Madonna Fans Say Lady Gaga’s ‘Perfect Illusion’ Is A Ripoff

Published: Saturday 10th Sep 2016 by Rashad

Without question Lady Gaga‘s comeback single, ‘Perfect Illusion,’ is a critical polarizer.

While some praise the 80’s inspired tune, the first from her yet-titled 5th album, for its simplicity and catchiness, others are slamming it for being “too repetitive,” amongst other complaints.  But, much like her tongue-wagging 2011 single, ‘Born This Way,’ ‘Illusion’ is birthing another controversy:  claims of copycatting.

For, just as she fielded attacks from Madonna fans (and the pop queen herself) for ‘BTW’s similarities to the 1989 hit ‘Express Yourself,’ now the Grammy-winning ‘Poker Face’ diva is being plagued with tongue lashings from Madge fans who think ‘Illusion,’ released today, sounds an awful lot like…

And water is wet. The only difference is, Lady Gaga is Fiji and Madonna’s is Dasani. They both serve the same purpose, it’s just that Gaga can actually sing and dance, and compose her own music, despite her past gimmicks and I don’t even use her.

    • Ughhhh September 10, 2016

I can’t even finish the first part of Perfect Illusion to tell the comparison. I have to turn it off. Right when she says “it wasn’t love” I get annoyed. The way she sings on this track combined with the repetitive haunting and harsh vocals she uses, I can’t bare to listen. This song is literally ugly. Madonna I’m not a fan of you either but you have nothing to worry about hun.

    • ? September 10, 2016

      The song is TRASH

    • Taylor Swift-To-Find-A-New-Man (Slayty) September 10, 2016

So Madonna doesn’t dance, perform, and compose her own music? Just because Flopga can shout louder doesn’t make her leaps and bounds ahead of Madonna vocally. The difference between the two is that most of what Madonna composes, sings, and dances to is orginal while Flopga recycles it with a generic dance pop twist and some yelling.

    • maurice September 10, 2016

OMFG!!!!! the first time I heard P.I, I said it sounds just like Papa Don’t Preach.
      i still like it though.

    • Shae September 10, 2016

MADONNA is a TRAINED dancer. One of the most innovative dancers to ever set FOOT on a stage. HAVE SOME RESPECT. Madonna is the ICON. Gaga is a student. It’s like comparing Aretha Franklin and Ciara. MADONNA is a legend.

      • dee September 10, 2016

A dancer…bending and stretching is not dancing hunty! Michael, Janet, and Paula were dancers.

      • Shae September 10, 2016

Vogue. Lucky star. Ia isla Bonita. Madonna is a trained dancer.

    • MissImpartial September 10, 2016

If she can compose her own music why does she need to bite Madonna’s music????

    • JohnVidal September 10, 2016

She’s still making same ol’ same ol’ music? I thought she had died from her lupus or another one of her attention-seeking illnesses!I guess it’s time for another discount bargain sale along with another pity-me party about how she was victimized..bla bla bla!

      Enough already… f*king boring! ?

    • OMG Logic!!! September 10, 2016

What’s the point of being able to sing and compose when you don’t have an original bone in your body?

There’s thousands of amazingly talented karaoke singers all over the world, but they don’t become legends because they’re just that, karaoke singers without originality.

  2. Molly #TheMostRelevantBitch September 10, 2016

Gaga vocally is a better artist than Madonna could ever be. But nothing new Gaga is unoriginal like her friend Beyonce .

    • yas September 10, 2016

b**** you like selena gomez… youve already lost!

    • America’s Most Wanted ~ Tyler September 10, 2016

B**** your fave is nothing but a rip off of Aaliyah. She’s the WOMAN that D. Smith….I mean Ciara, always wanted to be . So shut the f*** up!

  3. Dossome September 10, 2016

The part where she sings “It’s a perfect illusion” sounds alot like the “I’m keeping my baby” part in Papa Don’t Preach but that’s basically it…Not a fan of either song though tbh

    • Sean September 11, 2016

      Yup….

