Congratulations are in order for Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams.
For, the songbird has announced her engagement to boyfriend Chad Johnson.
The pair, who have been dating for a year, made the announcement in PEOPLE Magazine today.
Their initial meeting took place at a spiritual retreat in March 2017. Thereafter Williams, 37, and Johnson, 40, stayed in contact, building a strong relationship through conversations online, over text message and via FaceTime.
They went public with their public union last July and became engaged on March 21st 2018. Johnson presented his bride to be with a gorgeous 5-carat engagement ring ahead of their wedding, which is currently set for this summer.
He’s a pastor and a pro-sports chaplain who leads daily devotionals for many leading sports stars.
Johnson also runs Elevate International, a nonprofit that serves urban youth and families with spiritual retreats. As fate would have it, it was the 2017 retreat for adults that brought the couple’s paths together.
“I was in a horrible, dark place. I just needed to go somewhere where I could get a message of hope and restoration, rejuvenation — get connected to God.”
Johnson, whose parents divorced at 13 and raised his now teenage nephews, said of how he knew it was time to take their relationship to the next level:
“I was getting ready to turn 40, she’s in her late 30s. Neither of us have been married, had children, and I think you just get to a place sometimes where you’re just so career-driven, so focused on what you’re doing at the moment, that it’s kind of a comfort zone. … Both of us were in very similar places on a personal level.”
Williams shared that, while her bandmates have met and love Johnson, she was caution introducing him to her people initially. She explained why saying:
“I didn’t even tell any people I was talking to Chad. I wanted to treat this relationship differently because obviously all my past relationships have failed. I didn’t want to talk about another relationship that possibly wasn’t gonna go anywhere.”
On being proud of their interracial relationship, Johnson said:
“I’m white, she’s black. What a special time for our relationship to be on display in that respect with the tension in the world and in our country.”
As for what Williams’ message about her story is, she beamed:
“Don’t lose hope in love. I do think you should not focus so much that if you’re not in love that you get depressed about it. … Just don’t lose hope. But definitely be doing what you can do to make yourself a better person for the person that possibly is on the way for you.”
Huge congratulations to Michelle and Chad!
