Watch: The Weeknd Performs ‘Starboy’ On ‘Ellen’

Published: Monday 28th Nov 2016 by Sam

The Weeknd is riding high into the week with new album ‘Starboy.’

Released last Friday, the set has been shining brightly atop of the iTunes tally in over 80 countries ever since. Its currently tipped to do big numbers first week.

Still, in understanding the importance of promo, the Canadian star stopped by the Ellen show to perform the LP’s title track.

Watch him in action after the jump…

Not “bad,” but we’re still struggling to understand what the hype is about.

His voice is distinctive. That much is a given. But it doesn’t pack the kind of punch needed to excuse his basic approach to performances.

He just stands there while his voice just jogs on at the same pace.

Your thoughts?

The Weeknd is one of the best male R&B writers/performers of this generation. He’s extremely talented and deserves all the “hype” he gets. Starboy is going to win big at the 2018 Grammys.

I’ll give you he is one of best R&B writers and has a creative mind to create the visuals, but performer he is not.

TGJ what y’all talking about? Adele, Mariah and so many others do the same thing.

Innovative but he CANNOt SING and live performances are a FAIL! He is only a Meh for me

I don’t get the hype either but I’m glad to see an actual R&B artist topping the charts. After watching last nights STA’s, I’ve got my eyes on Ro James. I miss true singers and performers!

He created an entire genre and wave of a new rnb sound and rnb artists with Trilogy. He and Frank are the fathers of all these new dark, trap, s** driven rnb singers that are popping up. Of course he deserves respect! And the visuals for this era is insane!! The music too.

Good musically. He cannot sing though, or perform. It´s some type of Lana del Rey case. Which is good. They have talent on their own (creating music and visual artists). Prince or Michael he is not (I´m saying it for the words Ellen used to introduce him).

Agree with what youre saying about Ellen comparing him to those 2. But I think he is really good live? He sounds exactly like his recorded tracks, he has improved a lot! Way better than back in the days where it was kinda akward to watch.

What are some of your favorite songs and/or albums JOHNVIDAL? I’m currently making my Holiday playlist, and I usually include many of my favorites mixed in with Christmas favorites…curious if you have some songs I haven’t heard that you enjoy, like cool b-sides/deep album cuts!

I’m in Italy right now and that song is played everywhere I go here.

He’s an artist. Not a vocalist.

  7. Grande the Way November 28, 2016

The hype is that he makes good music. Not every R&B guy needs to be Chris Brown. He isn’t Miguel vocally but I can appreciate and enjoy his performances as I do his music. Music elite fans get so caught up on what they perceive as talented that they forget to simply enjoy the music.

You’re acting like being chris brown is something good?

That boy uses so much auto-tune, at least Abel sings in his real voice and actually sings live.

Maybe if chris didn’t smoke so much his voice would be better.
