Hot Topic: What Makes An Icon?

Published: Sunday 24th Jun 2012 by David

Icon.

A word thrown about fans up and down the blogosphere, recent years have seen a number of today’s acts awarded the title, accurately and inaccurately.

From Justin (both of them) to Rihanna, there are very few performers whose careers haven’t been billed as ‘potentially iconic’ if not already ‘legendary’.

But what does it mean? To be iconic?

One thing, an image or depiction, that represents something else of greater significance through literal or figurative meaning, usually associated with religious, cultural, political, or economic standing.

So, taking the above into consideration, we ask you…

What does it take to be an icon?

And which of today’s stars have it within them to be iconic?

Weigh in below…

To be an ICON one has to spark debate among a number of topics…. change the way we think and see something/ influence an ERA of some sort…… when you look back at a time period there at the fore front of it and are/ have set the bar or tone for the rest to follow… an icon is someone who is immortal and there legacy lives on forever.. for example Mrs. Marylin Monroe or Michael Jackson… they still sell products in death….. an icon is someone who doesnt go looking to be one they just are by simply being themselves which is “GREAT/TALENTED”

Britney Spears and Beyonce are well on their way to being Icons. They’ll just gne down in History for to different things. To me Britney is madonna and beyonce is m.j. Britney will go down for her stage presence and controversy. Beyonce will go down for her raw talent and her abillity to stay chin up above her peers. No one today is respected more than her, while bey does have memorable songs she will have to upgrade her catalog to M.J. so will Britney to be Madonna. They didn’t come in the industry trying to be any one else that’s why they are the 1st BRITNEY SPEARS and BEYONCE. They’ll never be another them.

    • EJ June 24, 2012

Nicki MInaj can definitely become an icon! She has the rap game on lock and has truly made one of the biggest break throughs known to the music industry’s history. Not to mention, she has become the most successful female rapper and the most electrifying female artist of ALL TIME. Although people may not want to give her credit, she IS on her way to becoming an icon. Period…

  3. S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

Attention to my comment, what i’m gonna say it’s just the truth, even if some of you will not agree with it, I respect a lot artist but some of them were not so smart, i’m talking about MJ, Janet, Prince, Whitney, ect,,, what makes and artist ICONIC is their Determination, Ambition, charisma, intelligence and the ability to manipulate the media in your favor.
Michael Jackson let the press control his career, while Madonna use the press in her favor, it’s not about talent, not about being talented, it’s about being consistent, throughout your career, the press has been criticizing Madonna throughout her career, and in the 80’s declared her a has been, still today they keep talking about it in good or bad but still they’re talking about her, people do not talk about Janet Jackson or Prince, as much i love them i have to say Madonna is the most consistent artist of all times, more even than Michael Jackson or Sir Paul MaCcartney, artists like Beyonce and Lady Gaga are in their way to became Iconic, in 10 years they would be legends of our times, that’s the truth but I’m not sure if their careers will be relevant after 30 years, that’s is something hard to do even for Men, It takes a Real man to fill Madonna shoes.

    • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

And we have to separate Iconic looks in people and iconic figures, for example Marilyn Monroe was more the image, while people lile Martin L, King was his figure, someone who fight for something, someone who has a Cultural impact in our society.

    • b**** June 22, 2012

beyonce already has a carrier of 15 years being nr 1 and she still manage to sell and be a millionair and be talented and be on the covers and be the higst payed entertainer and sold over more then 180 million records and maybe more now has 6 box office nr 1s has golden globe nomination and 16 grammys 48 nominations 6 nr 1 albums and YES WITH DESTINY’S CHILD SHE WAS THE LEADER THE WRITER THE FACE AT THE END AND THE ONE WHO PROVED TO KEEP GETTING MORE SUCCSES SOLO SO IT MEANS THEY HAD SUCCSES BECAUSE OF HERE CAUSE ACTUALLY SHE SELLS MORE NOW 😉 BUT LETS GO ON AT THE END WE CAN KEEP GOIN ON OF THE THINGS SHE ARCHIEVED OK AND SHE IS ONLY 30 AND NEVER HAD A SCANDAL SO IT MEANS SHE IS RESPECTED TWO 😉 I THINK YOU CAN PUT HER IN A NEW KIND OF ICON STATUS CAUSE THE ICON STATUS THAT SHE ALREADY GOT 😉

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

What is your problem, Beyonce is not be iconic yet, you guys want to give everything to her, she’s gonna be Iconic but never in the same pedestal that The Beatles, Elvis Presley, MJ and Madonna are.

      • JER June 22, 2012

Never had a scandal? GURL BYE

  4. Benron June 22, 2012

As much as Rihanna is shaded for her “360 contract” That will get her to be an Icon faster than anyone, you cannot leave while you are not Iconic then retuurn, no, if you leave then return you will probably flop, very very hard! Rihanna is on the road to being an Icon, but you never know, she might take a detour or a wrong exit!

  5. dfdsf June 22, 2012

    selfrespect!

  6. Benron June 22, 2012

Lady Gaga is on artist who I think is just a fad, she will fade away, and be a mini-icon!

    • Miao June 22, 2012

She is an icon of this generation! U like it or not, SHE IS! Three albums out and doing her STADIUM tour, that is something only iconic artist did or do! It’s fair to admit some things!

      • Benron June 22, 2012

She is not doing a stadium tour, she is not the icon of Our generation please direct yourself to Beyonce, even though I hate that fake baby lady. Lady Gaga is father from Iconville than Rihanna, and Katy perry (hint both have number one singles which makes them very popular on the radio, and didnt only get a number one album cuz it costed a dollar!

      • Miao June 22, 2012

Don’t be so pressed. It’s ok!

      • BALOO June 24, 2012

I agree with Benron. I do not see a speck of iconic status in Lady Gaga whatsoever. She is nothing more than a joke and quite honestly a disgrace to music as a whole. There are other artists in our generation who have a much better chance of becoming actual iconic figures. For e.g. Adele and Bruno Mars. Those two are well on their way of earning the title of “icon”. An icon is someone who inspires and influences many people in many positive ways and creating that authentic, harmonious atmosphere, like MJ, Prince, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, etc. I just do not see a how a human being dressed in meat and all kinds of exotic, f***** up s*** can be seen as “iconic”. Just a load of b******* as far as I’m concerned, but hey, that’s just my opinion. No sugar-coating or waffle whatsoever.

  7. Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

An Icon means that you stand for something. A brand, a time period, and an aesthetic.

That doesn’t mean a bunch of top 20 hits and HAWKING perfume. That’s mistaking the FOREST for the TREES. It’s only a part of being iconic.

An Icon of music is a person who is successful critically and commercially for at least 15 years. (provided they don’t die first like Tupac or Amy Winehouse). Someone who takes what came BEFORE them and makes it THERE OWN.

    Icons
    Janet
    MJ
    Madonna
    Elvis
    Tupac
    John Lennon/Beatles
    Amy Winehouse
    The Doors
    Queen
    James Brown
    Fiona Apple
    Grace Jones

People like those I’ve mentioned above.