Madonna fans desperately searching for relevancy.

It’s not a sample. It’s not a rip-off. It’s a very common sequence of notes. And not even the main hook from Papa.

      Let’s move on….

      • Allaiyah Weyn September 4, 2020

Bruh, this is at least the 3rd time people have noticed similaritries between a Gaga & Madonna song.

  4. AmericanDream September 10, 2016

That’s what I thought when I listened to the song for the very first time, “I’ve heard this before” Hell I did.

  5. Stephy September 10, 2016

Papa Don’t Preach is a classic. A Global #1 hit.

    • Molly #TheMostRelevantBitch September 10, 2016

    • Shae September 10, 2016

PAPA DONT PREACH is an iconic classic

  6. Rosie September 10, 2016

Just gonna wait for the gravatar-less Madonna stans to come in for the kiis.

    • JOHNVIDAL September 10, 2016

Why you mad still? Where is Lana on teh charts? Can we talk about the big disappoinment that was Honeymoon musically coming from Ultraviolence? So many questions. Just learn to appreciate the talent these talented artists have. The ones that are talented I mean, like Gaga and Lana (Lana for making music, poor thing cannot sing or perform).

  7. Rosie September 10, 2016

Also Perfect Delusion has a less than 8% lead on iTunes and will fall to #2 within the next 2-3 updates on Kworb. Welp.

    • Taylor Swift-To-Find-A-New-Man (Slayty) September 10, 2016

      It’s sad huh?

  8. leveinard September 10, 2016

    Madonna still has fans?

    • Stephy September 10, 2016

Her sold out world tours shows she still has plenty of fans.

    • Taylor Swift-To-Find-A-New-Man (Slayty) September 10, 2016

Compare Madonna’s last tour to the floprave tour. By the numbers, Made has more fans than Flopga

    • leveinard September 10, 2016

      If y’all say so.

      • Caleb September 10, 2016

We do say so and have the receipts to prove it.

  9. Molly #TheMostRelevantBitch September 10, 2016

Gaga is overrated trash sorry monsters deal…………..

  10. Taylor Swift-To-Find-A-New-Man (Slayty) September 10, 2016

LMAO! Flopga’s remaining stabs are more delusional than Britney’s. It’s hilarious trying to praise her for being “innovative” and doing something “new” when this literally sounds like a mash up of Madonna’s Get Together and Papa Don’t Preach. Flopga is no artist, she’s a recycling specialist. You’d think people would see this by now. New year, same sh*t. It’s become tradition now for her fans to call her shyt new and refreshing even though it is stale, recycled, and unnecessary.

  11. Taylor Swift-To-Find-A-New-Man (Slayty) September 10, 2016

But what I want to know is where are those stans who said no one was checking for Katy but Flopga was “anticipated”??? Why did it take her so long to top iTunes? Why did she only get 27% lead over the #2 song? Why does she already have dark red updates? Why is it about to drop to #4 already? Why did Rise, a song that was not a single, mature, and not radio friendly, do better than Flopga’s “highly anticipated” comeback? I need answers. Cause it’s looking like another flop era to go with the previous year of a flop album, flop singles, flop tour, and a flopped AHS season.

    • JOHNVIDAL September 10, 2016

Girl you´re so pathetic checking ehr numbers like that. A real sad stan. Do you care for music or talent at all? You better worry why Katy Perry just released the worst song ever for any Olympic Games. Did she thought she has a voice worth a song for an event?

  12. _ September 10, 2016

    Gaga is reductive

  13. Mar September 10, 2016

Imma have to listen again, because at first listen this didn’t sound anything like Papa Don’t Preach…. ????? ? I thought it was horrible from the first listen tho… I just don’t get it. Honestly…

    • Casual September 10, 2016

I have listened several times and still don’t hear the similarities, sonically or melodically. I was starting to think I was the only one.

