Kelly Rowland Spills On New Album, Leaving Record Label, Caress, & More

It’s all new everything for Kelly Rowland.

As reported yesterday, the R&B star has been unveiled as the new face of Caress skin care and stopped by Huff Post Live to discuss the new venture.

Thankfully, skilled host Marc Lamont Hill didn’t shy away from the other topics folk are keen to hear Kelly dish on too. Namely her new album and recent departure from Universal Republic Records.

During the candid chat, Rowland revealed that she’s already hard at work on the follow-up to last year’s ‘Talk A Good Game’, sharing with viewers the type of sounds she’s honing in on for the as yet untitled LP. The 33-year-old also dished on her reason for leaving her label, adding that she has a number of offers on the table – yet is enjoying the creative freedom she has now.

The insightful interview awaits below…

Insightful interview. Kudos to Hill for “going there” in a way that felt direct, yet warm. What’s more, kudos to Kelly for keeping it real (albeit with a P.C coating).

As regards her next musical step, it’s interesting to hear that she’s mulling over all options – including independent. That said, in keeping it 100, we’re not (yet) convinced “Indie” is the best route for R&B ladies with major label backgrounds (see: Ashanti).

The word “team” was used by Ms. Kelly in earnest during this interview, as such we’d love to see her sign with a label that will guarantee the strongest “team” possible. From radio pluggers, to marketing, to PR; major labels still rule the roost when it comes to delivering a full-service setup. The latter being exactly what’s needed to shine a brighter spotlight on Kelly’s wealth of talent.

Anyway, enough of our rambling…

Your thoughts?

She seems in a really great place and I’m excited for what the future holds.

Kelly really knows how to pick herself up and move on if needs be. The last time she did that, she left Music World to release “When Love Takes Over” with David Guetta which became one of the best-selling singles of 2009, last decade AND kickstarted the EDM movement in pop right now.

TAGG is such a great album and it has so much potential but the era is officially over now – hard pill to swallow but neccessary to see Kelly win in future.

As a kelly fan who is totaly honest with himself I would like 2 state a few things.
    Is kelly tallente? YES!!!
    Can she sing ? YES!!!
Is she a Good performer? YES!!!
    Is she Lazy!!! YES!!!
Truth be told people keeping rooting 4 her cos we want 2 see her blow-up which can happen is she is given the right team and budget. The lazy part is cos she stays sitting on her a** and complain that no one is pushing her stuff when she is not making an effort. I ve seen kellys pic more tyms after a workout session and on the beach than anywhere near a promotion stop

    • amian March 27, 2014

      I agree
this girl do more for her workout session and for other artist. this girl p*** me off because this day you don’t need label for everything… especialy with social media. I don’t believe in her team AT ALL.
Just the way she handle her Facebook tell a lot of thing and her team doesn’t get it for me but anyway.

She should be a better performer i love her but sometime… common’ she learn with the best…

I hope the best of best in a futur for her.

  4. Serfboart March 27, 2014

She is too lazy to be a indie artist. What major label would want her ? Her sales are atrocious

  5. Blackkupid March 27, 2014

And all that RnB s*** isn’t doing jack 4 her! She needs 2 spice it up with urban/urban pop sound, her voice sounds amazing with anything that has some serious base and uptempo sound like loose my breat, down for whatever, work and so on. And most importantly ppl want 2 see kelly dance.all this catwalk, posing around video is not gonna cut it. We want to see u pop and lock kelly. Am still on ur team and rooting 4 U

  6. Stephy March 27, 2014

She is such a sweet & humble young beautiful black woman.

With that being said, her music is very stale & forgettable….

    • Serfboart March 27, 2014

      Says the Mariah stan 🙄

  7. BEYAWNCE March 27, 2014

No matter what, Kelly >>>>>> YAWNCE

  8. Christuna Aguihaha March 27, 2014

Kelly better speak the truth. She was not left, she got dropped by music world. What a disgrace way of departure

  9. Tina Knowles stan March 27, 2014

Kelly won’t ever be signed again. She’s too much of a flop and liability no ones gonna take that risk .