Beyonce is on her way. Only thing she’s short on is the quality of her music.

    NOT ICONS
    Lady Gaga
    Rihanna
    J.Lo
    Ke$sha
Katy Perry (like her, but not yet!)
    Kylie Minogue
    Cheryl Cole
    Lana Del Rey
    Adele

    • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

      Prince also an ICON

      • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

        NOT an ICON
        Nicki Minaj

        like it or not
Lil Kim in her former days

        ICON

    • b**** June 22, 2012

MADONNA AS HAS NO TALENT IN SIGNING SORRY SHE ICON YESS SO SHUT THE F*** UP !AMY WINEHOUSE FO REAL B****** ? YESS BUT BEYONCE HAS F****** WAY MORE IMPACT DO I REALLY NEED TO SAY THIS STOP SHADING DONT WAITH TILL THE GIRL IS DEAD ACCEPT SHE ALREADY IS STOP COMPARE HER TO GAGA RIHANNA OR WHATEVER CAUSE THEY NOWHERE CLOSE TO HER FACE IT B****** DAMN YEAH THEY DOIN GUUD FOR SURE NO SHADE BUT DONT COMPARE DEM TO DEM IDOLS OK 😉

      • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

No need to type IN ALL CAPS. Keeping it 100 isn’t shading.

Madonna isn’t a talented singer. She’s a talented show-woman, dancer and creative force. We can see that because she’s got several copies of her running around right now. She’s an Icon of music, and she change the game, whether you or anyone else likes it or not.

Beyonce is a ball of talent, she’ll get to Icon status, especially if she releases a great album in the near future. She hasn’t had more impact than Madonna, mostly because she’s younger and a black woman, so lets be honest about that.

Amy Winehouse was a genius songwriter, unique, a multi-instrument artist with an as-yet un-duplicatable voice. YES, she is an icon. Yes, she was critically and commercially successful. Yes, she is far superior to the talented industry beast Adele. Now that’s saying something.

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

        Auntie_Jackie.
Madonna is a talented singer, just because she don’t have the voice of Whitney of Mariah doesn’t mean she is not a telented singer, she plays the guitar, she co-wrote and produced almost all her songs, so Bruce Springsteen is not a telented Musician just because he’s voice is not like Frank Sinatra’s voice, guys you need to stop calling Madonna untalented, seriously at this point it sounds almost ridiculous to say she has no talent.

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

        Sorry for my typos.

      • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

        @ Suicide_Blonde

I love Madonna, I think she can carry a tune, but would you say that’s a talented singer? You don’t have to be Mariah or Whitney, but I do think you should be above average at something to be considered talented. Is that unfair? Madonna, to me, doesn’t have voice that is above average in the general population. She can play guitar and can write songs and she can dance–I think that’s awesome. She’s also creative with art direction and fashion (NO she didn’t have a stylist when she first came out!) she was actually putting herself together.

Again, that’s why she’s got carbon copies of her herself running around, because she’s an icon. I think she’s talented, but not in the area of voice.

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

        Auntie_Jackie
I think Madonna has a very versatile voice, she is definitely to the average, she has great live vocals and bad live vocals just like Whitney and Mariah even has, once again nothing exceptional but she definitely can sing.

    • Benron June 22, 2012

I have a problem with you even feeling the need to mention lana del rey is not an Icon, who even thought she was even close?

      • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

        @ Benron

It wasn’t to shade her, but just to point out that fans always throw around Icon like it can apply to anyone. What’s the problem with being truthful on this board? She’s not an icon…

        @ Suicide_Blonde

I feel what you are saying. Sooo is your name from song S****** Blonde?

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

        Auntie_Jackie.
Yes! is in reference to INXS song.

kylie minogue is a damn icon. that’s a FACT , what happened to you @auntie ?

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

I agree with you Pop, Kylie is not big in America but she is a global Icon.

      • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

I love Kylie! But it’s the America thing, so I guess in discussing an icon we’re talking about global sway, too. That was not to shade her because she’s amazing.

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 22, 2012

        sorry , But JANET for example wasn’t that big internationally like her peers ” M, MC , W , C ” , so we gonna stop calling her icon now ? …. 😯 😯

are we being racist or what ? so just because it is not US it is not iconic ?

        explain please.

and kylie is known every f*****’ where , i’m sure of that. and her MV and stuffs INSPIRE almost everybody starting from madonna.

Kylie is the only one i can safely put against Madonna artistic-integrity wise. she’s a damn Icon. F*** this s*** already.

    • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 22, 2012

and do NOT put kylie with damn Ke$ha and other Beginners , you make her seem as she’s a basic b**** who is one the lane of the “tik tok” singer or something , that was so disrespectful @Auntie , just don’t do it.

      • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

Lol, alright already, Kylie counts! She’s an industry vet…but I don’t think she broke in American because we already had Madge. Janet’s pretty popular internationally. Don’t sleep on Janet’s global appeal!

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 22, 2012

kewl enough , lemme put it like that tho. :

        janet’s Global appeal = kylie’s Us appeal

    • kelly June 22, 2012

Kylie Minogue is an icon. She has won awards for culture and arts from the french government. She has been at the top for 25 years. Such a shame she is not that big in the USA.

    • zania June 24, 2012

      I agree with you 100%

    • BALOO June 24, 2012

AUNTIE_JACKIE I agree with all the artists you placed as icons and not icons. however, i would say Adele is on track to becoming an icon. She might not be now, but she’s on track.

    • Rogue June 30, 2012

      Jemi Hendrix, Bob Marley???

  8. YouDoRealize… June 22, 2012

To be honest its not about talent. If any about talent its more about 10% of being a icon. In short if you can BE someone who is remembered for years and decades after your death you are an icon. Really time can tell. Marilyn wasn’t VERY talented but shes still being copied and influencing artists today. She MJ, and even Madonna ( even though in reality people are thisclose to being done with her.) are the epitome of an icon. They might not have had all the talent but they sure as hell will never be forgotten. Thus making them Icons. Beyonce, Gaga, Rihanna ( even though in reality people are thisclose to being done with her.) and Britney are all on their way to becoming Icons. You have to change an era and have a time known as the year/era/decade of ” Insert Icon Name Here” Please respond to me cause I wanna hear what you guys think about my analysis.

    • Benron June 22, 2012

*People are close to being done with Beyonce, not Rihanna

      • YouDoRealize… June 22, 2012

Says who? Last time I checked it was Rihanna always in contoversy. Beyonce is respected by the mass. Not 8 year old girls and their soccer moms who only know the clean songs she makes ie. WFL not her raunchy ones ie. Cockiness. Oh yeah and her music stopped selling like GGGB since she started slapping that Parental Advisory.

