There are literally THOUSANDS of artists who’ve named their record labels after the streets they lived on in their childhood homes. Didn’t Solange even name something “Hadley St.” (not talking about her album, I think her label). Beyonce wasn’t the first, nor will she be the last.
Also…David Bowie dropped a whole album, visuals included, with NO prior notice to iTunes BEFORE Beyonce did! And there are MANY others who’ve done similar, BEFORE Beyonce did. MJ is the first to come to mind with his movie that included complete visuals for each and every song on his album – TWO DECADES AGO! So, Beyonce doesn’t own that idea either.
And WHO exactly said #ANTI would have a “lips sealed release date”? The #ANTIdiaRy game isn’t over yet and we just don’t know what her next move is gonna be – kinda the POINT of being #ANTI?!?! Right? Who’s to say that after the game ends and promo for the tour has started heavily, that an official release date is not gonna follow? Most think it will. We just have to wait for it.
Beyoncé was not the first to surprise release album yes, but it can be argued that it is the most impactful surprise release album which sets it apart from prior attempts of the same concept. Also, just because you are not the first to do something does not mean that other people cannot copy you or be inspired by your specific attempt. Simple example: All those girls running around high school a couple years ago with half their head shaved, that was Rihanna’s doing. Was she the first to do it? Absolutely not. But that doesn’t matter. That doesn’t negate the fact that she influenced that. And while we cannot attribute the creation of the hairstyle to Rihanna, we can attribute the trend in 2012 to Rihanna. There’s the difference. The same concept is applied to Beyoncé and the surprise release. The idea is not attributed to her, the impact is, the popularity is, the newly changed release date is. All this to say that pointing out that other people have surprise released or named their label after streets is not a sufficient argument to counter the claim that Rihanna is copying Beyoncé.

Billboard had LONG been thinking of changing the official album/single release date from Tuesday to Friday, WAAAY before Beyonce did it. And THIS was because albums are released on FRIDAYS overseas and this gave music piraters a chance to pirate the album before it was ever released to the States. Which is “PROBABLY WHY” Beyonce chose to release her album digitally, thru one channel (iTunes), on a Friday. She was plugging up holes for any leaks. She didn’t invent anything or get the industry thinking about changing the release date. She saw the writing on the wall and proceeded accordingly.