  14. stan September 10, 2016

Oldonna is always mad about more talented artists than her. And her career is the biggest copy-paste from Marilyn Monroe and other starlets than came before her, so she should shut up about originality.

  15. monty September 10, 2016

lol why do these idiots care?

  16. Some of you Ho’s September 10, 2016

Didn’t like it at first listen, her vocals and annunciation are all over the place and quite grating. It does remind me of Madonna, PDP is a classic

  17. Meteorite September 10, 2016

Oh wow…I knew it sounded familiar but I couldn’t pin what though…hmm Gaga….gurl…this is not a good look, whether intentional or not. For her sack I hope this doesn’t catch wind with the mass media. If so a storm of drama awaits this era.

  18. Kwinzy September 10, 2016

I find it freaking ironic how this blog goes in on Gaga yet never gives the BIGGEST SWAGGER JACKER the industry’s ever seen, Nicki Garbaj, the same treatment.?#SorryNotSorry

  19. Kwinzy September 10, 2016

I happen to love both artists but I don’t hear the similarities, sorry.

    • JOHNVIDAL September 10, 2016

Same here. This is just retarded. Why can´t people just enjoy the talents out there? Gaga is so damn talented and has been slaying all her performances these last few years and her releases show she´s a real artist. While Madonna´s catalogue and whole career is outstanding. Love the good things in both of them.

  20. Queen Barb September 10, 2016

    Hope Madonna calls her out

  21. Royalkev September 10, 2016

I do hear some slight similarities! That said, I am getting more Pat Benatar than Madonna this time around! That ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ is really a nice track! I fell in love with it only 2 or 3 years ago (I know, late as hell, but it’s ok)! It’s right up there with Madonna’s ‘Crazy For You’ and ‘Live To Tell’! I actually feel sorry for Gaga! In my mind her pretentious image/music poisoned the industry (from ’08 – ’11), but for some reason I’ve been much more tolerable of the new Gaga! Still, we have to thank God for that boring lady sitting in a chair, talking about some ‘Rolling in the Deep’ in 2010! She saved us and turned some things around (even Gaga for the better)! If p-p-p-poker face and mum mum mum mum mah was still happening in 2016…

    • S****** Blonde September 10, 2016

‘Live to Tell’ is one of the most powerful and haunting songs in Pop music, not crazy about ‘Papa Don’t Preach’, can’t deny is part of pop culture though.

      • Royalkev September 10, 2016

‘Live to Tell’ is magic! It’s a masterpiece! ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ is Pop bliss too! I like that it’s a very passionate Madonna on that song and I love the climax in the bridge “We are in loooove”! I heard it one day, not too long ago and it felt like the first time! It just clicked for me!

    • JOHNVIDAL September 10, 2016

Wow yes really really late for Papa don´t preach 🙂 This is just a theory I have: many of you suffer from bias syndrome. You are so much into one genre or into your fave artists that you completely ignore what you´re not into (and I´m talking in genreal, most people in this site). Maybe you hadn´t never really checked Madonna´s catalogue (or Lady Gaga´s talent) until recently after these many years just because you´re a Janet fan? Just saying it is a possibility. It´s like from 3 or 4 years ago most Rihanna and Katy Perry fans have decided they have to bring Lady Gaga down so that their faves can look better and dominate their precious singles charts, without giving any chance at Gaga´s new releases or caring about if it is good or not or if it is a talented artists (much superior to their faves) or not. To me it is sad. It is like if I would be looking down on Whitney Houston and refusing to enjoy her greatness just cause I´m a Mariah fan (or viceversa). People need to open their minds and respect what is respectable.

      • Royalkev September 10, 2016

^ That theory would be wrong. This is honestly why I don’t make too many assumptions. I said I fell in love with ‘Papa’ 2 or 3 years ago, not that I didn’t hear the song or check it out before! Lol. It’s why I stated I heard it one day and it clicked (“it felt like the first time”). People want to make Beyonce stans so one dimensional. They want to believe the Hive doesn’t appreciate other females so bad! I don’t know why folks want to put so many labels on this fan base, but I really don’t feel we’re that close minded! In fact, I believe all stans have members that are and aren’t that way; however, I do find some groups to be that way more than others. I’d never generalize though.

