Sade’s Soldier of Love Sells 501,665 First Week!

Published: Wednesday 17th Feb 2010 by Sam

After a ten year hiatus, Sade has shot straight to the top of the Billboard 200 with new LP ‘Solder of Love’, it has been confirmed today. The album, which is the band’s 2nd number one on the chart, sold through a whopping 501,665 copies in its first week on sale. In doing so, ‘Soldier of Love’ is already certified Gold – after just one week!

Recession? What recession?! It really goes to show that people will still buy music if they feel it worthy enough to pay for. Much congratulations to Sade on an amazing feat!

Randomness: I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about which artists are truly in the best position in today’s musical climate. Interestingly enough, we agreed it’s artists like the Sade’s and Whitney’s, who may not get much radio play, yet maintain an older audience who will go to the retail outlets in their thousands to buy a CD; an audience who aren’t a part of this ‘iTunes / downloading’ era. What do you think?

True talent always shines and finds success.

  2. Christina Marie February 17, 2010

As I knew it would! I’m so happy for her! Go, Sade =D

  3. Aunt Jackie February 17, 2010

That’s right! I bought two copies!

  4. YepYep February 17, 2010

Yes, I agree it is those who do not know much about the internet and about downloading music that are the ones who actually go and purchase good music in the stores. Its sad but until Record Labels do something about music getting leaked and downloaded version of albums, this trend will continue to happen.

    Congrats to Sade

  5. February 17, 2010

Now all I need are new albums from Lauryn Hill and D’angelo, since Sade and Maxwell both finally came back

  6. coldhearted February 17, 2010

how about a review on the actual album? I mean I’m happy for Sade n everything but I did buy the album, and after giving it a listen, I must say I’m a bit disappointed. it’s definitely no diamond of life/promise. I was expecting some heavy-bass instruments with amazing sax and acoustics, and I get some poppy background that sounds like she’s trying too hard to conform to today’s crappy R&B scene…anyone else get the same feeling? I’m loving the single, though.

  7. BEYONCE WILL NEVER SELL THAT MUCH IN A WEEK…SADE DO UR THANG GIRL!!! February 17, 2010

im hella happy sade sold like that

singers like sade and alicia keys are what the music industry needs to survive

  8. SASHA February 17, 2010

beyonce may not sell that in a week again but she did before. bday old 541000 in its first week. anyways its not about beyonce its about sade congrats girl. i am now looking forward to the first week of Monica and usher any predictions?

  9. Mikey February 17, 2010

It’s called having proper promotion….they were on 5 different televised shows last week which leads to huge sales. Her label did a great job at getting them a bunch of airtime this week.

And Sam, for the most part your argument holds no water. Look at Lady Gaga, her album has sold over 8 million worldwide and she’s the pinnacle of “the downloading age”. Fact of the matter is if the singles aren’t selling and radio isn’t playing it then the albums will have a short life on the shelf. Case in point, Whitney Houston who had a good 3 weeks of sales and the album has since faded into obscurity. You can never judge an album’s success by first week figures, it’s about the final result.

    @MIKEY

You are so right. There are so many albums that do extremely well the first week and then just disappear off the charts, and also albums that dont do so well in the first weeks and still end up going multi-platinum when proven to be a quality album. I’m not saying Sade’s sales will decrease, i really hope she does extremely well because she deserves it!

Sam is not entirely right, but he does have a point. Sade has fans of every age, young, middleaged and old too! (unlike the gaga’s, riri’s etc. which i am sure don’t have a mature, older audience, or at least not a big one like Sade, im sure there’s wacky old people around listening to that kind of stuff:) ) The latter two groups are more likely to go and actually buy the album.

And even if she doesn’t sell millions of copies (wich I’m sure she will) Sade’s music will ALWAYS be remembered and listened to much later in the future, and I can’t say the same for some (actually most) of the people dominating the charts today. That’s what really counts in the end.

  11. GEMATRIA12 February 17, 2010

well she was number one on itunes for a full week and counting too,so i guess young people are buying her too.

  12. Mr.727 February 17, 2010

This makes me so elastic to hear this good news!!! When you let the feelings of your inner voice move you to a place where magic and artistry meet, Sade has the right ingredients to serve you a sweet platter of soul! This is a positive sign that music is going to make turn a around for the better!!!

Sade congrats to your brilliant success !!

  13. aries_BLU February 17, 2010

All I know is that some people around me who usually buy mp3s actually took or talked about taking the initiative to get her album. And for a while the stores were out of stock. So it’s great to know that people are realizing and appreciating true talent again, regardless of age group.

