Lauren Jauregui Dishes On Solo Album: There’ll Be No Features

Published: Wednesday 24th Oct 2018 by Sam

Lauren Jauregui sent fans into a frenzy today with the release of her debut solo single ‘Expectations.’

And while the soulful offering currently sits at #6 on US iTunes, the 22-year-old Fifth Harmony star isn’t resting on her laurels. Instead, she’s pounding the promotional pavement – with her latest stop being MTV‘s TRL.

While chopping it up with host Sway Calloway, Jauregui opened up about her upcoming album, which will be arriving via Columbia Records.

Interestingly, she revealed that the as yet untitled set will not house any features – although she asserts that guest stints on other artist songs are in her future.

I love be bold choice to not have features. For a new artist we really should be hearing their VOICE. I hate when new artist flood their debut with features trying to ride others wave instead creating their own. So kudos to her.

Ri-Whine-A sure has a lot of featured artists on a few of her projects…??‍♂️

Which project? Rihanna NEVER has more than a couple features on her albums. She doesn’t need them.

You just love to keep Rihanna in your dusty a$$ mouth.

A big majority of the greats/legendary artists didn’t have features on their debut. Not saying she is one (by any means) but It says a lot about the confidence she has in her talent, especially when today’s climate clings so heavily to features, leaving less standouts

I remember the good old times when a feature actually was something. People were hyped bout features. Nowadays they‘re just throwing them around. Especially most pop girls are just randomly putting a rapper, Chris brown or nicki on their songs and most of the times they are doing nothing for the track. Except for nicki, her verses are often pretty good

Pretty girl, okay first single (give a B- at best), average video. I don’t think she’s popping enough to not have one feature on this record. I get not having Ty Dolla Sign (it’d be too predictable) but give me a Bryson Tiller duet, give me a Post Malone verse give me something that’ll make it worth buying! Even the single cover is just blah – like her name nor the song title is on it – she can’t afford to be this mysterious first go out – like girl those 5H fans are not going to carry this song to #1 like they did Camilla – “Havana” was a bop! But hey she may surprise me – only time will tell…

What you are describing is the bad artist we have today. We have Nor that has features and high end producers behind her and where are the two new songs charting right now boo? She doesn’t need a feature because she actually has a strong voice. What you want is basic and expected. Don’t be bringing in your boob grade into this. It’s her first solo debute and you are grading her as if she is on her 5th album. All the girls are on different levels and camilia released multiple songs at a time. We all know Havana was not her first either so get out of here.

@Klorie I definitely agree. Like he’s recommending her to be basic and generic. I respect her more for trying to establish herself as an artist on her own footing.

Did I miss something? Because she is basic and generic. The video proved that. There wasn’t one damn thing about that video that was memorable. No one will be talking about it six weeks from now if they are at all today. And who said anything about Normani? I feel the exact same about her. Beautiful girl but she’s to wow. Mark my words this song will for sure hit the top 10 (#8, #9 max) which is admirable but not enough to carry an album to long term success and as we know the industry isn’t all that forgiven with sophomore albums so the first one has to pop and this just ain’t it. We don’t live in an era where new artists can come out with a ballad of all things and catch and keep the publics attention enough to reach into their pockets to buy their music.

And as for features – like, let’s not act like Bey didn’t need Jay to help push Crazy in Love – no one can deny that he was crucial to that composition of that song and it succeeding. Over time they’re have been exceptions – Whitney, Mariah, Gaga, Brandy, Ashanti – artists who’s first solo single didn’t require help but Lauren is just not that artist.

Great idea but the music will prove if its poor execution. “Love & War” was a great album that had no features and musically it was a damn good album. “Whitney Houston” and “Whitney” went on to be mega selling classics. “Toni Braxton” and “Secrets” are good examples as well, even though “How Many Ways” was later served with a remix and a feature, still. I love the live version of her song as I said when she performed it and was waiting for its official debut, but as someone said the actual sing is just okay. I don’t think with the song is that good to lead a album or is a good representation of the album itself but it’s only day 2 right? Well see.
