Producer Noah “40” Shebib Halts Drake’s Plans For Posthumous Aaliyah Album

Published: Wednesday 8th Jan 2014 by Rashad

‘Started From the Bottom’ beau Drake started a polarizing war of fans last year when he revealed plans of creating a posthumous album filled with some of the late R&B singer Aaliyah‘s unreleased tracks.

Earning a collective thumbs down from those closest to the fallen star (see: Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, her family), the Torontoian rapper was still set to forge ahead with the project as Aaliyah’s label (run by uncle Barry Hankerson) did offer their approval.

Continued negative public reaction to the album – as recent as last month – had the album’s primary producer Noah “40” Shebib on the fence so much so that he, according to a recent interview with VIBE magazine, has called for Drake to halt the project…indefinitely.

“I was seven songs deep.  [Aaliyah’s] mother saying, “I don’t want this out’ was enough for me. I walked away very quickly.” – Noah Shebib

Via Billboard:

“Aaliyah’s label, Blackground — the Hankersons, her uncle and cousin — came to me and said, if she was around, she’d want you to do this [posthumous] project,” Shebib told Vibe of how the project first began. “I’ve been obsessed with Aaliyah forever, and I know Drake has his relationship with her. But that opportunity was mine. Drake said, ‘Can I do it with you?’ and I was like, ‘Of course, we’ll do it together.'”

“The world reacting to Drake’s involvement so negatively, I just wanted nothing to do with it,” Shebib continued. “That was a very sad experience for me. I was naïve to the politics surrounding Aaliyah’s legacy and a bit ignorant to Timbaland’s relationship and everybody else involved and how they’d feel. Tim said to me, ‘Don’t stop, make the album.’ I think that was Tim taking the position of, ‘I’m not going to stop you. If you’re not going to do it, that’s your decision.’ But ultimately, I wasn’t comfortable and didn’t like the stigma.”

All yall trying to do is make money off a dead chick, labels can never let an artist r.i.p. without tryna make money off them.

There’s definitely a lot of politics involved in her legacy , i think the project would’ve been better with Noah , Timb , and Missy

I love Aaliyah so much no one will ever replace the way what that young lady did to my heart. Aaliyah FOREVER!

And don’t get it twisted Im not no crazy fan that likes to act like they don’t enjoy other artists. I do!

And I’m glad 40 and Keshia Chante (Who is slated to play her) is respectful of her families wishes to not do it until her mother gives it the green light.

But something seems fishy with Aaliyah’s uncle….. it seems her mom doesn’t get along with him.

I think an Aaliyah single right now is needed. I would like to hear some of her unreleased songs.

And also, people let’s try to be respectful and act like a bunch of crazy people posting plane pics on twitter making fun of her death. That is never right!

My favorite Aaliyah video – More Than A Woman

let her rest!!! do your own damn music!! I honesty want aaliyah voice to stay in a generation that was frickin awesome this generation will do nothing but tarnish it! her last album was before its time and still sounds better the most albums especially r&b albums I’ve heard these few years

As good of a producer 40 is & interesting it would be to hear his Aaliyah material, the last thing I ever would have done is to listen to Barry Hankerson.

It would be incredible if Timbaland & Missy (& maybe other producers from the 3rd & final album) worked on the project altogether, with the blessing of Diane & Rashad Haughton.

Even if a new album of material does not happen, Her legacy will live on as it is still today. RIP Baby Girl.

I bet This is just a ploy so that all of the fans who were anticipating this album will make there voice heard now and go at timb, missy and aaliyah’s family.

me personally i think an Aaliayh posthumous release should be an Aaliyah posthumous release and not an Aaliyah and Drake duet album. He had no involvement in her career ever, so what gives him the right?

You can tell they only wanna put out this album to make money that’s why there using Drake to secure some hits i find that shady if this was meant for the fans they’d be having Timberland and Missy on the project.

Aaliyah really was at the top in 2000 and 2001 along with Janet Jackson (her idol) but her career got cut short before she could of ruled the world.

So the timelines shows in history when it comes to solo female performers (Singers;Dancers) killing the game.

    Janet Jackson 1990 – 1999, Aaliyah 2000 – 2001, Beyonce 2003 – 2009, Rihanna 2010 – 2012, Beyonce 2013- Present.

Drake needs to get over himself and this pure ass delusional relationship he had with Aaliyah! Just let Aaliyah’s legacy live on through the music and image she left behind. It’s why so many people are still able to listen to her music today.

Drake just needs to let AALIYAH do all the vocals, and release the album as a free mixtape or something so he cant get money for someone he never knew or worked with when she was alive.

  12. eric January 8, 2014

He tried to be clever and tell people he’s got 7 songs, thinking fans will demand to hear them. Aaliyah wasn’t the type of artist to put half-finished vocals on an album when she was alive, so why would she want that in death? Give her that respect and celebrate the work she DID finish.

    Phew! That was close. #dodgedabullet

@team danity^^^^ that’s dumb. sorry i don’t mean to be so blunt. You’re saying that if he gets a hold of all of her unreleased songs, he should give them away for free? What about the Aaliyah estate?

  15. Mark111 January 8, 2014

I want an Aaliyah album, BUT I just want unreleased music, no Drake or Crack Brown or any current artist on it. But if it’s gonna be dramma, then NO!

I want to state that although Tim and Missy was the producer and writer of One In A Million, they aren’t the owners of her music. Missy only wrote on that album and the I Care 4 U song on her last. Tim only had two songs on her last (We Need A Resolution and More Than A Woman). Aaliyah had Static as her writers on most of her hits and her own in doors producers. Tim and Missy aren’t the same as they were in the 90’s. So I don’t want them touching it either unless it was already made by them when she was here.

But hey, she had 3 multi platinum albums and had a great 7 year career and two films. So let her continue to rest. (Although the haters want her to so she want kill their faves.)

  16. MusicStan( Ya’ll know who I stan for) January 9, 2014

I’m one of the biggest fans of her (my fellow caparicorn,#januarybabies) but I personally think that Timb and Missy so do the entire album due to they along with her creative a sound that is only her and no one elses….. I think if Timb and Missy do this it would bring out the Creative Sound and bring back the originality that both have been missing since her death don’t get me wrong they had hits but it something about adding aaliyah to the mix bring out a masterpiece out of both of them… I think it should be a feature album, some songs should have some guest features ( ones that fit perfectly with her style and voice and not one that will overpower her vocals) features like Jay-z, Lil Kim, Ciara, Usher, etc…. if this project get a greenlight I WILL excited!!!!! hopefully timb missy, rashadd and miss, Diane reads the blogs to get the opinions from the fans and take them into consideration cause we just like them want this to be perfect