      SHADE

rihanna changes her image every album, and though her hair style changes too dosent mean that she not being creative, compare gggb to rated r to loud to talk that talk you get totally differnt sounds and looks… to me the only female artist i can see becoming icons in the future are beyonce, britney–(who both kinda are now TO ME) rihanna, gaga, and xtina

  12. soulmusiclover June 22, 2012

i don’t know exactly what makes an artist an icon but i know these artists are icons: mariah carey, whitney houston, amy winehouse, beyonce, lauryn hill, adele(she s on her way), madonna(like it or not), britney spears, usher, kanye west

  13. Jason Santoro June 22, 2012

To me an Icon is someone that actually pushes issues, that change the industry. That change the way we see music and videos. Not just someone with a pretty face that just happens to sing and has a hit single. To me the only Icons that there will ever be are Madonna and Michael Jackson simply because they change the music industry and change the way we see music and music videos. Other artist may be cute and sell but not like Madonna or Michael Jackson. They were and are in a whole different arena. No one will ever match what they have done. Icons Madonna and Michael Jackson.

  14. scars June 22, 2012

    true legends

    MJ
    ABBA
    elvis
    madonna
    whitney
    britney
    the beatles
    nirvana

    • QUEEN JANET! June 23, 2012

Britney is out of place in that list smh

  15. NaturalBeauty June 22, 2012

#1 singles & fast food tracks do not make you an icon! Making an impact & remaining relevant for years to come makes you an icon. Britney is iconic because she made the biggest impact in Pop music since Madonna, Beyonce is iconic because she is one of the few artists who is accepted & respected by legends & her peers. She posses undeniable talent that no other Pop star has. Both of those women have been relevant for 15 years. So if you ask me who is iconic in our generation, Britney & Beyonce.

    • Lax June 22, 2012

A cultural icon can be a symbol, logo, picture, name, face, person, building or other image that is readily recognized and generally represents an object or concept with great cultural significance to a wide cultural group. A representation of an object or person, or that object or person may come to be regarded as having a special status as particularly representative of, or important to, or loved by, a particular group of people, a place, or a period in history.
In the media, many well-known manifestations of popular culture have been described as “iconic”. Some writers say that the word is overused.
And its over used here on the Grape, too
Rihanna is a candidate and shes working on it for sure she brings a cultural to the fore front shes Caribbean.

    • kelly June 22, 2012

Britney more. She defines that 90’s pop era – bit like the spicegirls. Beyonce is just a talented black RNB singer who has sold a lot.

  16. coco June 22, 2012

So i creep ….i crew up on that s*** before i even had a boy!!!!!

  17. S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

In music terms, people need to realize that Pop Music before MJ and Madonna was the type of songs that Frank Sinatra sang, it was called Traditional Pop, MJ and Madonna changed the way Pop Music was they incorporate Disco, New Wave and Rock all in one and it’s what we all know as POP MUSIC today, MJ and Madonna are the biggest influences for male and female singers, every boy wants to be like MJ and every girl wants to be like Madonna, usher, JT, Breezy, Jason Derulo, Britney, Christina, Lady Gaga ect.. ect…..this is a Music site so we need to concentrate in singers, the biggest Icons in Music are:

1- The Beatles: they set a standard for Rock bands or groups.
2- Elvis Presley: he set a standard for those who wants to be a solo Rock star.
3- Michael Jackson: he is the definition of what every Pop or R&B male singer aspire to be.
4- Madonna: her name herself is the definition of popularity, Pop Culture, irreverence and a role model for those female singers who wants to rule the world with their free sexuality and s*** image.

    • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

      That is correct!

There are several people that came before these icons and inspired them, but were not in “pop music”, exactly.

      MJ: James Brown, Jackie Wilson
      Elvis: Jackie Wilson
The Beatles: Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly
      Madonna: Nancy Sinatra

      • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

I don’t know what’s the debate? Beyonce is clearly an Icon. I don’t say this because I stan for her talent, I draw this conclusion base on the work she’s put in. I don’t know how some people fix their mouths to award certain individuals (Adele, Amy, Gaga, etc) Icon status and not B. Some of you guys act as if she’s still getting through her first five years in the music industry.

People can’t keep incorporating their own personal feelings into everything Beyonce. People may not care for what Britney has to offer these days, but you can’t deny her everything that she’s earned. In the early part of her career her sales were ridiculously huge. She made her impact.

Anyone that make claims that Bey is an Icon is completely justified in doing so. She’s a standout artist of the last decade (2000’s). She was the top decade artists. She was consistent (3 multi platinum solo efforts and 3 multi platinum group albums), 16 Grammy’s, 100 Million + grossing tour, the most top 10’s in that decade (14, tying with Rihanna), 2 dance crazes (Crazy In Love, S.L.) and just to add insult to injury she’s near the 1billion mark at the box office. This is not an Icon? She’s a diva that dominated every market and that’s not enough? It’s enough for so many of the lengends that praise B, that don’t seem to mind passing her the torch.

What’s even more impressive is how she’s still going platinum 15 years later. She’s remaining relevant.

You have to cross Icon status to become a legend. You have a better case denying her of being a legend, but Icon’s been checked off the list.

Besides selling a whole lot of records, what song has she done that will always be remember and played by our great grand kids, what impact and change she did with music like MJ, Madonna, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson. selling products doesn’t make you a icon. Ashanti and Nelly sell clothes and perfume. What has Beyonce done in her career to change music or songs that we all can remember in her catalog.

an ICON is someone who is instantly associated with a particular time frame, recognizable in association, subject, or genre, etc. An “80’s icon.”

Cyndi Lauper is an 80’s icon. She defined the sound, the image and style, and attitude of the mid 80’s. She’s instantly associated with gooky outfits, different hair colours, her odd speaking style, and her handful of big hits. An icon is unique, different. Cyndi Lauper defined the mid early 80’s new wave pop era. She’s associated SPECIFICALLY with a certain era she clearly owned. She’s an ICON

Now take BeYAWNce. Someone who isn’t an icon. BeYAWNce isn’t associated with any particular time frame, NOR is her style or input defined to any era otherwise Ashanti, Jennifer Lopez, Tweet, Amerie, and other girls would all be considered icons too. BeYAWNce is known for flashy live performances, big weave, wind machines, and poppin c******. Just like three dozen other females. That’s why she isn’t iconic or associated with any particular era, or sound that she represents.

You say Mariah Carey and people think short skirts, big hair and big vocals, her early work and transition into hip-hop, the dreamlover, fantasy, honey, and heartbreaker videos, big ballads, rap features. All these things that make Mariah Carey iconic. They defined the era of her career and the 90’s when there were a few times Mariah was a trend setter.

BeYAWNce has only folowed Mariah Carey’ and Janet Jackson’s iconic paths and forumlas. It’s only the YOUNGER CHILDREN who think BeYAWNce is iconic because they don’t know and never experienced LIFE that is Madonna, Mariah, and Janet. These teenage and young twenty-something gorls you need to get your license and your library card renewed, sit back tight and keep your seat warm.

    • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

Um, Beyonce is going to be an icon because she took what came before her and brought it to a new level. She’s better compared to Tina Turner than Janet, Madonna or Mariah. She’s still working, so you don’t know what she’s going to be associated with, you can only say that about Mariah, Janet and Madonna in HINDSIGHT. We aren’t even out of her era yet, if she will have one associated with her.

You sure are nasty about it. Like it or not, Beyonce is on her way to being an icon.

    • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 22, 2012

      • zania June 24, 2012

How is she an Icon, because of awards, selling albums. What impact she did to change the music industry, like MJ, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney . What song will we have to remember her by, that our grand kids will be singing.

    • kelly June 22, 2012

Beyonce is not an icon. Britney spears is, because she defined the 90’s pop era. Beyonce has defined no era, now she seems a little irrelevant.

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 23, 2012

sorry , but beyonce defined the 90’s R&B era as well. this alone will make her an icon.

  21. Benron June 22, 2012

Rihanna, is an example of an modern dayIcon, since it isn’t twenty years from now we don’t know if she will be remember if she will be remember, but we can look at old Icons because they’re old and we remember them.

    Modern Icons
    Justin Beiber (BARFING but true)
    Rihanna
    Lady Gaga
Katy Perry (At least for now)
Nicki Minaj (Just for female plastic rap, not in general)
Eminem and Jay-Z are rap Icons

end of story, Add Kanye if you want but the rest of your faves are not Iconic If Beyhive member are wondering why she is not on that list its because her “breaks” have jsut made her more irrelevant, everyone knowing your name is no longer iconic, because everyone knows the names of many other un-iconic artist. If she picks up with her album “5” then she can jump back into modern Icons, if not then she is on the road to retiremen, population Camel-Z and Her adopted son!

    • Auntie_Jackie June 22, 2012

We’ll need about 15 years space to determine if these people are icons.

Popular, that’s what those people are. I think all of them will disappear without a trace after they have enough flops.

    • kelly June 22, 2012

LOL LOL you must be under 10. None of those people are modern day icons. Emim is an icon.

  22. ARFA June 22, 2012

  23. MH June 22, 2012

To be an icon I really think you have to influence an entire generation and the music business as a whole. I really look at people like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Madonna as the true icons of the music industry because they opened so many doors for other artist. Michael helped turn music videos into art and promotion and opened doors for African-Americans to crossover (music wise), Whitney helped open many doors for African-American women in the music industry (in regards to crossover appeal) and Madonna helped women in the music industry to embrace their sexuality and not be afraid to explore it and market it.

  25. POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 22, 2012

    WOW , finally a decent POST , Just WOW , i’m GLAD !!

hmmm , good one , what it takes to be an icon ?

i think you should first bring something new and YOU-nique to the table to make you iconic. like those ICONS u mentioned in this Post. “Minus GAGA cuz she’s 3 years experienced and still got a long way to go even herself/her manager said that”.

second : you should be appealing to People and to stay Real and versatile , try new things , step out of your comfort zone , and to have some type of a talent. but it is not obligatory to be an icon.
but to sum it Up : to bring something new/YOU-nique to the table and to be devoted and dedicated to it , that’s it !!

Beyonce Is in ICON , so is Britney , shakira is also a notable one not to be missed , JLo is a latina icon , Adele WILL BE an Icon anyway cuz she’s something Unique and distinctive and just REAL , Gaga can be an Icon one day , Rihanna can be too if she stopped being a Classic C*** , Katy can be if she stayed as smart as she is now and stopped following what is trendy, anyhow whoever bring something new to the table and dedicate their life to it then he/she is an icon in my eyes. some focused on the vocals ” whitney , mariah , celine, aretha , adele, etc .. ” some focused on the visuals ” madonna ” some focused on to use shock tactics and gimmicks to make a statement considering their art ” gaga , nicki “, some focused on fashion and style “rihanna , grace jones , etc …” , some focused on dancing and choreographies and performing” janet , MJ , ” , some liked to focus on them all ” beyonce , britney , J.lo ” etc …….. U know !!

    • kelly June 22, 2012

JLO can be classed as a Latin entertainer, beauty / booty and Icon. Yes, She will bet that classic latin that they will talk about in 50 years.

      Britney – pure icon.

Beyonce – not an icon because she has not defined an era.

Adele….she might be the nest Dido – AKA 20 million selling debut LP, then flop and disappear.

Gaga – not so sure, might fade out.

Katy peryy? Never, she is another Xtina.

MJ would have outsold Elvis if we count what the Jackson 5 has sold, i’m not saying she wasnt the start of the group, because in every band or group there is a star.

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 22, 2012

i really don’t care PAUL. i just do.

sales is not what make u an icon, it is what you do is all what matters 😉

but my opinion on your point is : MJ was a part of the jackson 5 , so adding their sales to his sales won’t be a crime as well , he was there when they made those hits still. so …..

the same can be applied to Beyonce and her band.

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

        POP ROYALTY.
No because, it’s a group, everybody brings something to the table. So that mean Kelly and Michelle have sold almost what Beyonce has sold in her solo career, NO right.

      • POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) June 22, 2012

i don’t have any problem if you say Kelly and michelle gonna be sharing the sales together “55 millions” , i’m not mad at all. they all contributed ” with dif extents” in making the group. and the hits which resulted in selling those amounts of Cds , so …

but we know who was the boss as well , so where is the problem again ?

      • S****** Blonde June 22, 2012

        POP ROYALTY.
75 million records sold is not enough, why exaggerate?, Warner Bros records says Madonna has sold 500 million records WW but people want 300 million records, again is not enough those 300 million records sold, just saying.

Marlyn Monroe, Ali, Princess dye and Marley Are Iconic. It has a lot to do with what you bring to the world stage that is so Uniquely different that it stands out no matter what. And guess what Rihanna could end up fitting the bill because people see her as not One Of us. She cam from a ordinary family she came from very humble beginning and the things that seperates her from many is that she is /has succeeded aganist all odds. Many who like Jimmi Hendrix, John Wayne, Michael Jordan and others has came to the fore front and succeeded aganist all odds.

An icon is some who made an impact on a certain time period in pop culture. In this new generation (since the 2000s) the rising icons would have to be Brittany Spears, Beyoncé, Eminem, Kanye West, Rihanna & Alicia Keys. Brittany redefined pop music and she set the standard for it in the 2000s. Beyoncé reset the standards and she carried “RnB” since 2003.Beyoncé also stands for female empowerment and that is one of her movements in pop culture. Beyoncé has been praised by LEGENDS ranging from MJ to TINA TURNER to MARIA STRIVER. Beyoncé is one of the most honored artist of this generation weather you hate her or not Beyoncé is an ICON and will end up a legend if she play her cards right. Eminem is the top selling artist of the 2000s and his movement in rap has been extraordinary. He made it okay to be whte and rap. Kanye West is iconic because he created “good guy” rap. Kanye proved that there’s more to rap about than drugs, give, and gangster stuff. And he influenced a lot of new rappers such as Drake and Kid Cudi. Rihanna has the potential to also be a icon. Rihanna is the biggest selling digital singles artist of the 2000s. While Rihanna may lack vocal ability and dance skills, she the ability to sell hits with her personality and is some what like a modern Madonna. Alicia Keys has really maintained R&B/Soul throughout the 2000s. No other artist has had the ability to sell r&b/soul without bringing in pop and she will be remember for that Nd looked up to by new so acts to come. Another notable artist is Brandy. Brandy is looked up to by so many new r&b artist and she is terrible underrated because of her sales. And Mariah Carey is a legend who has a career that has spade over decades!

there’s a huge difference between an icon and legend.. i see alot of people confusing the two

a legend makes a huge impact in the music world, not an icon

    anybody can become an icon,

not everybody has what it takes to become a legend.

you dont have to have a great voice to become an icon..to be an icon, you have to have something about you that stands out….either fashion, voice, ect

like i said, any idiot can become an icon

  43. Benron June 22, 2012

Look BeyHive, the Rihanna Navy wasn’t gonna take are gloves of but you asked for it.

