In a recent interview with NME, Rihanna hit out against artists who use product placement in their videos; this, despite receiving heavy corporate backing from Nokia herself for the recent release of her ‘Rated R’ LP. Speaking on the issue, the model said:
“I don’t like things to be so commercial. I hate product placement in my videos. Videos should just tell the story of the song. With product placement it becomes this big ad campaign. I just don’t like that. Sometimes we have to, for whatever political reason, but it’s never my first choice.”
The 22 year old went on to critique the inauthentic nature of the industry, citing her own ‘rebellious’ streak with her ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ LP as to how she combated it:
After my first two albums I just said, ‘I’m ready to do it my way, completely.’
“So a few of us went into the studio, cut my hair, dyed it black. The label hadn’t seen anything, they didn’t know what was going on.
The mystique I have kept has been because I don’t say a lot. There are a lot of rumours about me, every day it’s something new.
I guess by not replying people never know what’s true and they never know what’s not true.
So that kinda leaves them wondering – they see me, but they never know what’s in my mind.”
Erm…yeah. Videos should tell the story of the song, and singers should actually be able to sing. Things that make you go ‘hmmm’
As for the image thing, I’m finding it a little hard to muster up anything other than ‘whatever’ at Ms. Fenty’s apparent rebellion against the label. It’s well-known in the industry and beyond that her darker image was cooked-up by her team as a last-ditch effort to garner sales for an artist, who besides a few moderately successful hits, was not bringing in the $$$.
It’s actually quite funny to see her trying to stake her claim as a credible artist now, when she’s in the middle of a move to a softer, less-edgy image; something only occurring because folk weren’t buying into that uber dark ish. I mean, 4 years into the game, and many are still struggling to understand who she is an artist (see: her album sales). Hell, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t know either. I’m just saying…

Umm since when would she even be a proper spokesperson for anything political? She naked. Sometimes popularity gives these psuedo-celebs the idea that they really are something deep and hard to figure out. I do not see anything challenging about Rihanna. If you got a public beatdown by a supposed boyfriend, and your face was plastered all over the airwaves for all to see, and then on top of that, people were blaming you for getting beat, won’t you lose some luster, and go into a dark place? If you guys have never experienced her exact situation, you don’t know what she was going through so to try to act like a person would go through something so tragic and suddenly come out with a record all happy and boppy acting like it was just a scratch on the knee instead of a bloody swollen beatdown is beyond me. She went through her phases of healing, and her music, and persona reflected that. You guys act like this girl is not human and shouldn’t go through the normal things like we all do. But of course we her true fans get that. We know that rated r is just the album where she vented, and let out all of her feelings. I don’t think that was the case at all. This image was in development before that happened. This about a logical progression, just for a moment take ‘being a fan’ out of it. Where would she go from Bad-girl? Certainly not back to good-girl. So, she had to go darker. When this image didn’t resonate (I blame that largely on her beating, actually) she has now reverting to something lighter to sell records.
The explanation that she was venting after a beating was really an afterthought. Fans seem to buy into that, but I don’t believe that. It’s not as logical as the first explanation. It doesn’t really make that much sense, if you sit back and think about her image progression through her carreer.
Let’s not forget this is the same woman who went back to Chris Brown after being beaten, and only decided not to be with him because the media spanked her (verbally of course) when they go a hold of the information. Let’s not forget this is the same young lady who only gave an interview about her situation right before she was about to release her album. I’m not trying to open old wounds.
All I’m trying to say is that fans see it one way because they like Rihanna. If you have a more neutral stance and think about things logically, it’s easier to see that her whole world is orchestrated and controlled mostly by people other than her. And most decisions made are made on the basis of preserving her career, not because these thoughts, ideas or decisions arise naturally or honestly. This was revealed in the last year, and I think the beating helped reveal that. It’s not her fault, but the decisions made in the wake of the beating exposed her, I think.
That’s why she’s lost her luster, and appeal. Most of my friends that were fans have just said they lost interest in her because she seems fake. As for me, I never really took her too seriously and try to appreciate her for what she is.

@aunt jackie that is just your opinion on the issue, but most of the records on her album tell a different story and showed that she was indeed in a dark place when it was recorded. She started recording after the incident and she recorded for 8 months. Also, of course she would go back to chris, after all this was probably the pattern, or the first time she was abused by her boyfriend, and didn’t exactly know the textbook steps to take. She was young and driven by her feelings, or heart, rather than wisely thinking things through. And it took advise from older more wiser people like family and friends, who are more familiar of what violence in a relationship is, to help her to know that it wasn’t a good idea to stay. I would say that she exercised strength, because it takes a lot to leave someone you love, because it was the right thing to do instead of staying and things could have ended up worst. If you are older than rihanna, you may look at things one way, but at her age, I can see where she could have erred in her judgement at first by going back, but in the end, she righted that wrong.

