With her new album, ‘Basic Instinct’, on course to sell an underwhelming 35-40k in its 1st week, Ciara has ironically addressed the issue of low album sales with the Associated Press. The ‘Gimme Dat’ performer denounced the importance of record sales, claiming that they are “becoming smaller fraction of branding”.
See what Ciara had to say about the issue below:
AP: How do you feel when people say that your star as singer has fallen?
Ciara: Even though my last album didn’t do as well as my previous ones, I was still able to go out and make money and tour. Every day is not always the perfect day. Artists that I have loved and admired, who have had a long career, have not had every record or song or video that was always the right choice.
AP: With your previous album not selling well, are you concerned about what type of numbers you put up for “Basic Instinct”?
Ciara: Selling records are becoming smaller fraction of branding and building a long-lasting career. You can sell a lot of records, but can you tour. You can sell records, but where does it go beyond that? That’s a part of building a brand for yourself.
AP: So at this point of your career, going on tour has bigger precedence over album sales?
Ciara: Absolutely. If you can walk away from your career and are successful touring, you’ll always be straight. Artists like Madonna have been doing it for years. She may put out one single, do a tour and gross over $200 million. {Source}
While album sales in the year 2010 are far less impressive than they once were, labels still focus on the bottom line. Moreover, even if that wasn’t true, for labels to reap substantial profits from a tour the artist would have to be headlining at sold out venues (medium to arena-sized) which Ciara isn’t known for doing.
I understand her thinking but Ciara simply isn’t on the level of Madonna or Britney Spears (for whom she served as an opening act during the ‘Circus’ tour) who make enough money to satisfy their labels. In other words, she isn’t a big enough artist to be making these claims.
This ‘Basic Instinct’ era is truly a commercial disaster. Hopefully things will improve in the long run.

Labels don’t make money from an artists tours unless they have a 360 deal, which Ciara doesn’t have with Jive.
Ciara has done tours in the past with other artists and she still does shows overseas, like her shows in Australia and China earlier this year.

This is a sad situation when Ciara is clearly talented and deserves success. Her dancing is beyond amazing and her vocals are smooth and she has a great tone, plus she makes great music and puts on a must-see show!

She is right that she can continue to be paid via touring. However,you still have to have a decent catalogue of songs that people know in order to sell tickets. Also you have to make sure you aren’t caught in one of those 360 deals where the record company takes a fraction of your tour earnings.

I didn’t like her Basic Instinct album. It didn’t sound like she went to the basics, most of the songs, still sound like dance r&b pop, like Fantasy Ride. I think her fans moved on because there are other major female artist that take the attention away from Ciara. She needs to try something different, she has the same music and dance techniques.
I think Ciara can become a entrepreneur. I knows she models, and she has done some verizon wireless commercials. If she expands her brand, she can still become successful, such as getting into acting, or doing other things.
Rihanna’s album last two albums didn’t get into the number one spot. It eventually became platinum from constant touring (Rated R) and (Loud is destine to go platinum, from touring) and promotion helped her album sales.
Even if Ciara is not an A-list singer, I don’t think all is not lost. I think Ciara needs to do something different in music, if she continues to work in the music industry. She does has talent. So I guess we will see. : )

Okay, so i think part of the problem is that Ciara isn’t the best singer, and she also need to realise that ATL isn’t the be all and end all.