Beyawnce and her chicken grease wigs are not Even close to Iconic, she is more of a gimmick than Rih’s We found love. Don’t get it, here lets break it down,

The cellutlite p**** popper make a “girl group” where he manipulative father purposely pushed her forward and gave HER msot of the money instead of the other too glorified bakup dancers/singers. Than the big hype was the h** wen’t solo, so she lived of of that. Ten she used her song with Jay-z to climb back to fame.

But by then things weren’t go good for The c****** who married Jay-z For more attention, 5 years and only 2 albums wasn’t helping her, Rihanna the new girl was stealing her grown so she “changed her identity” To Sasha Soon to be flop and made the most generic dance TRASH ever “single ladies” and got a couple other hits.

Now Be-wannabe-say tried to recreate single ladies with Who dont RUN THE WORLD (FLOPS) and all of her singles failed to be hits or pick up, so this h** went to MOONBUMP.COM and purchased a defective baby bump and paraded it around to promote her new album 4CLOSURE which FLOPPED.

Your Trashy demon-possed fake ass pompous h** cannot be an icon, all she does is copy people and say the “inspired” her. INSPIRED HER TO DO WHAT STEAL THEY’RE S***. tHIS AKE-ASS H*** STANS NEED TO SIT DOWN ON HER TRAIN TO FLOPVILLE!

      I laughed after reading this…..

but as much as I think beyonce is a fraud in the music,

i will say shes an icon..granted she got that trought lying, stealing and faking..

but the broad is an icon..

whos never going to become a legend….not while all the impact she”S made has being done before….NOPE

  44. Ratedxxx(TEAM “REAL” BAD BISHES) June 22, 2012

just because u have a number 1 album or alot of number ones, doesnt mean you made an impact in the music world….

to made an impact u have to bring something new to the table…having a number 1 album is nothing new, having 14 grammys, is nothing new

lets use mariah carey..shes a legend….how?….her voice and she made a huge impact, how? she made R&B ft rappers, popular..she made pop ft rappers popular.

still today r&b ft rappers and pop ft rappers are popular..

now britney another legend, next to the queen of pop throne….she made a huge impact in the pop world…she made t*** pop, which is still popular to this day, relevant

  45. Perry Power June 22, 2012

I feel like Beyonce has reached iconic status but its too early for anyone to call her a legend still. Legends, to me dont earn the title until at least 20 years in the game. Beyonce was an icon from her Destiny Childs days; the group was iconic. Since shes had a successful solo career her icon status has moved on with her.

And I do think Katy Perry has reached icon status with the Teenage Dream era. She inspires thousands and her music reaches millions across the world wide. She certainly has the hits, sales, and records to be an icon. She is there IMO.

    • Benron June 22, 2012

      YES! AGREED! Ur impartial!

  46. Perry Power June 22, 2012

I also think the Good Girl Gone Bad era made Rihanna an icon. Your lying if you think shes not a fashion icon. How many girls do you know dyed their hair red after Rihanna did? How many girls do you know shaved the side of their heads after Rihanna did (even if Cassie did it first)?

P.S Im shocked at how many people ignored Christina Aguilera’s name when making icon lists.

  47. Lax June 22, 2012

Some writers say that the word is overused

And don’t even get me started on the stolen Billboard performance, singing someone elses song for the President and trying to swagger jack “Good Girl Gone bad”. Look, she is an idiot. Without her daddy to help her thru the 4 era, she went to flop-zone population HER AND CIARA!

She will NEVER be an ICON EVER b****** get it thru your mind. So what if she can dance and lyp-sync to her obvious backtrack at the same time, its all the same moves anyway. WITHOUT HITS Or anything intresting to offer NOBODY GIVES A DAMN!

Her cheap tacky blonde wigs and wannabe white skin bleack can sit the f*** down, whats next, is she gunna catch a disease that the media will coincedentally become obsessed with. BEYONCE IS over, MAYBE IF, she was in the studio LIKE RIHANNA, her career could be revived, but she is too busy choking on Jay-z’s camel D***.

Rihanna is s***, pretty, fun, vibrant and relatable. Aint nobody relating to eyonce as she talks about the problems of buying 30,000 lacefronts over the internet. That h** needs to STFU.

Beyonce’s career is like a weave, sooner or later, it gets stank and you have to replace it. She kept one in too long during her break and now the Texas southerner has alopecia, her hair is falling out like MAD

Queen of POP? More Like Queen of the Sand!

  53. mary-lou June 22, 2012

I love some of the questions you ask unlike many of the garbage media and music blogs I read. I love that you wake us up from our brainwashed states because music back in the day artists worked a lot harder and longer compared today’s artist whom we phrase as icons in only 4-5years when you have Madonna and Janet Jackson who have been transforming and setting trends and breaking moulds for decades. So I feel that an icon is someone who can really stay in this business for the long haul and sustain our attention while being able to sell more than enough music that is evolving in indifference. Like you said people around the world own their own blogs with the freedom to express and I’m not against that I’m an avid blogger myself we can paint our own opinions. However it doesn’t mean we’re right. Social networks I think contribute to artist popularity in comparison to the past we can interact with artist and the artist respects our support and gives us the control to determine their next single such as Cheryl Cole. Another example when J.lo allowed her fans to determine the ending to one of her music videos we are implemented into their world domination. Plus how can an individual connect with a nation worth of people online…I’ll tell Nicki Minaj!

I don’t know if all that I’ve said answers the questions but i think these play a big part in the way the internet connects to that. Music now can be downloaded illegally which plays a con for today’s artist being able to sell music like Michael Jackson and the backstreet boys did! So record sells are not as high rising like Chris Brown said not only hip hop is dead so is the music industry in general!?

I have too say I love this question again because my head swirling with thoughts and thinking can I be online icon in 4-5years? hmmmmmmm

Female Icons: Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Lauryn Hil.