  14. Mrs. Darren shellychelle Sharper February 17, 2010

Good for her! Now if only Lauryn Hill could come back, it would make my day.

  15. Ben February 17, 2010

I’m happy for her, nice to see her back, even though I feel the album is not her best work (shout out to “Coldhearted,” I agree with you), it is something I would call “Real Music,” and it is refreshing.

  16. danny boy February 18, 2010

@BEYONCE WILL NEVER SELL THAT MUCH IN A WEEK…SADE DO UR THANG GIRL!!!

why must the pitiful Beyonce haters bring her up in a post that has nothing to do with her…cuz you secretly worship the ground she walks on and thus you must put up a front *rolls eyes*

anyways, ive never really listened to Sade but congrats to her. major accomplishment

SIDEBAR: Beyonce’s B’Day sold 541,000 in its first week of release…. so go sit in a corner somewhere

  17. Terrence February 18, 2010

Got the album, love it! And for the poster begging Lauryn Hill to come back, she is a different artist from the Miseducation days, if you are looking for an album on that level of greatness keep waiting and wishing. I saw her at a show in New York, not only was she over an hour late but she struggled through most of her set and then began doing material no one recognized. Her performance was strange, strained, and sad. I’ve seen her at her peek and she is a fraction of her former self. Still talented but she just looked lost and she ended early which was met by a round of boos. Is she better than most of what’s out now yes, but just don’t get to excited thinking it’s the Lauryn of old.

  18. Richard February 18, 2010

Sade/Maxwell/Whitney did well bc they were gone for close to a decade. Case closed.

  19. Miguel February 18, 2010

Whitney disapointed me alot, I dont think she has any very solid album, a masterpiece but her last one was truly the worse of her career.
Congrats to Sade, she deserves it, I’m 16 years old and I love her

  20. MushyLove_1992 February 18, 2010

Yesssss! Go Sade! This my girl right here. Now I just need one from Lauren Hill, Monica, and Miss Kelly Rowland then I’ll be set.

  25. PLUG February 18, 2010

Sade has a FAITHFUL market. Her audience is indeed comprised of people who believe in buying music; legally paying for the product. I think it also helps when your singles and/or entire album do not leak on the internet. There’s also the fact that Sade’s audience is BROAD. She doesn’t cater simply to teeny boppers or the urban market. She is a well rounded artist with a well rounded sound and music like hers will always sell because it’s not a trend or a gimmick. It’s Sade. She’s one of a kind.

  26. cool chick February 18, 2010

    awesome i love her
and these are U.S. alone sales, simply amazing

  27. MJfan February 18, 2010

Why must Beyonce be a subtopic for every main topic that has nothing to do with her? When did Beyonce become a fairy, that you believe that if she’s not mention in every post, she would disappear? This post is about the artist Sade, once again it was not about Beyonce, and at this point, it’s irritating and disrespectful that stans feel the need to disrespect Sade in such a manner. Who cares how many records Beyonce sells, or sold. Sade is in a different league and different genre of music.Sade fanbase is adult, Beyonce is children who listen to pop/r&B.

  28. Oshanae February 18, 2010

Becuase when you make good music people will go by the CD i am a 80’s baby i am conditioned to by CDS that are great and Sade is well worth it.

  29. MS.CLAY February 18, 2010

YYAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY! I WAS ONE OF THOSE 500,000 + PEOPLE! AND THE ALBUM IS FIYAH! I LOOOOOOVVVEEE SADE!!!!

  30. MS.CLAY February 18, 2010

    @MJFAN

SORRY BUT IF YOU READ THE COMMENTS, I DON’T THINK A STAN BROUGHT BEYONCE’S NAME INTO THE POST FIRST, IT WAS A PERSON WHO DOESN’T LIKE HER. THE COMMENT WAS MADE BY @BEYONCE WILL NEVER SELL THAT MUCH IN A WEEK..DO UR THANG SADE.

  31. Jamie February 18, 2010

I didn’t expect any less. She put together an excellent album, and I’m so proud of her. Oh, and Soldier of Love rocks!!!

  32. Ace February 19, 2010

She delivers quality music people know that shes not a fad and its not something that will be here today forgotten tomorrow… people are paying for quality not garbage

  33. Traci March 7, 2010

I reserved a copy even before it went on sale. Sade is classic. People like her you HAVE to buy, not download.

  34. Brian David March 29, 2010

Yes her audience demographic skews toward record purchasing, however she was #1 on iTunes, and the ‘millennials’ feel a connection with her through their parents. They just don’t believe in ‘buying’ music in the traditional ways. True talent like Sade is timeless….