  10. Skyfall March 27, 2014

    Stephy

    You so fake b**** lol

  11. Skyfall March 27, 2014

I’m mad at Kelly TAGG was her best album yet she didn’t promote except for that song Dirty Laundry, which IMO was a bad lead single. She should of released Down On Love or Gone as the lead singles followed by I remember and she should of been on every promo stop from the Ellen show to GMA. Her album came out in the summer so she should of booked some festivals to promote at and she should of used X Factor to promote like Demi

  12. Gregg March 27, 2014

Its funny how haters come on here and disguise themselves as “fans”..lol…sit down@blackcupid…….Im a fan i was angry when they werent ready with a video after the superbowl and when they didnt release a single while on Xfactor….two major Opportunities missed, i dont blame her for leaving.

  13. Timago March 27, 2014

    SMELLY FLOPLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. h March 27, 2014

I can imagine her signing with Atlantic Records – she’ll be the label’s female Trey songz. Or RCA… they’re signing everyone and everyone’s dog at the moment. Kudos to Kel. And best of luck… I always preferred the urban pop and dance Kelly!

  15. Absolved March 27, 2014

Kelly’s problem is that she has terrible management and representation, and in the meantime she seems to rely too heavily on them as opposed to taking matters into her own hands and being a whip-cracker. She’s like Brandy, Ciara, Keyshia Cole and all the other R&B chicks…they don’t have good promoters who know how to create a lasting buzz or have enough industry clout to manipulate the behind-the-scenes in their favor. So when people say that Kelly is “lazy” and “doesn’t promote,” well I’m sure she WOULD if she had a team in place that could legitimately set the stage for her to do just that. I imagine that trying to book Kelly as a performer on anything high profile or substantial is not the easiest of tasks. And sadly that’s the ONLY way most R&B acts could get widespread mainstream attention; because radio isn’t gonna automatically jump on their music just because.

  16. Dev March 27, 2014

Kelly’s interviews are always the same. It’s always a fresh start and a new sound followed by little to no promotion.

Kelly keeps talking about a team…. a good team but….

See needs to pick up or bow fully out

  17. LOL March 27, 2014

LOL KELLY’S PROBLEM IS THAT SHE SPENT HER WHOLE CAREER SUCKING ON H0EONCE’S C*** INSTEAD OF CONCENTRATING ON HER OWN CAREER. SHE HAD PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO BLOW UP UP ON HER OWN, INSTEAD SHE CHOSE TO BE FRAUDYONCE’S MAID. TOO LATE NOW LOL.

  18. Mimi carey March 27, 2014

Blah. No ones checking for her music. Kelly should just get a reality show focused on her fashion, fitness and laying on the beach.

  19. real March 27, 2014

She did a little promo the week of TAGG release. She was on GMA the day after she released the album. The bad thing was that she performed the song ” street life”. We all know that the song “street life” is not a single to perform on GMA. Not even single worthy. She also did 106&park, Katie, Wendy Williams and some others i think. But she did good performances on all; however she performed different songs on each show, which made no sense. When she should have peformed the single “Gone”

  20. lovebird March 27, 2014

  26. lovebird March 27, 2014

How can Kelly “comeback” when she has never been Digger Bey?

    • Sarah March 27, 2014

I think you can answer that yourself..u seem to know ALOT about her career

  27. gio88 March 27, 2014

forget everything she said about her new album , because , like every era ,now she is saying these stuffs then she will do something completely different!tagg had to be a conceptual album but the end it has become a normal (but anyway great) r&b album. She should try a different r&b sound like it was Motivation when debuted , something diffrent from r&b it is listened right now

  28. lovebird March 27, 2014

Oh Sarah, just like Kelly’s album sales, your shade is struggling boo.

    • Sarah March 27, 2014

No shade given baby..just pure love!!!!

  32. a gal March 27, 2014

oh please! she got me excited last time and she looked like it was going to be the business. you ain’t going to catch me off guard again. At this point you have to show me, done with just the telling part. PROMOTE YOUR S***….YOU DON’T HAVE TO JUST RELY ON UR LABEL U MADE SEVERAL APPEARANCES ON MAJOR SHOWS AS WELL AS XFACTOR & YOU STILL DIDN’T PROMOTE YOU, HELLO!!!! YOU HAVE TO WANT THIS FOR YOURSELF GIRLFRIEND BUT GOOD LUCK TO YA

  33. ROSEGOLD March 27, 2014

Kelly is always making promises, but never comes through. Less talking and more doing Kelly. You deserve to win, but you have to want it. Best of luck to her and I hope she finds a good label….