Ciara should go on blogs like this and read the comments. She is not dealing with reality. Sometimes artists have a bad sales on an album and then listen to what their label says, what critics say, and what their fans want and use that to make their next album more consumer friendly. Monica and Fantasia did this with their albums this year and that is why they have good comments on Amazon. Ciara wants to be a big time pop artist but is not doing the work it takes to get there. The people she used as examples are white and their situation is different from hers. After all everyone knows it took Madonna built her career over a long period of time and put in the work it takes to become successful. Britney has always been “fan” and “label” friendly and will listen to her fans and use good producers for hits. Britney has never been stuck in a one-track mindset when it comes to making music.
Ciara had one album that sold low but ppl need to remember that the only female singers who perform in huge arenas and stadiums are Beyonce, Britney, Xtina, Pink and Gaga. Rihanna, Katy Perry and Kesha perform in mid sized venus and so does Ciara. Rihanna cancelled like 10 shows on her last tour due to low ticket sales so she can’t sell out s*** either. Kesha is still opening for other artists and Katy Perry’s venues are in the 5,000 – 10,000 capacity. Ciara’s are in the 5,000 – 7,500 capacity which is decent in my opinion. But I would rather see Ciara over Kesha, Rihanna and Katy any day. The first 5 are great at performing. Just remember ppl, Ciara sold 340k in the first week in 2006, that’s more than Rihanna, Katy, Kesha, Pink and Gaga have ever sold in the first week. Even if a singer has low 1st week sales, they can still tour. Lady Gaga headlined the Fame Ball in the Spring of 2009 and The Fame sold 24k in the first week and because of the tour, her sales skyrocketed because of word of mouth. So even if Ciara sells 35k in the first week and went on tour, I’m pretty sure her sales would go up because Ciara is a great performer and she always get great reviews for her performances and a lot of media outlets to promote tours more than albums for some reason. Jive Records just need to step up and start promoting Ciara and Xtina the way they promote Pink and Britney Spears. Xtina has cancelled two tours due to a lack of promotion for her albums, singles, videos and tours. I really hope that Ciara and Xtina can make a comeback because they both are talented as f*** and ppl know, and ppl love to hate on other ppl who have something they don’t have.
Ciara is not the greatest artist out there, I know, but I think her sales and some of the comments on this page show that maybe independent might be the way to go, if she had something to present to the world artistically. I mean, making her album urban was always going to be a mistake, since as people have correctly noted here, black people don’t buy albums. But, what if one doesn’t wanna go pop?

And come to think of it, a lot of artists do make money of touring. Because Kesha, Rihanna and Katy Perry are not massive album sellers. Rihanna had one album that was massive and because she didn’t write any of those songs, most the money she made came from the GGGB Tour and I know she didn’t make that much from the LGOE Tour because she cancelled damn near 10 shows due to low ticket sales. Teenage Dream has only sold around 2 mil worldwide and Animal has did around 2 million worldwide too, Ciara makes money not just from singing, but from writing and touring as well. Just because a tour isn’t a massive 100 show, 75 city, 25 country world tour, does not mean that artist is not big. Case in point: In 2007, Kelis toured around Europe and Kelis Was Here sold 165k in the US and around 300k worldwide, Kelly Rowland toured of Ms. Kelly throughout 2007 and 2008 and that album sold around 1.25 million worldwide and she went to Europe, Africa and Asia.

What she said regarding how tours are more important than sales, well she’s partially right. But that only applies to artists who at one point were huge for a period of time, and are on the decline as far as album sales go but still do well on tour. Obviously record labels SPEND money to make & promote an album, and they expect to see a profit in turn. So if your album is a MAJOR flop… what’s gonna fund the tour? Why should the label assume that people will wanna see you live if no one buys your record, and you’re not exactly on the level of Madonna or U2 or The Rolling Stones as a live act? Christina’s Bionic bombed pretty badly as well, and she had to cancel her tour for it. And she is an overall more successful and more well-known artist than Ciara.

She has wack ass management and it appears she doesn’t have much support from Jive either, but I also believe that her music just isn’t up to par. *shrugs*
I feel bad for her (not her stans cause they stay clownin other artist knowing how bad she is struggling her damn self, they know who they are) but she really needs to evaluate her career right now. She needs a new team and needs to find a way to reinvent herself. Most importantly she needs to get her music together and start working with some producers and song writers than can produce some hot material for her. She has a long rode ahead of her and I hope she has some sort of plan.

Ciara does seem as if she is making excuses a bit there or views her career in WAY different terms than everyone else. She is a recording artist therefore she is supposed to sell records, then with that comes the other stuff. Labels wouldn’t invest $ without expecting to see a return-period. So that’s why 360 deals are around, the labels have to make money off an artist some way if it is not in album sales. So they will help an artist get endorsement deals (books, fragrance,etc.) and will fund album and tours to hopefully recoup cost and make profit. My question is what happens if an artist can’t deliver?
Every label wants an artist that can sell album, singles, concert tickets and anything else they put their name behind, that’s branding! There are VERY FEW artists that can do all of those things and she isn’t one of them either. She is clearly not at the same place in her career as Madonna or lots of other artist so I don’t really know how she thinks she can just tour and not sell something.
I wish her luck but I don’t know if she has yet proven if she can really do any of the above. Right now her label is investing in her potential but I don’t know how much longer they will.
Major labels are vicious and truly are about the bottom line, them making money above all else!

