Fantasia is still the name on everybody’s lips after her soul-stirring Soul Train Awards tribute to Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds aired on BET and Centric last night.
Lending fiery renditions of the Edmonds-penned numbers ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop)’ (originally performed by Whitney Houston) and ‘Superwoman,’ the performance won rave reviews from critics and viewers alike – a hot topic well over into the next day. But, while many are praising the ‘Idol’ winner’s stunning showing as the highlight of the night, there’s one who doesn’t exactly share the sentiment – ‘Superwoman’s original singer Karyn White.

Yes Fantasia killed that performance, but BET was wrong and messy, as usual. They should have asked Karyn to sing her own song bottom line, especially if they were able to dig up Tevin Campbell and Bobby Brown.

If they wanted Karyn to sing the song, they’d have asked. This reminds me of the kerfuffle over Beyonce singing that Ledisi song. All great singers, but if they want you to sing it, they’d have asked.

I agree 100%; No shade to Karyn but I’ve seen her live performances on youtube… she doesn’t have the vocal control or stage presence… while the crowd may have been happy to see her; she would not have captured the crowd like Fantasia did. Babyface knew what he was doing.. at the end of the day it wasn’t about Karyn it was a tribute to babyface and the music he wrote. Karyn singing it was not a requisite. I’m willing to bet my last dollar he hand picked Fantasia to sing the songs.. she puts on a show.. I’ve seen her live a few times.. she gives 1000%
It’s not her song, it’s baby face’s song. If he asked Fantasia to sing it, then he has every right to. Like, it wasn’t ledsi’s song neither.
Karyn should definitely have been asked to sing her own song.
I was wondering about Karyn (I grew up on the VINYL), but honey Fantasia killed that performance., it was an amazing tribute. Brandy, BOYZ, Tevin all of them !!!!! Baby face stillll sounds good too lord!!!!!
Wow, she looks gorgeous to be 50! I think everyone knows that song by now, it’s an R&B classic. The original is sung with so much vulnerability. I like Fantasia a lot , but I can’t say that I got that from her live version. I must say, I would have loved to hear how it would sound today from the original artist. Missed opportunity unfortunately!
