Trey Songz’s ‘Chapter V’ Tops Billboard 200; With Sales Of…

Published: Wednesday 29th Aug 2012 by Sam

Much ado has been made about Trey Songz‘s latest album ‘Chapter V’. Will it sell? Will it not?

Well, the conundrum ends now with the publishing of the set’s official first week sales. How did Songz fare? Find out after the jump!

According to Billboard, the ‘Heart Attack’ led set debuted with first week sales of…

135,000

The figure will no doubt be bittersweet for the 27 year old. On the one hand, it’s his first turn atop of the Billboard 200.

Each of Songz’ LP’s have peaked progressively higher on the US tally. 2005’s ‘I Gotta Make It’ bowed at #20, followed by 2007’s ‘Trey Day’, which reached #11. ‘Ready’ rocketed to #3 in 2009, and ‘Passion, Pleasure, & Pain’ claimed the #2 spot in 2010. The latter, however, did so with sales of 240,000 – almost 100,000 copies more than he sold this time to hit #1.

Sign of the times or waning interest? We say a blend of both. But, hey, whichever it’s spun, Trey is number one.

Congrats.

Nicki Minaj is in an entirely different BRACKET! She has been both ANOINTED & APPOINTED by the major music media as the “New Queen of Hip Hop”. Trey Songz has not now nor will he EVER be canonized in that manner!

Once agian pp,l R&B is not promoted and does not sell like POP, COUNTRY & RAP music. Why are you ppl “stuck on crazy” when it comes to that fact?

Bittersweet?? Trey Songz better be happy to have made those numbers. I didn’t realize he even released a new album already. He sing about the same sh*t from one song go to the next…

  4. Beyonce’s Weave (& Her “HIVE” of Head-Lice) August 29, 2012

Well congrats to him, a number one is a number one. I personally think if you’ve bought one Trey Songz album, you’ve bought them all because they all sound the same. Big ups to his promo team, clearly they are doing something right. For a strictly urban act in these times, this is impressive.

  5. CHILE PLEASE!! August 29, 2012

Trey Thongs & Keshia I got a “Cold” I needs to retire from singing because both of them can’t sing!! Just my opinion!!

  6. MC August 29, 2012

Sam, stfu! When CB and Usher had similar numbers I don’t remember you saying it was “bittersweet” or “disappointing” shm I don’t even like him, but gosh if it isn’t your faves then its a flop or disappointing.

    • mob: Operation kill the b!+@# August 29, 2012

It was bitter sweet for Usher Raymond who is HEAVILY PROMOTED & MUCH LOVED by the American media! Chris Brown does not hav that type of standing as you may know by now!

Trey Songz did well and pretty much what I expected give the way STRAIGHT R&B Male ARTISTS are treated in the biased American media!

      • MC August 29, 2012

I agree, but Sam likes to put down artists that aren’t his fave. Usher sold less than this so did Frank Ocean and CB had the same number, but if they aren’t Sam’s faves then they flop, if they are Sam’s faves then they are praised. This site is SOOO Biased its not even funny…

  7. the real xoxo August 29, 2012

impressive, although some of the songs e.g 2 reasons were DIRE.
atleast he never needed to go pop to sell this much.

  8. S****** Blonde August 29, 2012

    135,000 for The Diva.

  9. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) August 29, 2012

Well, that means that he sold as much as Chris Brown and outsold Usher, Frank Ocean, R Kelly and every other male r ‘n’ b artist who released an album this year. I’m not sure how this is bittersweet, given that he didn’t even have a Hot 100 top 40 hit or a major TV performance to launch this album.

And I don’t really care for this album either. I haven’t even bothered to listen to the snippets! But let’s not underestimate his success.

    • mob: Operation kill the b!+@# August 29, 2012

No, Trey Songz had a major promotional campaign for him! He did not have a BET Reality TV show this go around but he did heavily promote this CD! I heard him on all the major Urban Radio stations. He had commercial advertisment on TV/Cable. He CD was being sold in urbn clothing stores. He has performed at several international events (UK Hakney (sp?) to name one).

  10. JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) August 29, 2012

Wow to be honest I didn´t expect these sales. i mean I thought Usher and Chris Brown were bigger than this boy, but he outsold them. That´s not bittersweet for him
What it´s just bitter is the state the industry is in, cos we have to accept 135,000 copies a succes, almost nobody else is doing more than that

    • mob: Operation kill the b!+@# August 29, 2012

This number has always been the average for R&B artists. See Monica, Brandy, Kelly Rowland, Ledisi, Kelly Price, Jill Scott, Maxwell, Tyrece, Tank, Ne-Yo, hell damn near everyone. I don’t even remember popular acts like Aaliyah or Genuwine having big 1st week sells number either! And quiet as it’s kept, non-major acts in Rap like Tyga, Loyde Banks, Slaughter House, Tyler the Diseased, Flo Rida, Soulja Boy etc also don’t put up big 1st week sells figures.