When she says “branding” I don’t think she just means touring. F*** album sales for Ciara, she can do many other things to make money. I say she should sign on to do some modeling contracts. Everyone says she looks like a model and they make some good money. But regardless, she is still on top of her game IMO. Low album sales doesn’t take away from the fact that the music is good, and I think “Basic Instinct” is a good album so I’m 100% satisfied. Ciara knows what she’s doing. This album can chart at #168 with 3,000 copies sold for all I care.
The only thing that can save my girl’s career now is crazy dance video with Usher for “Turn it Up” AND a threesome s** tape with Lala and Kim.

I really think this was bad promo from her label. She did one big televised performance the week of her album release, WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? She could have at least did 90k+ in the first week had her label released the album around the time Ride was the single and then followed it up with SHUT THEM UP right before its release and her numbers would have been tripled these labels make thousands and millions off her previous efforts and they want even give the woman decent performances. Instead she had several “interviews” with her just talking when she should have been performing.

I think her major mistake was working with tricky and dream. I mean look at her sale before she started working with them and look at her sales now. It’s not that people don’t care about her or don’t know her it’s because of the music she is putting out. Ciara used to be innovative but now she just seems stuck in a rut. I don’t think this will be the end of her career because if it was she would be on blogs daily. So my advice would be to just stay away from tricky and dream because they are killing album sales. They did it with xtina and now ciara.

Anyway, in all seriousness, Ciara’s music sucks. It’s ghetto, shallow, outdated, and generic. She can’t sing, her dancing is so ghetto and cliche, and she doesn’t have a striking image or persona. What people need to realize is that she only got famous during her “Goodies” era because crunk n b music was big back in 04! She got signed at the right place and right time. Then, she was able to give off that Prince vibe that everyone was doing in 07/08 during her second album. Now, she has nothing to turn to since electronic pop music wouldn’t fit her urban image or voice. It’s good that she wanted to stick to doing urban music, but honey, you’re not talented or innovative like Sade, Keyshia Cole, Alicia Keys, Monica, Maxwell, or Chris Brown and able to put out true contemporary R&B or soul music and sell millions around the world or at least reach gold status. And you’re not unique, determined, assertive, or bubblegum, gimmicky, and surrounded by the best management, publicists, hair and fashion stylist like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Katy Perry and able to trick people into buying your music. She just doesn’t belong. Her and Keri Hilson need to hit up the unemployement office and find a regular 9-5 job.

The problem here is that Ciara had to many pushbacks. When Ride’ had all of that buzz that when her label should have released her album, it was rising and people wanted Ciara then, i think she would have atleast sold 100k or came close to, then if she followed that with a hot hit single, she would have been good. Ciara is beautiful, and an awesome performer. I think the song with she and Usher may be the hit that she needs. Right now she needs a hit single, and if she can get that she’ll be good to go. You don’t have to have the most powerful voice to sales albums which is already been well known.
However, u have to be that much more creative. Tricky & Dream are tired producers now. All of there music sounds the same, Why would she allow the Dream to produce her whole album ? I think that was a huge mistake. She needs a new direction. She still needs to keep on keeping on with this project tho, if she some how can find a hit single or two rerelease the album, then she needs to change directions and switch labels. Jive has to damn much going on. They have to many artists to promote, but they don’t promote them properly. Album sales are important, because without them what would u be singing about or performing to. Tank is even expected to sale 40 to 50k.
I wanted for her to do good, hopefully her sales will pick up. She has been performing her a** of tho. Her label did a p*** poor job of promoting this project. She needed a hit single, and a ton of promo before this week, promoting an album the week before it comes out is not a great idea.

There’s an old saying about most recording artists having trouble sustaining interest after two albums. Lil Kim’s best selling albums were her first two. X-tina’s third album was critically acclaimed but didn’t sell nearly as much as the first two and Bionic sold even fewer than that. You could say the same of Britney Spears as well. You can’t compare Ciara to Ke$ha or Nicki. They are new artists, and it’s very likely that they might be in Ciara’s shoes after two albums, particularly Ke$ha.

Taking all that into consideration and the fact record sales are low in general at the moment, this was never going to be a massive seller. I don’t know what her team are playing at but they need to get it together, Ciara is a talented girl and deserves better than this.

The first date of Janet Jackson’s upcoming 2011 world tour in support of her Number Ones greatest hits album will be in Hong Kong on February 14, it was announced on her official website.
Tickets for the concert, which will take place at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, go on sale next Tuesday, December 14, at 10 a.m.
