Weigh In: Only 3 Albums Released This Year Went Platinum

Only 10 albums released in 2013 went platinum that year.  In 2014, only 5 acts who released projects in that calendar year crossed the platinum threshold before December 31st (Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Pentatonix, Ariana Grande, Jason Aldean).  This year is set to see that precious metal elude more acts than ever.

As of this week, only 3 albums released this year have gone platinum in the U.S.  Interestingly, not one is by an American-born act.

That’s right, Canadian emcee Drake laid claim to the first title when his surprise fourth album, ‘If You’re Reading This…,’ crossed the platinum threshold in summer 2015.  It wasn’t until late November when powerhouse diva Adele nabbed the second title after her blockbuster comeback album, ’25,’ sold over 3 million its first week.  The sales give her the distinct honor of being the only multiplatinum release of 2015.

Now, courtesy of a sales bump, the two will be joined by Canadian crooner Justin Bieber as his comeback album, ‘Purpose,’ is now in the 2015 platinum club.  Details below:

Via Billboard:

“[‘Purpose’] sold another 100,000 copies in the latest tracking week, bringing its total sum in pure album sales to 1.01 million. It only took five weeks to reach a million sold — the quickest trip to a million for Bieber thus far.”

Congratz are undoubtedly in order for Bieber, an act many spelled the end for after he was bombarded with a number of personal and legal woes in the past.  Alongside Drake, Adele, and Bieber, The Weeknd – 2015’s other big success story – is narrowing the gap between himself and platinum status as well.  The emo-crooner, with his 2015 ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ LP that cranked out hit after hit after hit (see: ‘Can’t Feel My Face,’ ‘The Hills,’ and more), is yet another non-American who saw major domination of the U.S. charts this year.

With projects due from Usher, Katy Perry, Missy Elliott, Ariana Grande, Beyonce, and more, 2016’s charts may sing a different tune.

Damn! Rihanna is wishing she can sell this much but it will never happen. #Beyseason

    • Kayla C December 23, 2015

And y’all wonder why Beyoncé gets dragged for filth… When she’s doing good y’all like to compare her to everyone to make it seem like she’s on top, but when she’s getting slayed it’s “why are we comparing and pitting these women against each other” lmaooo

      • REAL TALK December 23, 2015

I Genuinely feel TGJ creates these fake accounts with argumentative post just to create Stan wars, thus increasing their clicks and pockets, as if these ads aren’t enough.

    • Hush December 23, 2015

Not yet. There will be plenty of time to laugh at Rihanna (like when her scary dumbass releases her album AFTER the holiday shopping season and it flops because a – people are spent out and b – no one cared anyway… all because she wasn’t bold enough to face Adele and Bieber.) Be patient sweetheart.

    • Absolved December 23, 2015

More like 8 years of NO multi-platinum albums for the funny looking, deformed-foreheaded, non-singing, studio-created Barbadian w**** who needed an ass whopping to stay famous.

    • You tried December 23, 2015

      @Kayla
I get your logic but unfortunately it isn’t Fact! I don’t agree with ppl like the first commenter putting Beys name at the top of the comments for NO REASON ?? however Hun BEY IS NOT GETTING SLAYYED OR DRAGGED! You delusional kids fail to realize that Bey is winning SLAYYING RIGHT NOW as we talk about her every social media site every media outlet Movies reality shows and etc! She always wins even when she has NO ALBUM OUT! Have a seat or come correct ! If you call what these miserable little kids doing on these little bitty o’l comments DRAGGING girl bye THATS LOVE! They are the same ppl that buy her albums her concert tickets , same ppl that give her the best ratings on TV and the ppl that know every single song she has ! Carry on thanks

  2. Haus Mutha Adele December 23, 2015

Bieber will fadeaway the second he gets direct competition. He is basic live but has good songs so will have a problem on his hands once something better comes along to eat into his share of the pumpkin spiced latte crowd.

    • So Gone 4 Monica December 23, 2015

And he knows it. He better learn from Rihanna and sabotage the competition. #FreeRita

  3. Kayla C December 23, 2015

Congrats to Adele. Drake’s album was nothing to scream about, but it was the surprise factor so that’s that. Bieber album is actually better than the rest of these R&b boys’ albums

    • Tinashe >>>> Kehlani December 23, 2015

That’s because he’s smart enough to work with different writers. The r&b boys only work with their friends so they all sound the same and flop.

  4. Pat December 23, 2015

    All three suck…

  5. King Gemini December 23, 2015

I feel Like Kehalni and Tinashe are equally talented in 2 different ways. How come on this site there’s always bashing of other artists it always puzzles me. Kehlani is a more natural performer though Tinashe is more musically inclined with producing and writing but they are both very talented in their styles of R&B that they pursue. The sad thing is most of these artists you guys argue about are friends and wouldn’t condone the behavior or the lengths you guys go to, to bash other artists to make them seem superior. Beyonce and Nicki have both said this and I’m a big fan of both yet both fan bases who seemingly “worship” these people do exactly the opposite of what their “fave” would like to see from music fans. As I’ve said since I started commenting I have multiple artists I truly do enjoy I don’t have to pick 1 artist and treat them like a god I support music I do and don’t like and there are certain artists body of work which have made me a long time fan, people on this websit are barbaric and and childish. Who argues over chart positions that they themselves do not have. No one here is on billboard so no one here has any valid argument because the people themselves aren’t arguing about their position or sales. People like you have changed the climate of music. Now artists and labels are chasing chart positions because that’s all the GP cares for now. And we wonder why music is on the decline and everyone can’t sell. Smh can we do better as music lovers

