Madonna Scores 12th UK #1 Album/Breaks New Record

Published: Sunday 1st Apr 2012 by David

She’s called the Queen for a reason.

Yes, while many would like to write Madonna off as the Margo to GaGa‘s Eve, it appears the former is just as popular today as she has ever been- despite the continuous age bias her cause suffers from.

Because, as of today, she has scored her 12th UK #1 album with ‘MDNA‘.

Details below…

Now holding the record for having the most #1 albums as a soloist, the LP’s success follows the icon’s stint at Superbowl 2012 and the release of the controversial video, ‘Girl Gone Wild‘.

Beating David Guetta‘s ‘Nothing But The Beat’ to the top spot, the album is set to follow suit in the US with unexpectedly high first week sales predictions.

Not so hard to go #1 especially when you sell you’re album with each concert ticket.
The ranking is deceiving though, as a chunk of Madonna’s sales aren’t factored into the Building Chart yet, so she and Richie will likely switch positions on the final Billboard 200 album chart. (“MDNA” has a significant number of sales from non-traditional outlets, including those from a concert ticket/album promotion.)

RE: THE NEW QUEEN OF POP…um the fact you get a copy of the album for spending $200 a ticket for her concert seems 500x more fair than GaGa selling her album for 99 cents on Amazon. People bought tickets for the concert so why shouldn’t they get the album?

Trash should not have a number 1. Its not her best just for money.

#1 albums are easy to get when you are a major artist…especially in the UK because they love trashy dance music. Next!

So what you are saying is that Madonna pulled a page from LADY GAGA’s GIMMICKS & SCHEMES BOOKLET? Lets not forget the 2 for 1 BEST BUY CD/Cellphone SCHEME or the 2 day $0.99 AMAZON dot com 1st week CD sell SCAM!

Don’t get me worng, I think you’re right but I’m just saying there has been a lot of this sot of “cheating” going on in the music industry as of late!

True & True!!! I have to start calling you my twin, because you always say what I want to first. 🙂

I expected Madonna to get the #1, but after seeing how it was done I do feel like Lionel is being cheated somewhat. I don’t stan for him, it’s just that right is right!

The cost of the album is probably factored into the cost of the concert tickets. Either way obviously she did not break Billboard’s new Gaga rule or the sales wouldn’t count. Until they give us a break down we dont’t know all the facts about what percentage of her sales came from the promotion or whether she still would have been number one without it. Anyway, so far it doesn’t seem to matter.

  20. JER April 1, 2012

that doesn’t make any sense. FAIL. Margo Channing is the queen b**** so how is Madonna writin off as the queen? Another 4lop post by that BeYAWNce juice

  21. lucy April 1, 2012

This is her 12 th number 1 in the UK. She had no concert promotion ticket offer here, that is US only. She made number 1 purely from actual sales. Yes, that’s right, people actually buying the album 🙂

  22. CzarM April 1, 2012

At least she’s not selling her s*** for 99cents likes her cartoon copycat. THAT was a chart scheme if I ever saw one. Madonna’s concert tickets are expensive; the way I see it if you’re willing to spend over 200 dollars for one, a complimentary CD should be part of the package.

  23. Dax April 1, 2012

I doubt those CDs are even complimentary. They probably just factored in the retail price of the CD into the ticket cost. I doubt Madonna’s giving away anything for free.

  24. Mr.Geezy April 2, 2012

Props to Madonna even though the album is a little lackluster in my opinion.

  25. Saetana April 2, 2012

For the last f****** time – Gaga had NOTHING to do with that Amazon promotion, they paid full price for the album and chose to sell it cheap to promote their cloud music service in competition with iTunes! Anyway, even if you take those sales away, she STILL sold about three quarters of a million the first week as it was a US only promotion and the album went No 1 here in the UK and all over the world. I am getting REALLY sick and tired of people spouting crap about this – nobody in their right mind CHOOSES to sell their brand new album for 99c, she said herself the promotion was a “nice surprise”. Unfortunately the backlash against her, when she had F*** ALL to do with this promotion (nor did Interscope), has been an ongoing saga because some people can’t f****** read and have made their minds up regardless of proof to the contrary including a statement by Billboard confirming this fact. Amazon chose the biggest album release of last year for their promotion.

As for Madonna, its no great surprise her album entered at No 1 as her fans mostly preordered it. The real test will be how long it stays in the charts ;o)

  26. Miguel April 2, 2012

    @SAETANA

    Exactly.
Not a GaGa fan, but have to say some people come up with the lamest excuses to justify her success. Her album was a hit, pure and simple… almost 10 million copies worlwide at the moment, I’ve read recently.
And “The Fame” / “The Fame” monster also sold millions worldwide without any .99c promotions…

  27. Saetana April 2, 2012

@MIGUEL – I can see the Madonna fans marshelling their arguments now about why she hasn’t sold as many as Gaga. They will say you can’t expect someone her age to sell as many as a young artist, but then slag other posters off for being ageist if they should dare to mention that she is in her fifties. To be fair, this is the first time I’ve seen the 99c argument in the last couple of months, it had pretty much died a death until Madonna released MDNA. Ah well, the 99c arguement is only useful for the first week’s sales, after that they will need to find another reason to justify her comparatively poor sales. I actually wanted Madonna to put out a decent album, unfortunately I’ve heard MDNA and this isn’t it. Falling Free is a fantastic track though and the only one I’m likely to buy myself ;o)

  28. aishaaguilerakeys April 2, 2012

Congratulations are most certainly in order! I’m going to be honest, apart from the two lead singles I REALLY don’t like the album, but not everyone can achieve 12 # 1s.

  30. DTG April 2, 2012

If you think Gaga and her camp weren’t in on that 99¢ thing, then I have a burning bridge to sell your ass. That crap was plotted and planned months in advance; they all knew that s*** was happening. Gaga and Interscope ***conspired with*** Amazon to sell her wack ass album for peanuts because she wanted to debut high to prove some point that wound up backfiring on her. Period. Don’t try to act like this was above her loony toon head. She knew.

Furthermore, the album went on to drop 85% in the second week, the biggest drop ever for an album that “sold” over a million copies. Why did it drop? Because when the s*** stopped selling for quarters, the general public stopped being interested. Compare BTW to all the other albums that sold over a million in its first week, and you’ll see what a flop it was comparatively. Reason being, those other albums LEGITIMATELY sold a million and didn’t fake the funk like hers did.

BTW was not a hit. It sold less than The Fame…and in the music business, you are only as good as the sales of your previous album. 10 million, my ass…that s*** sold just over 5. Leave it to a “monster” to lie about #’s. Unfortunately for you, I’m not buying your snow job. Interscope shelled tens of millions to promote that album; the hype was massive. You know so good and damn well they expected it to sell more than double platinum in the US and 5 million WW. Please. They didn’t turn a profit and wound up losing their shirts on that s***…which is why promotion was halted less than a year after its release and they sent her crackhead ass back to the studio to come up with something new and more cost effective.

BTW existed on *nothing but* hype continued from Gaga’s 2009-2010 era. It didn’t generate its own acclaim and when the smoke cleared, people weren’t feeling it.

  31. Onyx April 2, 2012

    Her Holiness MADONNA.

  32. Globaltrackchart April 2, 2012

DTG? Do u have enemy? Lol. Gaga is gaga. Shes a household name and she will sold more.multi platinum albums in US and abroad. Btw, congrats to Madonna for her 12 th number one album.