Anyway, back to the post at hand! I’m very familar with Gaga’s stuff. I hated ‘Fame’ (ans I did listen to it) and it’s follow-up! I’m not a fan, but I’ve stated many times before that one of my favorite tracks from her is ‘So Happy I Could Die’. I listen to it often! I also don’t stan for Rihanna, but my favorite tracks are ‘G4L’, ‘What’s My Name’ and ‘Rude Boy’! I don’t stan for Katy, but I love ‘Hummingbird Heartbeat’ and ‘One of the Boys’ (from her very first album)! It’s not just current pop stars, I like music from legends I don’t stan for as well:

*MJ – ‘Human Nature’, ‘PYT’, ‘Burn this Disco Out’

*Prince – ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’, ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend’ (he’s probably the only artist in this bunch that have a slew of albums I haven’t heard).

*Stevie Wonder – ‘If You Really Love Me’, ‘All I Do’

        …even your precious Celine!

*Celine Dion – ‘That’s the way it is’ (Ok, she might be another artists that whose work I wouldn’t know the majority of).

… and even artists going further back:

*Aretha Franklin – ‘One Step’, ‘Isn’t it a shame’ (with LaBelle)

*Patti LaBelle – ‘If Only You Knew’, ‘On My Own’

        *Fleetwood Mac – ‘Landslide’

        *Heart – ‘Alone’

*Joni Mitchell – ‘Help Me’, ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ (of course)

I can go on and on from Mary, Sade, Maxwell to Annie Lennox … You get my drift! Just because people mainly speak on their favs here (which goes for all of us), doesn’t mean we haven’t heard the output of others. Maybe we don’t like it as much as we do our favs and we focus or them …or (gasp), we just don’t like certain things others appreciate! It’s our prerogative babe!

      • JOHNVIDAL September 11, 2016

        Royal
That´s nice but I don´t know why you had to make it about Beyonce. At no point did I say maybe you were biased because you are a “one dimensional Beyonce fan”. At any point. If anything I used Janet to explain why I feel like in many of these people´s cases (ok, not you) they cannot stop being threatened by other artists and refuse to discover more talent if it isn´t from their faves. If it is not you then fine.

    • howwrongtheyare September 10, 2016

If we wish to be technical “Papa Don’t Preach?, sounds heavenly influenced by Pat Bentar’s ” Invincible” and Madonna look in the video comes off like Helen Slater from the “The Legend of Billie Jean”

  22. howwrongtheyare September 10, 2016

I didn’t get Madonna, I got more of Pat Benetar sound

    • Casual-T September 10, 2016

I get hints of Benatar, but I’m definitely getting Patty Smyth (The Warrior).

      • howwrongtheyare September 10, 2016

Well some of Pat Benetar biggest hits( Love is Battlefield,Invincible) were wrote by Holly Knight as well Patty Smyth’s “The Warrior”… So they must have been studying the her repertoire, because the influence is definitely there.

  23. brazio September 10, 2016

When I listened the other i said seems like I heard this before lol but I like the song!

  24. Kwinzy September 10, 2016

Ok so I re-listened. The part where Gaga sings “It was a perfect illusion” is similar to “But I’m keeping my baby.” Big whoopee.?Perhaps she was inspired? The thing with Stefani is that she doesn’t hide from paying homage to Madge. Unlike certain artists today who willfully steal from their predecessors and act like they created sh!t.

  25. SMH September 10, 2016

Sigh. Madonna fans need to sit their insecure assses all the way the fuq down. This song sounds nothing like Papa Don’t Preach. Not a single damn note. I knew Madonna fans live in an alternate universe, but this takes delusion to a brand new level.

    • JM September 10, 2016

Spoken like a true Little Monsturd. You are probably sending death threats on twitter right now before you call the Born Brave Whambulance to cry about what a victim you are.

