Kelly Rowland Teams With Dance DJ Tokimonsta For New Album

Is Kelly Rowland gearing up dally with Dance music again? It certainly seems so.

Recently, the heavily pregnant performer chatted it up with our friends over at The Fader about her fifth solo album and revealed that she’s paired up with renown Electronic Dance DJ Tokimonsta to record new tracks for the set.

Peep the insightful soundbites below…

How did you start working with Tokimonsta? I heard different mixes when I was out and then, when we finally got a chance to meet up, we talked about doing a project together. It was organic, really, the way it happened. I like to do things like things that, I don’t like for anything to be forced. It was really easy—she was super cool. I loved her style, and I love everything about her style of DJ-ing, the way she makes music, how she puts different rhythms and beats and melodies together. I just felt like it could be something special.

It feels like you’ve really embraced dance music over the last couple of years. Has that been a natural progression, or have you been reaching out to it? I think that spending a lot of time in Europe—and just in different countries, period—allows you the opportunity to hear all these different types of beats. Sometimes you really want to try it and everybody around you will think that you’re crazy for wanting to try it, you know what I mean? [Laughs] “You’re bugging, you’re on some musicianship thing.” But I think there’s nothing wrong with that. I think that that’s really being an artist: being creative and trying new things, and seeing what works and what doesn’t. It’s just that simple. When I like something I gravitate towards it. I want to try it.

When is your collaboration with Tokimonsta coming out? We’re still working on it. We want to pinpoint everything to make sure it’s all right. That’s all we really care about: it being a moment. It’s always about creating moments, especially because there’s so much freedom now in music. I feel like there are no rules. {Source}

Interesting, especially given that Kelly seemed to do away with the Eurocentric sound once ‘Motivation’ gained momentum back in 2011.

At the time, it made total sense given that a) she had an R&B hit – as such she’d naturally be expected to deliver an Urban body of work album-wise and b) the US just didn’t seem to be taking to her (amazing) Dance-dipped material.

Fast forward three years and, with Rowland now a free agent after leaving her label situation at Universal Republic, it appears as though she’s cooking up an eclectic set of songs – recorded on her terms – before settling at a new major.

As for teaming with Tokimonsta, we’re all for it. For, her brand of EDM sounds easily fusible with Rowland’s R&B humblings. See what we mean below…

She didn’t “leave” her label. She was dropped. I can’t bring myself to care about Kelly Rowland anymore. I did, I truly did. But after she dropped the ball so many times, it’s just…who cares? I’m glad she’s finding ways to occupy her time though.

  4. Yea ok October 29, 2014

I’ll reserve judgement until I actually hear something from the project. I doubt it will be anytime soon as she will be settling into motherhood for at least the first 6 months after she drops.

  5. Yea ok October 29, 2014

I totally agree. TAGG was a solid album and she didn’t promote or release the right singles. After that I was like girl if u can’t be bothered to care then neither can I. How is it the fans want it more than u do for yourself?

Kelly, let the haters hate. Its what they do. As much as they tell you to give up, you keep making those millions, millions of dollars more than the haters. But one thing i have come to find out is that people are disrespectful cause they always make comments but failed to hear your music. Keep doing your thing, and never give up.

    • B October 31, 2014

Exactly, i doubt she was dropped releasing motivation, when love takes over and kisses down low (all certified) and she goes on tour on top of that. She getting money, which the haters wish they could do. Let the haters hate. I will def be buying the next album.

  14. ann October 29, 2014

Well she certainly doesnt need another all out rNB album this time around! I love forever and a day, commander, and even freak, and im that chic, type songs man I cant wait! I hope she has better managers and label support this time around! smh at all the semi half assed fans and the haters!

  15. TheElusiveLamb October 29, 2014

She is absolutely stunning inside and out (met her once back in 2011) and has a great talent. Talk A Good Game was a solid piece of work that put me in the mind state of a new Janet Jackson album (kind of like Tinashe’s Aquarius), so I’m down for whatever. Good luck Kelly.

  16. Rihboy October 29, 2014

She has been letting me down since motivation. It’s like she just started churning out music after the gp grappled onto that song. Moreover I hope she actually promotes her new efforts. This era has been a mess of celebs half ass promoting!

  17. Rowlandstone October 30, 2014

Why you are taking this personal? If u like her music buy it, if u don’t don’t that’s simple. Where is your proof that she was dropped receipts please. Don’t be stupid please there is a lot of irrelevant artists on this label who should be dropped not kelly.

  18. NOANGEL. October 31, 2014

Kelly is actually signed to a label already IDJMG