As I have said before, R&B IS NOT A PRIORITY SO IT SHOWS IN THE 1ST WEEK SALES NUMBERS. To be honest, I don’t think R&B artists as a collective have ever scored big during their 1st week. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyonce & Rihanna are the exceptions.

      • kai2dashawn August 29, 2012

umm… i would not just say rihanna her numbers have not pass 207k when got Ashanti and Alicia Keys who had sum of the best numbers out there

    • CBE August 29, 2012

Outsold who? Check CB’s numbers before commenting.

      • kai2dashawn August 30, 2012

thank you chris brown and trey had the same first week sales

  11. Lax August 29, 2012

    Bittersweet,,,,smh.

  12. POP ROYALTY ( F*** Yo Fav) August 29, 2012

    *Applause*

Seriously , i can say this album had no promo/buzz AT ALL. impressive numbers Tbh , i’m Amazed and SHOCKED to say the least.

    Now this is #EffortlessWinning

U go Trey. all @sam can do is bitching about him , while IGNORING the fact he still Real to his artistry and Himself !!

U go trey , i will never hate on someone who’s proving himself and creating a brand for himself !!!

    • Speechless August 29, 2012

For a rihanna fan, your comment is pretty flawless. I see no lies here.

      • POP ROYALTY ( F*** Yo Fav) August 29, 2012

Wtf is “For a Rihanna fan” ?!
        but anyway , Thank U 8)

  13. kai2dashawn August 29, 2012

Last time I check Chris brown Fortune debut with the same numbers of 135k and I believe that usher numbers was 128k and I believe frank ocean numbers was 131k so if u look at it chris brown and trey songz had the biggest first week numbers of the R&B dudes thhis year. As we speak Frank ocean sales are at 272k Usher is at 347k and chris brown 275k.

  14. JJFan1814 August 29, 2012

    Congrats Trey!!!

Waning interest??? Let’s talk Usher’s ‘looking for my album sales’ and Chris Brown’s ‘Unfortunate’

    🙂

    Oh ok!

    • kai2dashawn August 29, 2012

trey songz album is ok but it is not better than chris brown and frank ocean albums

    • mob: Operation kill the b!+@# August 29, 2012

You just worry about Janet’s next flop CD!

      • kai2dashawn August 29, 2012

I love janet and I believe janet will do find

  15. Speechless August 29, 2012

You’re such a hypocrite Sam. You mad you cant make fun of him cuz he didnt have a #1 album. What you got now?

  16. KD August 29, 2012

Any artist that does not tour is bound to starve.

    • Um OK August 29, 2012

Exactly. None of these No.1 debuts mean anything if you’re not consistently selling beyond the first initial week and then by the grace of a few catchy singles down the line you go gold you’re still not bring any huge revenue in for the label unless u have a 360 deal. Its sad. If an artist of Trey’s popularity had released this album in 2002 instead of 2012 he would would have sold double or triple that figure. Same for all of the other guys. Its a shame what illegal downloading, youtube, itunes, pandora… have done to the music industry.

      • Lax August 29, 2012

        @KD U R Right about that! u said a mouth full.

      • kai2dashawn August 30, 2012

you are so right but last time i check trey usher and chris brown are not in a 360 deal maybe frank ocean but i havent heard anything yet

  17. mob: Operation kill the b!+@# August 29, 2012

    Folks are just stupid!

Congrats Trey Songz! I am not a fan but his numbers are conistsant within the R&B genre right now. I told folks something FISHY was going on with the music industry and straight Black Male R&B artists. There is a movement to push them out of the industry. Watch and see what I mean ppl

  18. TAYLOR SWIFTS NUMBER 1 FAN!!! August 29, 2012

Taylor Swift’s ‘Never Ever’ Fever Persists At No. 1 On Hot 100 Chart!!!

Taylor spends the second week at number 1!

In its first two weeks of digital availability, “Never” has sold 930,000 downloads

    Go Queen Taylor

    • kai2dashawn August 29, 2012

      taylor is making that money

    • Beyonce’s Weave (& Her “HIVE” of Head-Lice) August 29, 2012

Why cant you let Trey Songz have his moment? Why do you hate him so much?

    • CBE August 29, 2012

STFU! Taylor swift aint selling s***! her label is buying those downloads… do you know they can do that? if her fans were left to buy her music I would understand 1st week number one but she probably gonna spend a whole month there.

    • FireIce August 29, 2012

I don’t give a damn about that s***-kicking hick Taylor Swift. She sucks ass. Go away.

