pop and yet the album and the videos were hella late yet she has manage to outsell mariah 2 to 1. Sam is just stating the facts. ILTY was the #1 r*b seller of 2009 releases by a female and #2 besides Maxwell overall. Million Dollar Bill was #5 in the UK and is a HUGE hit that is still getting ariplay.
It’s a hit! Stack it against hot singers who had multiple songs out , multiple releases and their album still hasn’t gone gold or barely went gold and they are half her age, whitney did GREaT. Remember Whit is 46, show me a trend of over 40 artists getting great or good airplay on the radio and i’ll sell u some land in the everglades.

Factoid, while you post some valid points you are full of holes in your argument.
1) Whitney’s interview on Oprah was hyped up to the high heavens and even got a 2-day billing followed by performance just to get people even more interested. She did Good Morning America as well as the season finale of Dancing with the Stars which got like over 25 million viewers. Those aren’t exactly “small” promotional pushes. These are highly publicized billings.
2) This is Whitney first album in over 7 years like you stated. If an artist hasn’t released an album in over 7 years there is already a natural anticipation for their release which leads to HELLA press! Everyone knew Whitney was coming out with an album because they wanted to see if she still had “it” and it had been so long since she’s come out. There was already a natural curiosity to her release.
3) You say Whitney only did 1 promo push in each of these countries. You’re correct, she did 1 televised promotional performance on the BIGGEST SHOWS in those countries! Not just anyone gets to perform on “X-Factor” in the UK, that’s a HUGELY watched show. That’s a MASSIVE promo push…which was what I meant by that.
Like I said, I’m not hating on Whitney nor am I trying to compare her album promotion to the mess that Def Jam did to Mariah’s, but I personally don’t find Whitney’s “comeback” all that spectacular like some make it to be. And considering she was basically forgotten by the Grammy voters kind of goes to show you where the industry is on the subject too. She pushed her album up just so it could make the cut-off for nomination and still didn’t get a single nod. It’s a decent album, but not spectacular. A true “comeback” is an album that stands the test of time and produces material that shifts the state of the industry. And I just personally don’t see that in “I Look To You”.
Glad to see Ms. Houston back but in reality her comeback would have been bigger if she was on more tv shows promoting and honestly MDB had both R&B and pop appeal but the radio play is base on who is popular like Beyonce, Gaga, JZ, and Rihanna other then that you had to prove yourself all over again. Mimi had the same issue with TEOM. It”s like that started and WBT blow the fire over.