      • SMH September 11, 2016

Lol not my fault Gaga has you so bothered that you’re hearing things. The songs don’t sound the same, the end.

  26. The Evil Eye September 10, 2016

She attempted to remove Madonna references from her music last time and immediately fell on her face. I guess when you build a career out of impersonating and swagger jacking someone else, it becomes a hard habit to break.

  27. Avi September 10, 2016

I haven’t heard the song, but I’m not at all surprised at this. Gaga is only “Gaga” when she’d rummaging through Madonnas closet.

  28. Nicko September 10, 2016

The delusion ???. Lil kim fans teas.

  29. XoMoDe September 10, 2016

All Gaga has ever been is a Star Trek version of Madonna anyway. When she tries
to not copycat Madge’s blueprint, she becomes awkward and confused. It’s like she needs that syllabus to not get lost.

  30. S****** Blonde September 10, 2016

Madonna fans, Beyoncé fans, Rihanna fans and everyone are hearing the same thing…..Like I said in another post, Gaga’s music is inspired by the greats, all of her music sounds like the music of some music legend, she has been doing this since the Fame Monster, she has plenty of songs that sounds just like one song of Madonna, examples, Dance in the Dark/Vogue (even the famous people rap), Born this Way/Express Yourself, Fashion!/Holiday, and much more, Gaga’s a very talented artist, no one is original but Gaga takes the unoriginal term to another level, I’m rooting for her this time, let’s not focus on the negative, let’s support her this time and see what happens.

    • JOHNVIDAL September 10, 2016

What´s your favorite Madonna song? The one where she was dressed like Marylin Monroe in the 80s? Because it is so rare to see Madonna being “inspired” by someone, right? 🙂

  31. JOHNVIDAL September 10, 2016

They need to let it go. It´s not 2012 when Madonna wanted all the attention she could to launch her new album and Superbowl performance. Time to pucking move on. The song is nothing like Madonna. End of story. If Gaga is always copying Madonna then so are all the other girls. Just nonesense. Learn to appreciate both ladies and move on.

  32. Elijahh the Pharaoh September 10, 2016

Lol it’s funny but the fans will catch stuff. Madonna looked hella good bck in the day. I mean the songs seem to be talking about the same thing. But I mean nothing new. It’s who can recreate n do it better. I really like the song by Lady Gaga. At the 2:29 she starts to take it up a notch and really f*** it up on the vocals. Good shyt

  34. Junior in Jamaica September 10, 2016

That is exactly the same thing I said!

  35. Romeko September 11, 2016

There is no f****** similarity here, Madonna and her coward fans are acting so childish everyday. Allow this woman to enjoy her era please. EVERY NEW MUSIC IS BOUND TO SOUND SIMILAR WITH WHAT HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE PAST. I AM A MUSICIAN AND SOMETIMES, I COMPOSE SONG BUT WILL BE SHOCKED TO SEE IT SOUND SIMILAR WITH SOMEONE ELSE TRACK. MELODY MUST REMIND U OF THE PAST SAME AS LYRICS. ENOUGH OF THIS S*** CAUSE ITS BEGINNING TO LOOK SO IRRITATING.

  36. StarXavi September 12, 2016

I honestly do not hear any similarity. Maybe with a sequence of notes but overall the two songs so different! Born This Way definitely sounded like Express Yourself but this one is a DEEEEP stretch.

  37. Sunshine September 21, 2016

and for yall who are complaining about perfect illusion song from Lady Gaga pls all of u stfu madonna had her time she’s old now and aint making nothing new and if she was making anything new she needs to get with today style i have nothing against her i used to love her WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD.. but she is a good singer and performer but now its Gaga’s time and i love her she is today (for me) one of the best and she blends in very well with today’s style of music
SO STOP HATING GUYS CAUSE YOU CAN TRASH TALK AND TALK AND TALK BUT SHE IS STILL ON TOP^^