She has talent, and that is that she can be molded into whatever is hot at that time. I consider it more of an attribute, rather than a talent. It is amazing that this girl has amassed legions of fans, endorsements and a pretty successful career all without being able to carry a tune, sing without her voice cracking, or dance to save her life. As for your comment about singing without auto-tune, do you know how much the edit Rihanna’s voice in the studio? It might as well be auto-tune.
She can be molded, she can change, she can shift. No everyone can do that. Her team facilitates or does it, but it is her face and ‘I can place her’ look/attitude that allows this to happen. You said all the things she can’t do, but never named one she can. Because when you get right down to it, she has no musical talent. I’m not about to sit up here and say Rihanna is blowing chicks out of the water, but I do think she’s underrated vocally. She definitely does not belong in the Cassie/Ciara category. She can actually do riffs, runs, harmonies, etc. Her voice is an acquired taste. To some it’s unique and different, to some it’s annoying and whiny.
As an artist, it’s easy to see why she works. She takes risks with her music, none of her singles sound the same, and none of them sound like any other songs. She has the ability to to adapt to any track and genre, which most artists can’t do.
Again, I’m not naive. I know that her label is carefully crafting her career, but I also feel like she’s enjoying what she’s doing and not just going through the motions. She’s a 22-year-old woman. I don’t think she would look the same, sing the same type of music, and think the same as she did when she was 16. NOBODY does.

Child please! There are many artists who don’t have talent but have been just as successful if not more successful than Rihanna. That’s exactly my point, she doesn’t stand alone. If she did not have the phenomenal PR team that she had she wouldn’t survive in the industry. I stopped reading when you said rihanna sings only about love, that is so untrue, she has many songs and they are not all about love. How about please don’t stop the music or disturbia, rockstar 101, pon de replay . Rihanna also took a risk with putting out this new album and sound, when she could have played it safe and did the same successful format of GGGB, so don’t give me that ish about gaga takes risks and rihanna don’t and is controled by label. How do you know this, so rihanna is the only one in the entire industry being controlled by a label right? Please. Rihanna has just as many creative input as the next one.

Wow, I’m saddened at these comments and how easily manipulated our generation has been by the industry (music and beyond).
Wake up my friends, this interview is a product placement in itself! The product however is less subtle. The product is an idea: rebellion against conformity through changes in physical appearances. More overtly, she is promoting her new album.
I think people forget how much of a puppet Rihanna (and many mainstream “artists”) is. The admission of product placements in her videos is shocking in itself. Don’t you think her record label and PR would be enraged if she said something like that?
Well, they aren’t because she isn’t rebelling at all. In fact they probably told her to, as part of her new counter-culture persona, to say something shocking and anti-conformist. This makes her seem relatable and not a pawn of the industry. It makes her seem as if she’s wise to the puppeteers that control society and understands the struggle to be and individual in a suppressed society. She understands you.
We have to be aware that this icon Rihanna is just a collection of hairdos, dark nail polish, racy and sexual lyrics that are meticulously calculated. Every interview, every red carpet event, every photo, she is being cultivated by her label. She is not a true individual because she knows of the injustice of manipulation, yet she would rather be altered and used as a commodity than fight for her freedom to be herself. Its also highly ridiculous that her view of rebellion is changing her hairstyle.
Finally, in this interview, she is also selling the idea that mass ad compaigns that manipulate and saturate our entertainment, our unwanted but unavoidable. She is saying that it is a “political” motive that we “have to” endure. Basically she’s giving up her power to stand up. She’s saying that we should just accept these maniupulations because we have no power to change them. Wrong Rihanna! We don’t have to accept or buy into anything! We don’t have to believe in conformity as well as you don’t have to give up your creativity as an artist for monetary reasons.
The label isn’t evil, and neither is Rihanna, but we need to take back our indiviudality. We need to take a step back and really think literally about what messages we’re being fed in corporate America.
Haters, I dont understand why u say this girl girl cant sing. she doesnt have the best voice in the world but come on guys, cut her some slack cause ive watched some of her concerts online and i must say that im very impressed with her singing and her performances. The 1 thing i have to mention is that theres no need for her to walk around in a stupid leotard and half naked. Girl, theres no need to use your sexuality cause being discreet will get you much many fans, more than what you have. More ppl wud listen to your music and go to your concerts and all the Rihanna haters out there will choke on their own words. just stop making songs about s** and s***. Riri’s music is always evolving and i dont remember any other artists doing all these different genres, and that keeps her interesting. Most of the time shes well groomed and ppl dnt like to see this, they not getting any negativity from her( besides the sexual things) and ppl are so used to celebs being messed up that they cant understand why this girl doesnt step out of line. So Haterrrrrs with a capital H, go bang your heads against a wall or something and stop hating on Riri.