  61. Back2Business June 22, 2012

See I can’t with Rihanna stans. I tried to be unbiased, but they are too delusional! Anybody who can say that Rihanna is an icon but Beyonce isn’t is clearly delusional! Beyonce has achieved so much more than Rihanna! Rihanna has never been recognized by legends, never had award shows dedicate segments to her, never has she been asked to perform for presidents and kings;; she has never even performed with legends!! Only thing Rihanna has is singles and the “Navi!” Beyonce is truly an ICON!! Beyonce has been apart of a Presidential campaign, she has promoted child health with the first lady, she has BEEN ASKED to perform for legends, and she has songs with legends! Single Ladies started the biggest dance craze of the 2000s; BEYONCE HAD THE PRESIDENT DOING HER DANCE!! Now on the theft claims! Has any of these claims been proven to be true? NO! UNTIL THEY ARE PROVEN TRUE STFU! &Rihanna also has theft claims against her! & Beyonce has not built nor has she increased her career off of scandals! You can say she bought this and that, but what you can not say is that she bought respect! Rihanna respects the hell out of Beyonce! Rihanna lists Beyonce as one of her influences! And y’all want to say that she wouldn’t be anything without her dad, but in retrospective what would Rihanna be without LA Reid and Jay-Z?? Matthew was her manager, and he got paid to do his job; MANAGE BEYONCE’S CAREER! It doesn’t matter what you think of Beyonce; One thing you KNOW is that she is an ICON!

were not hating on her success. She is just not an Icon and that’s fact! I LOOOOOVE miss RiRi but she doesn’t even have the power it takes to be an icon. EX: Rihanna could not take a break from music go away for 3-4 years and come back with a new album….Madonna, Janet, R,kelly, missy elliott, Prince, MC, those are icons they have the global power to keep people interested. they made albums that to this day people look to for inspiration. That’s an icon.

  64. Benron June 22, 2012

Oh yah, Beyonce performed for the president yay, Oh, whats that you say she sang someone elses song? Oh ok…..

Oh, Beyonce got the milennium award, whats that you say, The billboard awards confessed they made it up JUST FOR HER, after being kicked off air for MANY YEARS, oh it must still be a honor. Just like the president filming a message about her right before her appearance on the exclusive legendary ICARLY

What that? She doesen’t need hits to be relevant on the radio, 4 years of new music fans and she hasn’t been anything to them, to them she is the biggest flop ever, their Idea of sucsess is Gaga, Rihanna, Katy, Kanye, Camel-Z and so on….

Your arguments are as thin as her hair under her horse weave! As 4 gets outsold BY #TTT worldwide Rihanna Dazzles at the grammies and takes home the biggest award at the brits, performs for an olmypic festival and more records pile on to her 120 million + Beyonce piles on her plate. Over eating to gain weight so maybe she can role over the competition this time.

Rihanna is very similar to a train, to be sucsessful in their journey, they have to run over some tracks.
But On the brightside RiRi’s boot print looks all nice and s*** on Beyonce Moo-fasa Mane!

    • Benron June 22, 2012

    • Back2Business June 22, 2012

Lets get real here, At last was a song Beyoncé performed because she made Cadillac Records and it related to the act that “At Last” there was a black president! And the Obama’s have honored her many times weather on tv or through other media forms! Does anyone bring up Rihanna? No because she isn’t thought of highly by the elite! TTT had a #1 SMASH single on he global charts, Nd all it has not even sold 5M WW? Wow some accomplishment. And Beyoncé has sold 100M+ records world-wide with less albums, so again you lose! Rihanna could never take a year off because she’s a dime a dozen and she will be so replaced so quick! Beyonce is the BEST PERFORMER OF THIS GENERATION… What is Rihanna? Her vocals aren’t anything great they’re Actually common. She can’t dance… I guess all she has is singles that she don’t write, produce, or contribute to… Some “artist.” And it seems as tho the Navy is so in love with her but she will put a man who she is not married to, the same man that whipped her ass before her fans… cool 🙂
&Beyoncé doesn’t have to be skinny to be successful! Unlike Rihanna, Beyoncé is in control of her own career and she doesn’t have someone in her ear telling her she constantly has to lose weight!
BTW that digital sales record will soon be snatched by Gaga or Adele or maybe Katy 🙂
*goes to help beyoncé dust her 16 Grammy’s*

      • Benron June 22, 2012

Nobody told Rihanna to lose weight in fact she is tryna gain it back now, in my opinion she lost too much weight to fast and needs to be looked into. Rihanna is teh creative director of her career, she is also in charge of lyrcial direction and has co-wrote over TWENTY SONGS. She is set TO STAR IN 3 MORE MOVIES, AND PRODUCE A NEW T.V SHOW.

Oh and even now I think Rihanna probably the same size as beyonce, she is not “thick anymore lol” she is skinny!

  65. kelly June 22, 2012

Rihanna and Beyonce are not iconic. This is what iconic is: MJ, Madonna, Beatles , Aretha ( rolling stone voted best voice of all time ) Little Richard, Elvis, Em, 2pac, Elton Jonh, Che Guevera, The Eifel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Cleopatra, White house, The Queen, Princess Diana, The pope, Pele, M jordan, Ali, The godfather, Scarface, Marlon Brando, Monroe, Liz Taylor, Mandela, Mother Theresa, MLK, Ghandi, Shakespeare, Coco Cola, Apple, Mikey D, Disney, James Dean, Romeo and Juliet, Edwin Munch art Andy Warhol, Tiger Woods………

Now do you see what real iconic is? Hence why Rir and Beyonce will NEVER EVER EVER EVER REACH THAT.

    • kelly June 22, 2012

Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Audrey Hepburn, Yves saint laurent, Hubert Givenchy all icons. Calvin Klein an icon, Naomi Campbell, Christy, Cindy Crawfrod, Linda, E, Claudia Schiffer, Iman, Twiggy, Christie Brinkly, Kate Moss….all icons.

Herb Ritts PURE ICON,Vidal Sasson, Max Factor ( he was a make up artist ) Ester Lauder all iconic brands, by iconic people. The show, Cheers, very iconic. Pavarotti the opera singer…..David Bowie, James Bond, Marlene Dietriech, Charlie Chaplin, Mickey Mouse ( very iconic, for a rodent )

  67. Try Again June 22, 2012

You can’t copy Beyonce, because Beyonce is a Copy.

Her people are so thirsty to STEAL her a spot with true icons. No her name does not belong in the same sentence as MJ, Aretha, Patti etc

She is a PERFORMER who copies the greats, she is not a great in her OWN right and the industry knows this.

    • Benron June 22, 2012

      cosign!

    • kelly June 23, 2012

Even Sade is more Iconic than Beyonce. You cannot even compare Beyonce to Sade. Also. Rolling stone voted Aretha the greatest voice. The only other voice from the young generation in the list ( which included Donny Hathaway, Solomom Buke, Jackie Wilson, Freddie Mercury ) was Christina Aguilera and Mary J blige. Beyonce was not there and her best days are behind her.

    • Fila back June 26, 2012

      Yes 😀

  68. RoyalKev June 23, 2012

I do think there are a few rules when it comes to declaring someone an Icon.
I’d first expect any true Icon to have atleast 3 commercially successful eras under their belt. If it’s not so much a commercial success it has to be extremely influential eras. It may sound simple, but it’s true, this individual must be considered an “it” person in the industry on atleast 2 occassions (meaning that they’ve ruled the industry at a few points in their careers and was on top). You must also have the time put in (nothing under 15 years).

There’s a bonus (but if added to the equation without some of the other things it still carrys weight) : it doesn’t hurt to have a few record breaking achievements. This one is tricky though, some things matter more than others. Then sometimes people become what I call an honorary legend after having 30 years or more in the industry (they don’t always have the success to match).