  34. CzarM March 27, 2014

Kelly’s problem is that she doesn’t know what she wants to do or who to appeal to. One minute she’s making dance records with Guetta, then next she’s making R&B records with Lil Wayne and Mike Will. And the bizarre part is that she’s actually excelled at and been accepted as both, but then abandons each lane midhiss before she cements herself there. She needs to decide what she wants to be. If you wanna be a dance diva, then be a dance diva. If you wanna be a latter day version of Cheryl “Pepsi” Riley/Deborah C**, then be that. Just commit to the lane from start to finish and quit teeter tottering from one thing to the next.

    • Sarah March 27, 2014

It’s called artistry sweetie..being multi-faceted ..she has the power of an artist to change it up as much as she wants..now if some people dont get it..thats their fault..

  35. Mark111 March 27, 2014

It’s the same crap for the pass 5 years. She’s working on an album, she wants to get married and have children. As if she didn’t drop 2 albums since then. I give up, you’re. Not gonna pop off in your 30s.

    • Why you playin’ ? March 27, 2014

Why wouldn’t she pop off in her 30′s? Tamar did. Besides, Kelly popped off a long time ago, she was a founding member of Destiny’s Child. Her solo career, while milder than Beyonce’s, has still been solidified. Kelly is 4 albums strong and is currently working on her fifth despite being voluntarily label-less. Kelly does promote; but she’s never had the kind of backing that allows her to promote on a grand scale. When you consider the fact that Kelly is an industry vet, there’s no reason why she hasn’t been slated to perform on some of the biggest nights and stages in the world (ie. The Grammys, American Music Awards, Billboard Awards, etc). Hell, even the Soul Train Awards. I know that Kelly’s fans want her to be a dominating force in music today, but maybe Kelly is not willing to do what is required for that type of fame. I’d say, given the career that she has had she’s done pretty well on her own. I for one own every K-Row album there is and I think her voice and artistry is amazing. If she continues to evolve as an artist and as a fabulous woman there’s no reason why she can’t “pop off” again at any age.

  36. Adam Monster March 27, 2014

    She’s ALWAYS working on a new album…

  37. Sarah March 27, 2014

Why is everyone so PRESSED by Kelly?? If the girl is always working on an album then so be it…Why does it bother her non fans so much..that’s what i’m baffled the most about..Stop complaining..if you dont like her..keep it moving..damn..She is clearly making money elsewhere than music..hence this endorsement and many others..get off her balls already. At least she is smart enough to know that her music ISNT selling millions..but she has other sources of income..THAT in itself is a smart business woman..A real lazy h** would sit on their ass and dont branch out..

    • @sarah March 27, 2014

did you buy any of Kelly’s albums seeing that you’re always here defending her?

      • Sarah March 27, 2014

Every last one..From Destiny’s Child’s first album to Kelly’s last

  38. AsAfan March 27, 2014

So she left her label because there was a lack of promotion, but she just said in this interview that you can’t rely on the label you have to put in an effort….

Kelly is talented, but very lazy. How are you going to be chilling on the beach a few weeks after your album came out?

    • Sarah March 27, 2014

Cuz she has a life outside of music…Her life doesn’t consist of pleasing the people who constantly hate on her..as a fan i bought the album and i thoroughly enjoyed it..what she does after that is her business…I swear thats why music is in the state that it is in now..critical people like you who try to tear people down but dont support them..is that what life is about..damn

      • AsAfan March 27, 2014

I’m glad that you’ve supported Kelly (legally) as a Rowland Stone, as some of them do not go out and buy her album, or support her in anyway. I’m just confused, because just like you I want Kelly to WIN, and I know she is capable of doing so much more, and Talk A Good Game was a solid album. Fans are just frustrated because Kelly can do so much more, she was the first one to have a #1 hit out of DC, and the first to get a grammy. But to be honest with you Sarah I want Kelly to win, and to pull in better sales, have a number album and have another number one single. She’s proven on numerous occasions that she is capable. My frustration is that TAGG deserved more, because it’s probably one of Kelly’s best albums. I’m not trying to start anything with you, just saying.

  39. @sarah March 27, 2014

did you buy any of Kelly’s albums seeing that you’re always here defending her?

    • Sarah March 27, 2014

i bought every single Kelly album…including Destiny’s Child 5 albums (8 Days of Christmas) so YES..I have every right to defend her

  40. Bravo!! March 27, 2014

I’m living for the extra weight gain Kelly!! Loos real nice on her..

  41. Why you playin’ ? March 27, 2014
