Aaliyah’s music unlike many is sacred to a point and that’s because despite their having been many more powerful singers in the industry during her time, she created something in her music that artists both of her time and after haven’t been able to and isn’t easily replicated without ‘wtf’ results. Aaliyah was beautiful and could dance but more than that she had a un-begging genuiness to her personality that truly came through in the songs she chose, the way she put her vocals down and it made the edge in her music feel authentic and uncontrived. Basically, the are a lot of layers involved and all the singers that’ve attempted her stuff tend to skip all those layers. It’s a testament that even after she died the strongest aspects of her appeal live on i.e. her music. Additionally, despite her being quite a soft singer (in terms of projection) the true greatness of her voice is more often demonstrated when stronger voiced singers try to cover her material, they try to power and riff over it when many times her subtlety and restraint is what made/makes her music so listenable. For many reasons her tracks shouldn’t be touched but honestly, her influence was so wide spread and so many many of today’s artists grew up jamming to her muysic that all those who try their hand at covering it are most likely hardcore fans of her like the rest of us so I won’t hate Dream for trying…, maybe just don’t release it for people to actually hear next time.

First off, I am a huge Aaliyah fan! That being said, just because she has passed doesn’t mean that no one can cover her songs. Aaliyah as sweet as she was, is not a God and is not above anyone. She would probably be flattered.
HOWEVER…this was a H.A.M!! He butchered this song and did no justice to it what so ever. Not the mention the Autotune. It’s not that fact that it’s and ‘Aaliyah’ song and she can’t be touched, it’s just that he did a really bad cover. This was just horrible!
