Continuing Madge’s latest pattern of see-sawed success comes ‘MDNA’‘s second week sales figures which are expected to set a new record as the largest 1st-to-2nd week drop in Billboard history.

According to Forbes, ‘MDNA’ is slated to pull in a approx. 46K in its second week dropping a whopping 88% from first week’s high of 359K. “Most of Madonna’s first week sales were CDs that were included in the sale of concert tickets. That promotion artificially inflated Madonna’s numbers, putting her first before Lionel Richie and his “Tuskegee” album. In the second week, Richie fell only 47% and sold about 110,000 albums–which is normal.” Wow, that’s a record we’re sure Lady Gaga isn’t hard pressed to top any time soon.
The question is — are you surprised? ‘MDNA’ had a non-existent promotional campaign, received mixed reviews, and failed to produced a solid hit single for the 53 year old.

Loving all the Madonna fans suddenly saying “nobody cares about album sales anymore”. Really? I can guarantee you would not have been saying that if MDNA had been a smash. Madonna has released some great albums in her time, this isn’t one of them. Its got f*** all to do with her age and everything to do with the fact that for most of the last decade she has been chasing “yoof” trends instead of setting them as she used to do, she is trying to appeal to a younger crowd that are not interested in watching a 53 year old woman prance around in hotpants singing really generic dance songs. She has also alienated some of her long-time fans with this latest offering, they didn’t care about her age at all – just quality music. She shows promise with Falling Free and Gang Bang, Masterpiece is a reasonable ballad, but the rest of it is pretty dire. The less said about the two lead singles the better. As for stealing music, I want them to come down hard on musix thieves as there is NO excuse when downloads are so cheap, if money is an issue then you only need to wait a couple of months to pick albums up much cheaper. MDNA is already being sold in the UK at £4 for a download. As for Gaga and Best Buy, those albums did not count towards her chart position ;o)

I saw through Madonna right from the start of her promotional campaign and I actually expected things to pan out this way. Madonna finds a way to manipulate or get around things (hit singles, concrete album sales) and she’s always striking when she’s conjured up some brillant plan of trickery. Sometimes it works, but sometimes there are holes in it and this particular strategy exposes Madonna in the worst way. Madonna breaks all these records that people can’t track. Her tour is SOLD OUT supposedly(but you can still purchase tickets). Her single broke records with ‘GMAYL’ and had the highest airplay(first week) debuting in the top 10, then falling to #39. Her album ‘MDNA’ had sold a record breaking amount allegedly on Itunes in presales, then it sales 46k in week 2. There’s a pattern with Madge. She’s come up with a scam and just ultimately stole a #1 record from Lionel.
I wasn’t interested in commenting on this post, but I see that some of these people are quite contradiciting in their comments about album sales. It’s funny that all of a sudden album sales are so insignificant, yet we measure every other artists by their sales figures. Beyonce’s ‘4’ was examined month by month until it went platinum. Gaga’s first week was a big deal. Heck Madge’s peers, Janet and Mariah last albums are labelled flops because of their sales totals, but people go mute when you address the sales of ‘Hard Candy’. ‘MDNA’ seems to be heading down that same path also. smh . I think Madonna’s ego was getting the best of her, apparently for no reason at all.

@ Pop Royalty I actually agree that the legends don’t have anything to prove, but none of them should be resorting to gimmicks and underhanded tricks so beneath them at such a late stage in their careers (or any). If your a real Queen in the game you make quality music that speaks for itself. Your reputation is far more important than compromising your artistry and status for a quick meaningless gain. Madonna will always be one of the top women in music, she should just stop being so desperate.

I agree with you on alot of points. But if those same points u use against other legends (I.e. Janet, Mariah, etc) then , you show your full of it.

the thing lots of ppl in here fail to realize is that they are just music listeners , it is not your job to criticize artists , you are only allowe dto like/dislike/hate their projects , nothing more , nothing less. and i’m a 90’s kid and nothing worng with that , but i have all of the albums of ” mariah carey , whitney , Mj , celine dion and MADONNA” , and that’s because you need to know and educate yourself about the past if you want to cope up with the future.

Madonna just pisses me off cause she chat much s*** to create buzz. That used to work and it was great in her prime. At this point people want a bit more maturity and good music to speak to them. Not her acting like she’s still 25 and crazy still. It just tarnishes her crown a bit IMO.

I don’t expect Madonna to be a nun! I knew from the beginning she is a rude b****. But she needs tone it down or old fans like me, will leave, and younger fans will see it as desperate. A legend should not serve mediocre material w/ a side of hate. It smacks of desperation. Even if she through her shade after she made and and had a GREAT album and sales. I would have LOVED that, but she set herself up to be clowned.
If she would just concentrate on her lane(instead of shade) the outcome would have been way better than 2nd wk 66k. I’m just sayin.