    • Danzou December 23, 2015

this is so true. the love is gone. its all about money. if it wasnt for white people in the USA it wouldnt be this way. but im not worried. this game is about longevity. justin bieber doesnt have it, selena gomez doesnt have it, and neither does miley. im sorry but they cant sing. the only way to have longevity is to be able to sing or have some real talent such as producing and songwriting. thats why bey is still here, thats why celine is still here, thats why r kelly is still here, and jay z and nas because they love what they do and are respected. even aretha and patti are still relevant. bieber will never be respected. hes just a white boy pop star thats for the moment. so is selena gomez. artists like those two will never reach a mature crowd. they cannot sing.

  6. #JACKIE December 23, 2015

Usher and missy won’t go platinum. Bey and Katy will definitely.

    • Arianator Barb December 23, 2015

Bey definitely will, kinda sceptical about Katy.

      • #JACKIE December 23, 2015

Katy knows her lane and stays in it. She won’t do huge numbers like her pop sisters, but she will go platinum at the most, and maybe get one or two #1 singles.

      • Danzou December 23, 2015

Katy could. she has to bring heat like she did with her last two albums. i hate to admit it but shes been dropping hits since “i kissed a girl”

      • #JACKIE December 23, 2015

Katy slays boo. She makes great pop music.

  7. Siamese December 23, 2015

Justin Bieber WILL NOT fade away.

His fanbase mainly comprises of 11 – 18 year old’s but I took my 13 and 10 year old sisters to see him three weeks ago and I could swear I saw a PLETHORA of Women in their mid 20s/early 30s who were there to see him also and they DID NOT have kids or were accompanying any children. He’s not a bad live performer by the way, he reminds me of a young Justin timberlake with elements of usher; he’ll get better as he ages… watch!

The boy is SLAYING, regardless, and his fans are loyal just like One Direction’s – they are the ONLY act (male, female, solo, group) who is/was absolutely MUDERING stadium concerts, selling out 90k seat venues in a day!!!

CONGRATS ADELE… and DRAKE (the only BLACK act)… and Bieber.

    • So Gone 4 Monica December 23, 2015

Aaron Carter fans felt the same way you did fifteen years ago and look what happened there. Everyone thinks their fave is untouchable until someone better comes along. As a Bey Stan I’m old enough to remember that there was a time in which she wasn’t even being compared to Janet, Jennifer and Christina because nobody saw her as a threat. You won’t see it coming but it will happen to Bieber eventually.

      • Lana Del Bae December 23, 2015

The Backstreet Boys probably thought the same thing until Nsync came along.

      • Fantasea 2 December 23, 2015

You don’t remember what Lopez succeeded in doing to Mariah in 2000. It happens to the best of them so Justin better keep an eye out because he isn’t much without his songs .

      • #JACKIE December 23, 2015

I don’t remember Aaron carter ever being as big as JB boo.

    • Danzou December 23, 2015

honestly i hate to admit it but justin will be here for awhile. maybe not for decades but a while at least. it depends on if he makes the right choices or not. he cant dance and he cant sing either but he has a fan base full of clueless white people who are falling for the typical “twinkk white boy pop star” formula that worked for Nsync. one direction has longevity because they can actually sing. same with ariana and fifth harmony if they stay strong. bey ciara rih chris usher all have no worries theyve all been here over ten years now. adele will be here because she can sing and white people are falling for this whole “fat soulful white b.itch” formula. if she was black she wouldnt be half as respected.

  8. Messy December 23, 2015

What about J cole? Didn’t he hit platinum this year?

    • pussiePopstress December 23, 2015

yes, j. cole went platinum this year but his album was RELEASED in 2014. this post says only 3 albums released in 2015 went platinum in 2015

  9. Xyz December 23, 2015

Usher and missy wont go platinum….

    • What now December 23, 2015

They honestly have a chance though. Missy is missed tremendously and the female rapper lane isn’t over saturated in any shape or form AT ALL. Usher needs the Jesus on his PR team and he might just pull it off.

  10. Jamie December 23, 2015

Well…Anti went invisible so…that’s major for Rihanna

  11. Navy Nick December 23, 2015

People who don’t have Janets album, are truly missing a great cd. It’s all good, Janet has nothing to prove, but it really is a great cd that’s worthy of platinum sells.

  12. CC December 23, 2015

    I blame the labels…..
Look how much money they make ( THE LABELS) from Spotify and Vevo but wont promote artists or sign talented artists anymore.
If TINASHE wants to sell albums in 2016 and go intl then she will have to get new more connected management. Period.
RCA will not promote RNB female artists. ………………………..
They don’t even promote legends like R Kelly, BUT THESE URBAN ARTISTS WANT TO BLAME FANS INSTEAD OF THEIR MGT AND SORRY & RACIST RCA LABEL.

  13. StopLyingggg December 23, 2015

Nicki minaj is a lying ass h** lmao I thought the pink print is 3x platinum ???????