      • TAYLOR SWIFTS NUMBER 1 FAN!!! August 29, 2012

Hahaha. People cant take Taylor swift slaying the charts..

@CBE ahahhaha. like her label has bought those downloads.
we’re talking about the same Taylor swift who sold 1 million albums in a week here…

Beyonce’s Weave (& Her “HIVE” of Head-Lice. I dont hate him? I dont even know who he is.

  19. White girl mob August 29, 2012

Ya stop sleeping on kreayshawn she on fire trey you won’t be number 1 for long cause kreayshawn is coming baby f*** ya other b**** made n***** hating on KREAY

    • CBE August 29, 2012

LOL I just saw Kreay’s wack ass perform for a station, didnt even finish watching the video.

    • Lax August 29, 2012

@WHITE GIRL You make it a point to keep right
on digging holes for yo fave, sweets! Goodness.

  20. CBE August 29, 2012

Congrats to Trey Songz, This is proof though RnB is done the establishment dont want it. Usher,CB,F** Ocean, now Trey SMH… What I found out is people at the highest in the power structure are homosexual(not all) or engage in these actives. and as they worship satan and feed of the energy of young kids or disappear them before they enter puberty!!! If you wanted to manipulate kids via music who would you use? Katy perry, Rihanna, Justin bieber, Lady gaga, Carly Rae Jepsen etc.

    • ty August 29, 2012

      SHUT UP

      • CBE August 29, 2012

      • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) August 29, 2012

        *2000 years

  21. Wside5678 August 29, 2012

“Bittersweet,” b**** please. 135k may be an underwhelming number overall, but Trey still held his own against every other singing black male who has recently released an album. And he did it without turning pop or coming out of the closet. So hush.

  22. rnb boy August 29, 2012

And he scored a Top 10 single and album with this era in the UK – tho looks like the album has totally dropped out of the UK top 40 this week in the midweeks

  23. Benron (King Of The Navy) August 29, 2012

I cant with all you HE-DIVAS.

Rihanna, Beyonce, Nicki and Gaga are all flops, but this boy is a hit. Any FEMALE artist that threatens your fave you all vicously attack, but if its a guy your not scared. Catty queens!

    • Lax August 29, 2012

@BENRON,,,So true! they tries to hang them high
if they are certain Artist, who making$$$$$$$$$$$

  24. Chachanana12 August 29, 2012

Few things congrats trey @lax n benron so Rihanna Beyonce Nicki n Gaga AREN’T FLOPS? I’m SERIOUSLY asking because y’all act like everyone a flop but Rih. @pop royalty well a “typical Rihanna Stan/fan” usually don’t give anyone else props. Trust me I have literally (cause it’s not hard to keep track) have seem only 6 Rihanna fans give other people credit. N they feel if they say something nice about another artist it’s an insult to Rihanna cause they suppose to like only her. So they feel. But there are a lot of artists better than Rihanna so they just don’t like to acknowledge it sorta like “Since Rihanna’s my favorite I can’t say any artist is better than her. She’s the best that’s y she’s my fave.” So if “Sally” can sing better than Rihanna they won’t say it n they no if they say Rihanna sings better it would b a lie n people would get on them so….. That’s what that means n @kai2 u just inspired me to comment back if someone says something negative about some of my faves to just comment” that’s okay cause I love them n their music n that’s all that SHOULD matter” thank u. Yeah it’s long but so what I had a few things I needed 2 say n shutouts!

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) August 29, 2012

My comment was very sarcastic, calm down.

  25. arfa August 29, 2012

Trey got a US#1 album before Rihanna !! WOW

    • Wside5678 August 29, 2012

Hell, **I** will probably get a #1 album before Rihanna does.

      • MC August 29, 2012

Oh lol I can’t catch my breath

  26. Girrrl August 29, 2012

His numbers are similar to Usher, Chris Brown and “I’m coming out” Ocean. I don’t see why it’s being labelled as underwhelming. Plus a #1 album is a #1 album so let this dude have his shine.

  27. theman August 30, 2012

These numbers are good for Trey, this album didn’t have that much buzz behind it. It kinda just came out of nowhere sorta. He had a tv show to promote his last album, that gave him a huge boost. Every album doesn’t do the same numbers.

  28. Tbozfan10 August 30, 2012

TGJ wanted so badly to be able to tear trey down, but thru couldnt because he sold about the same amount as Usher and Chris Brown, with barely any promotion and without making any techno songs like them either. Who knows? Maybe sticking to doing r&b will reward Trey in the end because his fans won’t leave him.

  29. Ren August 30, 2012

Just kills you, doesn’t it Sam? You wanted so much to see Trey fail, I bet it killed you to write that article — knowing that he did no worse than some of your pets.

  30. antertain August 30, 2012

Props to that No.1 album. No one can take that away no matter what the numbers are so congrats