There are a few exceptions: Spice Girls, Biggie, MC Hammer and Lady Gaga have 1 era that was so huge that they can be declared a mini -Icon of some sort. Still, this isn’t as significant. It’s like they’re three quarters of the way there.

Legends are often labelled Icons as well (but that’s fine, as long as their given credit for having their legend status).

    Legends:

    Whitney Houston
    MJ
    Prince
    Elvis
    Dionne Warwick
    Janet

Alicia keys is not Iconic to know one. Maybe in the black community, but her name did not define or inspire anything. Usher? LOL Beyonce? Justin Tim? OMG, you are nuts. Lauren hill had one hit LP then went crazy. Not even xtina, who will always be in the shadow of Britney – a real Icon.

Adele is not an Icon and i am from the uk. Amy Wine is not one either – she admitted to copying Sarah Vaugh, Bille Holiday – then she died after 1 smash hit LP.

Riri is not an icon – she is a pop star.

Sade is an Icon. Just so u know

      • Benron June 23, 2012

        Who is Sade?

      • RoyalKev June 24, 2012

        @Kelly , your quite interesting …

Alicia Keys first album sold over 12 million ww, her 2nd album 9 million ww. Did only black people purchase all those albums? She was very mainstream when she broke into the industry with her debut. Usher was the last artist to go diamond before Adele did, what’s the question mark for? Beyonce(Independent Women, S.L.), Lauryn Hill (Killing Me Softly, That Thing) and Justin(Bye, Bye, Bye S*** Back) had HUGE success in groups (solo and in groups).

Also I have Adele and Amy as a mini Icon which I explained <<<<<< Icon

beycopy does not belong on that list

  70. Ziggy Stardust June 23, 2012

A good voice, timeless music, longevity, relatable personality and stage presence are the things in my opinion that makes an icon. The top icon for me personally will always be Michael Jackson. Michael has been in the business since he was 5-years-old, has made timeless music (that’s still being played ’til this day, all the way from when he was a child until adulthood), has filmed ground breaking music videos with choreography that was fresh and original. NO ONE can dance like Michael. People loved his personality, and no one can match his stage presence. There are many other icons as well, but Michael set the bar so high, that it will be hard for ANYONE to match that. As the good ‘ole saying goes, “Always imitated, but never duplicated.”

  71. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) June 23, 2012

The real icons in the music industry are the artists who make the people of the same s** want to be like them and the people of the opposite s** want to f*** them. Then, using the previous as a launching pad, icons evolve musically, they push artistic boundaries and they create controversy without being too caught up at being likeable by the conservative audiences. Icons are never afraid to take risks, so they are allowed to flop, but they get back on their feet bigger and better. That’s MY definition.

With that definition in mind, I think the icons of this generation are Britney, Christina, GaGa and Eminem. Rihanna is getting there slowly but surely. Beyonce would also be getting there if her music was better and if she stepped out of her comfort zone more often.

    • Royalkev June 23, 2012

      @Asap

I have to address you because I usually find myself taking your opinions into consideration (or atleast respecting your position) … but what are you talking about my dear??? Beyonce and Rihanna are closer to Icon status than Gaga would be. Do people want to f*** Gaga? … Not exactly! I’ll give you the whole “be like her” thing (for a good year she made a few artists turn to Dance music after making the genre popular). Now if BTW was a risk, how can we determine if she’s bounced back from it yet? We would have to wait and see what the verdict is after her next era. If this woman fades that will be a little premature. You do realize that would mean she didn’t last 10 years?

According to you, Xtina would be considered an Icon before Bey. I make no arguement against her being declared one, but if we follow your rules wouldn’t she fall a little short? What was her risk album, B2B? … Let’s say it is, for arguement sake. When did she bounce back after that? She didn’t do anything to redeem herself with Bionic.

  72. JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) June 23, 2012

Sorry but among the videos TGJ used in this post I only see 3 true icons:
    MADONNA, MICHAEL and WHITNEY.
The Icon and Legend words are so overused they don´t mean anything these days. Those 3 I named are the only ones who impacted the music world on a wordwide level in an irreversible way

Most people around the world couldn´t care less about what happens with TLC (I´m sure most of wordwide population don´t know who they are). Britney, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls are musical jokes, don´t even know what they are doing in this post. And Beyonce and Gaga are good but they obviously can´t compete with those in the higest status. Oh and Cyndi Lauper is not an icon sorry (and I like some stuff from her)

    • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) June 23, 2012

Ok some people on here are right. Ican can be many people even if they have not talent and all that. I was talking about true legends and true greats. And for that you need talent and a real impact, not just people talking about you on the internet. Only legends on this post are the 3 I named : Michael, Madonna, Whitney

      • Try Again June 23, 2012

        agreed

    • kelly June 23, 2012

I agree. But Britney defined that 90’s pop culture. She was America’s sweetheart gone wrong. She will iconic status based on that.

  73. LA BABY! June 23, 2012

    Beyonde Excellent Singing

    Excellent Dancing

    Stage Commanding

+15 Years of Being on Top of All, as a Solo Artist, or as a Leader of a Band

    Fierceness

    Beauty, Fitness and Female Perfection

    Wealth

    Independance

Being Married to Another Huge Icon, and Sharing over 800$ Million with Him.

Y’already know what I’m talkin’ about.

    • kelly June 23, 2012

Beyonce was not even voted into Rolling Stone ( iconic magazine ) greatest voice. Dancing? She was hardly MJ. Stage presence ? Fierce? Only Naomi and Grace jones have that at icon stage. She is not beauty perfection. That will be liz Taylor, Monroe, Halle, Raquel Welch, Bo Derek, Bond Girls. Bardot 90’s supermodels. They are considered feamle perfection.

Alot of whit people think she is fat. Wealth – even Kim K has wealth.. She married a rich guy? SO….Elin Nordegren married an even richer more iconic guy. Yea…Tiger.

      • LA BABY! June 24, 2012

a Woman that you need to pull more than 667 women and their husbands to the table for. THAT’S ICONIC ENOUGH!!!

  74. Sheltop June 23, 2012

I THINK IT’S FUNNY THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO DISCREDIT JANET JACKSON AS AN ICON!! JANET JACKSON WAS THE FIRST ARTIST TO RECIEVE MTV’S ICON AWARD!!!(BUT SHE’S NOT AN ICON LOL) THE IS ONE OF THE TOP 4 FEMALE MUSICAL ACTS OF ALL TIME AND SHE’S NOT AN ICON??? ALBUMS HAVE MOVED THE WORLD BUT NOT AN ICON? STYLE FOREVER CHANGING AND ALWAY REINVITING HERSELF BUT NOT AN ICON?? OVER 110 MILLION ALBUMS SOLD AND IS NOT AND ICON? LOOK IF YOU DON’T LIKE SOME ONE FINE. BUT DON’T TRY TO DICREDIT THO’S THAT DESERVE THERE TITLE! ICONS: JANET, MADONNA, TONI BRAXTON, LIL KIM, PRINCE, BEETLES, ELVIS, JAY-Z, TUPAC, BIGGIE, WHITNEY, THE CARPENTERS, R-KELLY, LIST GOES ON.

    • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) June 23, 2012

Janet is not one of the 4 biggest female musical acts of all time. Those are Madonna, Mariah, Whitney and Celine. Janet may be the 5th

    • Slay4theonly1 June 24, 2012

      Lil Kim? Bwauhahahaha

  75. Sigh June 23, 2012

Beyonce is an Icon! Of stealing, plagiarism, hype, fakeness. She can share that accolade with Gaga.

  76. Minaj-A-Trois June 23, 2012

Sam, Superbass and Your Love are iconic videos! Nicki is well on her way to becoming iconic, there is no one like her.

  77. ICON June 23, 2012

I Agree with most comments on here an Icon doesnt necessarily have to do with talent, but it is someone who changes the masses of people, and is remembered for generations to come,

I think we are only looking at pop stars and not rappers as well.

Kanye West, Jay Z, Eminemand even Lil wayne will be looked at as ICONs along with

Tupac Biggie, Beyonce, Rihanna, Gaga,–( Whether we like them or now) and I want to even say Usher but IDK.

    • Mobwife June 23, 2012

I think it has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH TALENT! Not media props because they can move a crowd (change a mass of ppl?. This is done by demoting and constantly bad mouthing some acts while promote only positive things about the MEDIA DARLINGS!

I just don’t see how oyu can say Gaga is an ICON as she has done NO MORE THAN MADONNA the person whose style she has stolen! What’s so iconic about that? And I don’t hate Gaga at all. I actually like some of her music!

  78. Mobwife June 23, 2012

What makes an Icon, Legend, King/Queen –> 1) TIME on TASK!

I just can’t believe how some people have only produce 1 or 2 CDs (Nicki Minaj NO SHADE) & are considered ICONS, LEGENDS OR KINGS/QUEENS of a genre? 0_O REALLY?? Michaal Jackson had a 45 year career and stayed active in music until his death. Madonna at 50 has decades in the business as has the multi-talented singer, dancer, actress Janet Jackson! Stevie Wonder, Pattie Labelle, Marvin Gaye, Berry White, Rick James, Blondie, WAR, AWB, Cameo, Parliment Funkadelic, Gil Scott Heron, Janes’ Addiction, George Michael, NIN, STP etc., lets talk about ICONS, LEGENDS, KING & QUEENS of a genre! 🙂

Today, Taylor Swift, Adele, Justine Bieber, Lady Gaga are all LEGENDS, ICONS, KING & QUEENS of a genre! <– Where is the TIME on TASK needed by all to perfect their CRAFT? I guess when you are a MEDIA DARLING loved by the POWERS THAT BE you can be an instant ICON! who well……..

  79. NIKKO June 23, 2012

THE ONLY ICON OF THIS GENERATION IS BRITNEY SPEARS!!

IM SORRY BUT BEYONCE HAS NEVER BEEN ORIGINAL SO I DONT CONSIDER HER AN ICON….

    • Lolax June 24, 2012

      Yessss

    • b**** June 24, 2012

who cares about your opinion lol

  80. Deji June 24, 2012

Please check out Afrodisiac by Teni! She’s a legend in the making! She’s the new Sade! Hot! Follow her on twitter @teniofficial!

  81. t June 24, 2012

I cant at rihoenna stans talking about copying. Name 1 original thing she has done. Her whole career is a copy of beyonce, fefe dobson, and now she jacking rita look. And doesnt this bish have a million dollar lawsuit on her hands for stealing? U bishes are hypocrites. King bey is so good that as ll u can do is accuse her of stealing. Mj was sued a million times but he was still considered the best. No matter what anyone irrelevant opinion is one here, there are still the facts. Beyonce is an icon and she is considered the best of this generation. Her peers/legends opinions trumps the opinions of delusional 12 yr old rihyodel stans.

  82. Marcus June 24, 2012

LMAO this is, in fact, a stan war I am not getting into it. Each artist career and achievements should speak for themselves. Some of you confuse the legends with icons, and some of them don’t belong on the list.

  83. fatu sankoh June 24, 2012

beyonce is an icon their is no one like her her raw talente is unbelivable long live queen bey

  84. pat June 24, 2012

I also see people trying to discredit Janet as a legend/icon. I don’t get it. Janet’s formula has been copied more than any other female in the game, her contribution to the music industry as colossal, her body of work can stand next to anyone’s. She sang about issues that your fav could never. People try to discredit her simply because her voice isnt as strong. That’s only one factor, and not that much of a strong one being that you don’t see Mariah and Whitney are on the RS best female albums list for example.
Beyonce will reach iconic status simply because of her performance factor. owever,of work leaves much to be desired. GaGa will reach icon status, her music is inconsistent, but she sings, dances, and plays an instrument. She also has something to say some of the time. The verdict is still out on Rihanna….

  85. I Judge Flops June 27, 2012

    @Lax is a pitiful F*****.

    Hang yourself.

Beyonce has done things on stage that Rihanna could never do in her dreams. Rihanna still doesn’t write her hits, still can’t sing, and still can’t dance. STILL HAS NO #1 ALUBMS EITHER. FLOP FLOP FLOP. DRUG ADDICT.

  86. Javi B June 28, 2012

I’m surprised many of you young kids are failing to mention our Queen of HipHop soul who is credited for fusing the sound of hip hop and soul MARY J BLIGE!!!!! 20 years and still relevant and getting better, not to mention she basically carried R&b soul on her shoulders during the 90s !! Give credit where its earned MARY J BLIGE ICON!!

    • FP June 28, 2012

THANK YOU ! I was about to say ! Well, you know, this is this is one of the only site that prays for the mediocre artists with mediocre music. They don’t know about quality
Seeing the names of Beyonce or Rihanna on an article talking about legends perfectly shows that. But then again the creator of this site is a young black gay queen that only listens to pop electro s*** and doesn’t know what’s real anyway.
They should know that the only way to make him understand and stop is by NOT commenting. the more comments, the more he thinks he’s doing something right when we perfectly know that there is only like 9-10 people responding to his posts with a bunch of other anonymous names. That makes him feel special.

  87. Sheltop June 29, 2012

I’m sorry but like it or not Lil Kim is a Rap Icon and Legend. Laugh if you want facts are facts.

  88. grandepuntoi August 30, 2012

    Rather valuable piece

  89. King B>Rihanna April 30, 2013

this article was stolen from The Unassigned.

  90. ThatOneFace September 14, 2013

I think Icons are people who stood the test of time. Whether it’s been 100 years or 20, they are still relevant.

Elvis. Madonna. Michael Jackson. Marilyn Monroe. Frank Sinatra. Etc.

Sure there are others, but these people have stood the test of time. I do think what one person thinks of as an icon another might not.

To me (prepare the rage) I do not think lady gage or beyonce are icons. Sure Lady Gaga has done some things, but she is more notorious than Iconic. Beyonce is ‘popular’ but not iconic.

The real debate here is ‘popular’ vs ‘Iconic’.
